You think - Or you guessing?
I can tell you,
There are others (top 4) club that I know (as fact), That don't even let the media guys publish
Training photos of some of their kids....
Going out of their way to keep them under wraps as long as possible...
I'm of the opinion with the Hudl they run, Everyone knows who every kid that's anything is anyway....
That's my opinion... I don't know.
I do know that hanging onto these kids isn't going to be helped by bigging them up at every opportunity...
How many people (Including here) knew the names Jahream Bula and Tallyn DaSilva this time last year
- before Sheens spent the off-season wrapping them deluxe...
Now the whole game is banging on about them?
Everyone bangs on here about our players getting poached by the bigger clubs,
the thinking that having them on show doesn't help, that is a bit naive for mine...
These kids are years off grade, and behind current players at the club....
and They're kids!!
What positives have ever come from over-hyping young kids?
It's Lunacy....
I don't see wraps or write ups about any other kids like I do ours... Bias aside.
Look at all the media talk recently about Galvin wanting out
- It might exist, But I don't see that sort of stuff about other 17/18 yr olds...
Oh?
Like the Courier Mail's yearly article of the 50 top juniors at 15's, 17's and 19's level, their history, the clubs they're contracted to, etc?
Or like the weeks-long fallout between Oloapu and the Broncos and subsequent signing with the Dogs which was played out entirely across all the major media outlets?
I understand the risk of over-hyping kids. We have been burned in recent memory with the mother of all examples in Brooks and his cautionary tale of junior hyping-up.
But for mine, simply posting training photos of juniors, up and comers or possibles, discussing their pathways, providing detail on the junior systems and squads is only a good thing. It provides the supporter base with information about generation-next, allow us to gain an insight into the progress or development of the pathways as a system, provides context to NRL recruitment foci (specifically as it pertains to the strength of upcoming cohorts of Flegg or Cup players), shows club-wide transparency, provides these young men with a sample of exposure, which can help them adjust at a responsible pace before being thrust suddenly into the forefront of the casual fans' minds when they hit first grade.
Besides, if a club has their contractual house and succession plan in order, these contracts for the key retention targets are sorted well ahead of time (I understand this historically has not been our strong suit, something I am seeing evidence of being much improved). If any competing club is using preseason photos on their rivals' websites in order to target juniors, they've missed the boat.
The poaching happens well before that.
