I hope Australia Day never changes from the 26th January. Let people do what they want to do on this day. If you want to protest do it. Good luck to you. I'll be celebrating.

There should be more people like you. Both sides are as bad as each other. Instead of worrying about themselves, they just whine about everyone else.

I think the culture war is deciding on and insisting Australia Day is celebrated 26 Jan. Can't those who want to honour that date have First Fleet Day or something actually related?

I think the date should be the one the most possible number of people would support. I love the idea of the last Friday in January. A day not tied to any event, just a common day, a free day, to reflect on what we value about our counrty and how we would like it to evolve.
Why does the date have to be tied to an event? Why can't it just be a totally free day dedicated to our country?

Could just as easily ask that question in reverse. Anyway, surely First Fleet Day would be just as offensive to those likely to be offended by Australia Day. Do you think indigenous people are likely to celebrate Australia on a different date? My guess is not so much.

I mean for those who want too celebrate First Fleet day, or give it another name. It's a free and democratic country, people can celebrate the historical event. Just maybe don't expect everyone to celebrate it as the national day.
The first action was making that day Australia Day, that's why in my opinion that starts the culture war on the issue. Opposition came after that decision.

I think you make a good point, some people will never want to celebrate Australia on any day. That's why I said a day as many people as possible would be ok with, maybe one not attached to a historical event. I like last Friday in January.
ANZAC Day is a commemoration ... not a celebration.

You can’t, though, disagree with a stated fact after acknowledging it weakens your own standpoint. The national uproar really has very little to do with the date of this unfortunate event…

What "fact" did I disagree with? Did the British not establish the settlement and the penal colony on Jan 26? Is that not the day that life changed irrevocably for indigenous Australians?

I’ve just been reading about Indigenous Peoples Day which is celebrated in the USA in October each year. It originally started as an alternative position to Christopher
Columbus Day( which is also celebrated in October) which celebrates the first arrival of non indigenous people to America ( NB he was actually Italian not Spanish).
In addition the Yanks have Thanksgiving Day which is a major celebration of the arrival of the British and what they brought with them to the new land.
And of course, the big one is 4thJuly, American Independence Day when they ditched the British and went alone ( still to happen here).
My point with all this, let the Indigenous People have their own day, let all others have Australia Day, and get ready to vote yes to a Republic next time we’re asked!
