Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Broncos have developed players with elite attributes, both physical & skill, and have taken those attributes (speed, strength, power, cardio, ball skills) to new levels. Walsh, Cobbo, Staggs, Fansworth, Mam, Haas, Riki, Flegler & Carrigan provide an amazing combination of attributes. With shrewd recruitment in Reynolds & Capewell, they have rocketed up the ladder the past 4 seasons.

We are not going to replicate that by purely recruitment. We need to develop the likes of Laulilii brothers, Faagutu, Galvin, Mason, Large brothers, Makasini, Willett and take the likes of Stef, Pole, Matamua, Fainu brothers, Blore, T'oa & Bula to whole new levels to get us anywhere near the top 4.

Morris is a good man to have on board to help Benji & Api with this.
Don't forget, this is the Broncos team that finished last in 2021 (before handing us the baton!) and missed the eight last year. If you had said in 2021 or 2022, that a spine of Billy Walters, Adam Reynolds, Ezra Man and Reece Walsh would go within a whisker of the premiership in 2023, surrounded by the same cattle that finished last in 2021 you would be laughed off the forum.
Brisbane were also a front office / leadership basketcase not so long ago; Walters under enormous pressure, apparently couldn't coach, bickering with Ikin, Old Boys marching on the joint with pitchforks. Things can turn around quickly if everyone gets focused on the footy. The spine has as much promise as Brisbane's did in 2021 and 2022. Api is top shelf. Bula could be one of the great success stories if he develops at the same rate. The new young halves are untested at NRL level but do have a bit of X factor about them and Sezar should at least provide a steady hand and experienced presence so that Api doesn't shoulder that all by himself. Throw in a pack that doesn't look too shabby in comparison to most other clubs...
We are defintely a few outside backs short of being a real threat, but my point being, if everyone at the club from top to tail gets focused on supporting on-field success, it could happen faster than we expect.

I reckon if we can sign Xavier Savage who is no longer a high priority at the Raiders, despite being paid a starting players salary.
Add a hard running tackle busting edge forward in Josh Curran.
Re-sign the valuable Charlie Staines and Alex Seyfarth.
To fit them in offload the ageing David Nofoaluma, offload the disappointing Asu Kepaoa and one or two others.
We would have a team capable of scoring over 20 pints per game without even trying.
no club will take Nofo's contract though, he won't go anywhere unfortunately

Sounds like a young Bennett
Don't know if you listened to the Footy Talk interview Aaron Woods did with Luke Brookes. They both said Benj was like that as a player as well. Could read the mood of the team at training and dial up or down accordingly. Apparently he still runs rings around them in opposed sessions as a coach. At least you know he is going to bleed for the joint. If it doesn't work out for him it won't be through lack of care factor or simple job preservation.
It's actually a really good interview and paints Woods and Brookes in a whole different (positive) light. They talk about the whole Big 4 sh*t show. You get the distinct impression none of them really wanted to leave, but they had a lot of people (self interested) in their ear and the club absolutely stuffed it up big-time.

If he’s told he will likely spend the next 2 seasons playing NSW Cup if he stays with us, it would then be in his best interests to look at heading to the UK Super League where he’d be one of the best wingers in the competition and would likely earn the wage we are currently paying him for the next 4 seasons.

And we talk about how badly the club is supposedly run now.
Nothing compares to the complete stuff up in losing Teddy, Moses and Woods.

Do you have a link would love to listen to it

Bit harsh. He had a great 2023 season. Bloke fully deserves to be extended when does he miss a tackle? His carries have been better too.
He's a top 30 for sure, and easily a top 17 at the Tiges. He's the type of forward you need in your squad - reliable, good defence, solid carries, low mistake rate, good club man. You can't have a pack full of them, but you do need at least one. He has hit the jackpot though if he is on $550K per season. I reckon that is about $100K overs, maybe $150K.

That’s why everyone is onto these guys so hard.
We lived through that stuff up, some of these guys were there, and we don’t want a repeat.
They have also botched many things since then so our ears are pricked.

Im loving those offloads … they need to move on at least 4 Im hoping …I thought they would have moved on some by now …there are a couple ( Kepaoa is one) who I thought they could just cut and eat their salary … so I wonder why they haven’t done so by now

Nofo unfortunately wont be moved on … but I hope he introduces himself to the NSW Cup coach over the summer…as he will getting to spend a bit of time with him next year ..
We still don't have 2 better wingers then Nofo. Actually I don't think we currently have 1 better winger than Nofo.

Not sure if I buy the whole "all four of them really wanted to stay stuff".

End of the day if they were that desperate to stay they would have. Teddy literally had signed with Raiders until he backflipped. His head had absolutely been turned. Moses played his junior football with the Eels and didn't take much convincing. Woods took huge money at the Dogs. No one else was offering Brooks the money he signed for.

Our admin our hopeless so i would believe they made a meal of it, but I think there is some rewriting of history there.

Anyone that had seen Walsh and Mam come through wouldn't have been shocked at the Broncos being successful with that spine. Additionally, everyone even back in 2021 was speaking highly of the likes of Haas, Carrigan, Flegler.

You might be right about Teddy. I got the sense that Moses and definitely Woods would have stayed if the situation had been handled better by the club. No doubt the player agent involved played them off a break as well.

It's quite probable we're just playing hardball with any potential suitors for Twal. They didn't want to pay full freight, we won't pay for him to play elsewhere, either they up their bids or he plays out his contract.

The fact he's on 525k next year is a serious indictment on the club's management and recruitment failures.

And frankly significantly overpaying Bula is disappointing too. He definitely warranted an upgrade but next year he'll be earning more than the like of Walsh and Edwards ever have. How will he go in his second year? Can he maintain performance and fitness year in and out? The fact he could potentially earn 900k in the last year of his contract is ludicrous. We got absolutely taken to the cleaners by his agent.

I think 500k for next year would have been more than sufficient. With pay rises each year culminating in 700k for his 4th season. That would be market value, sadly once again we're paying the Tigers tax, way overs....
So what do you want to pay Bula?
Let’s low ball him so he goes to the Roosters. Awesome idea

I have a low opinion of Nofo..

If they sign no one else then go with Naden and Junior ..

Otherwise re-sign Staines..

And if none of that works,,,go and elevate a younger player

Better than persevering with a slow crab running across the field who leaks 3 tries a game

Maybe Benji's plan is to get rid of the guys who tackle to much

But to be honest he is worth every cent a tackling machine who can play 70 minutes of high quality football
