Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

There’s a difference between cover and quality cover. If we’re being truthful with ourselves 3 of those 4 names aren’t quality NRL wingers.

. Lobb is a junior who hasn’t played a game of NRL.

. Alaimalo is a rugby union player who hasn’t played a game of NRL.

. Naden has talent but if we’re being realistic what he has shown lately is he’s a journeyman and couldn’t crack into a wooden spoon side. Haven’t given up on him however. I also consider him more a centre.

Staines I’ll give you.

Nofa leaving and the pending departure of Tupou we definitely need at least one more winger. Was told Fox is still quietly being shopped around. I wouldn’t be against it tbh. Taylan May another option.
If we could get the Fox back, that would be great.

I don't like what transpired earlier, but we can blame that on prior management.

Reuniting both Olam and Fox would be massive for us. They’d give us the combination of speed and strength covered on one whole side. They both won competitions together and are representative players. Then you have the winning combination of Api/Luai as well to pair with them.

I think we’d be silly not to explore it.

No one looked good at the dogs last year I don’t think fox is finished he still has lots of value.

Wouldn't be against picking up the fox, but he's on a bit at the dogs. Swapping one terrible contract for another isnt what we should be about now.
If he comes subsidized thats another question of how much and for how long.

If my memory is right, he’s on 550K which is slightly higher than what we paid Nofa. I do think we’ll make inquiries given we probably have to go to market for another winger, but I agree Dogs gotta chip in.

this time last year …Bula had never played a game of NRL

I'm not opposed to it, I'd love to see him come home, but Fox is a notoriously bad trainer. not Nofo bad, but not great all the same.

great for culture and loves the club and is one of the game's great personalities, but are we putting ourselves in a corner again with a high paid winger who has issues on the training paddock?

the perfect scenario is taking him on a cut priced deal for the remainder of his contract with an option for 2026. I think the Dogs and Fox would be receptive to that, and it doesn't hurt us financially.

again, I'd love to see him come home and he still has more to give, but I do have some slight doubts.

I'm coming around to this idea. Fox also brings experience, a big voice in defence on-the-field & swagger. Swagger is something we have lacked for a while and with Luai, he brings that which can lift those around them.

Proviso I'd just take the Bulldogs contract for the next 2 seasons so it doesn't give him much incentive to leave unless he does want out.

Some.

The fact that someone is, or is not, in a Top 8 side carries a lot less weight than many think it does in my opinion. There are countless examples of duds not only playing in Top 8 teams, but winning competitions. The reverse is also true, with many examples of champion players stuck in woeful teams (basically, anybody involved with us for the past 12 years).

Now, back to the efficacy of signing Terrell when based on what he's currently shown -

His output is pretty good for a bench prop, without being outstanding. His tackle efficiency is quite good, his metreage and tackle-breaks are ok and he seems to run with purpose, which I like. He's a decent bench prop as it stands right now. But there are probably 15-20 'decent' bench props in the comp at the moment.

The main point I was making, was that he offers no upgrade on the likes of Pole, who I think is a far better prospect, is younger and has a higher ceiling. We then have the likes of Twal and Seyfarth on the books, who, whilst not as impactful, I would argue are more reliable middles and undeniably more well-rounded when it comes to effort on effort moments. We then have the likes of Kit, Faagutu and Jordy Miller who are 12-24 months away from being around the 17, if not mainstays, so it would be sideways signing at best and a pathway blocker at worst.
Fair enough, but you have to remember even if you are making a sideways move on a prop, which if he replaced Seyfarth it’s an upgrade, you’re getting a significant upgrade in the outside backs. So at worst we end up with a better back line and an equally good pack.

I probably wouldn’t bother just signing Terrell if it didn’t include Taylan though.

Totally. He’s killing it in England (currently man of steel) and left NRL (35 tries in 40 odd games) after a couple of short seasons. Think he’s got the attacking gifts (xfactor) that our outside backs lack.

Has scored more FG tries than Noffa for all those calling him a legend.
70% of his tries are in super league.

I don’t think you can last in Melbourne's system that long & be a bad trainer

I wouldn’t say our 2-5 in 2005 was anything special, but we won a comp based on quality players around them and they just had to do their job,

One edge agree - Elford & Fitzy no frills players. Fitzy started his NRL gig in 02 & Elford had 70 games under his belt + part of the panthers winning squad (not GF winning team).

Other edge disagree - Richards was a strike weapon & Fatts was a premiership international center.

2005 has been proven to be a total fluke year given what happened after it & hope we don’t aim to repeat that 20yr run again.

It’s also the edge we need a winger also with Tupou going. Staines has the other spot wrapped up with Lobb probably backup (Lobb played right side for Dragons reggies alot).
