Cricket Season Thread

Smith lasted 3 balls 2nd innings in 1st over .He steps back and across and plays at balls well outside with neither a horizontal or vertical bat like 45 degrees and chops on . He has problems as on opener . Marnus then falls for the leg side strangle.Gutsy Lyon comes in and sees us though to stumps albeit dropped on last ball of the day
2-13 which gives us lead of 217 .Prior we bowled well enough NZ all out 179 in 46 overs
So equivalent 2-217 we need to put on another 200 minimum tomorrow make them chase well over 400 .
 
What the hell has happened to Smith and Labuschagne?
They used to push each other to be the best batsmen in the world…quite frankly, neither deserves a cap in any of our international teams currently.
 
I Think that we might win tomorrow .NZ need 258 runs we need 7 wickets however I don't think we deserve to win . Reason Lyon was our top scorer in the 2nd innings that's a disgrace .Smith ,Labuchagne ,Marsh and Carey contributed sweet FA .Khawaja .Head got starts but threw it away ,Only Green can hold his head up .
Biggest danger Rachin Ravindra .Also thought our ground fielding today a bit "pedestrian "

Im very confident we’ll win tomorrow, before tea. Lyon with a little help will clean em up.
Yeah we probably haven’t put together a complete performance in 12 months, but as I have said before in this team someone stands up, and not just the test team, all of them. We’ve been in trouble a few times over the last 12 months but have generally found a way. So to say if we win we don’t deserve the win is a bit rough I reckon. Green who has been under pressure was the one in the first innings and the knight watchman was the one in the second, on a pitch that has been hard to bat on. And yes I used knight intentionally.
Although, before this series I was a little concerned with the form of the batsmen. Except for Uzi and Marsh, the rest needed runs. Marnus needs to start scoring or he’ll be on the block soon. I think they have Renshaw as next in line, personally I’d have Bancroft and when the time comes Bancroft to open and Smith to 3.

Recent away wins 1 test in Pakistan ( won series 1-0 ) rest draws
1 test in India ( lost series 2-1) 1 draw
Best India at the Oval to win WTC
Won 2 tests in Ashes in UK ( series 2-2 ) 1 draw
Won test in NZ up 1-0 with 2nd test starting Friday in Christchurch
Of course at home we've pummelled Sth Africa and England and Pakistan and nearly swept Windies until that caped wonder from Guyana came into the attack with a bung toe

Lyon was getting so much bounce yesterday and I figured he’d get a little more turn today, but what about him changing ends and getting more turn and bounce, I love that kind of tactical change and then it comes off. I remember Tubby changing the bowlers ends in Pomland, the commentators saying what’s he doing then the wickets started to fall, that was a good night.
As I said, what I like about this team is it doesn’t matter what kind of trouble we get into we are always a chance, bcoz we have someone in the team who will be that thorn like Green, and Lyon did in this game. Everyone has their job but nobody is above helping someone else do theirs.
I see Greeny mentioned having experience at the other end and Garry’s bowling, even the young bloke knows he didn’t do it alone.
One disappointment was Ravindra’s play today, he should’ve batted deeper into the day, not to mention Capt Southee’s stupid approach to batting deep, looked like he was practicing his drive for golf this arvo.
Anyway I reckon we deserved this win, especially after we were sent in on a pitch that was so green when our batsmen walked out there they required an escort to be shown where it was. That first innings with the bat set up the win, it was the highest of the four innings by a good margin and although not everyone went well, generally we looked to bat deep on a green top while playing our natural game.
I’m liking these pitches that have been a little bowler friendly, gets a result, a ton means something, and it’s not just 5 days of T20. Love test cricket.

Disappointed with his effort today, but yes he’s got game. Can bat, bowl, and field. He should spend some offseasons overseas to help develop his game. Maybe he should play some shield for a year or two instead of NZ domestic.
 
I wanted to give a shout out to Nathan Lyon.

In all the years I have been watching test cricket, Australia has only produced two match-winning spin bowlers – Warne (naturally) and Lyon.

It just shows you what a tough gig bowling spin in Australia is. Especially, off-spin, or, if you prefer, finger spin. Plenty of great overseas finger spinners have come to Australia and failed.

To reinforce this point, I reckon that since the first world war, Lyon is the only truly great finger spinner we have produced. One in a hundred years!

When he was given the nick-name The GOAT it was treated as a bit of a laugh. But no one is laughing now. He is certainly The GOAT of Australian finger spinners.

So, I’m just sitting back and enjoying watching him go about his work.

It has taken a hundred years for us to throw up a finger spinner of his quality. It may take another hundred years to see his like again.
 
Puckoffski put his head in the way of another bouncer. He really needs to learn to play the short ball a little better. His head started to turn away before the ball had even bounced and it got him good. Or bad? Young blokes that have grown up with no fear due to playing in helmets end up having poor short ball judgement, they don’t seem to know how to avoid getting hit.

Agree. I read Chapelli once comment on the way modern batsmen play the short pitched ball.

In his day (pre-helmets) they tended to play back and across to get inside the line of the ball. If they missed they were less likely to be hit.

Modern players tend to stay in line with the ball and even play it on the front foot. There is not much margin for error and if you miss, you are more likely to be hit.

The irony is that helmets were introduced to protect the players head, but their introduction has meant players are willing to take more risks and, as a consequence, you see many more players hit in the head these days than in the pre-helmet days.
 
12 concussions is terrible for the young bloke.
Someone really should step in and make the decision that he himself won’t.
He needs a new line of work.

It wasn't even a bouncer - Would've hit him in the ribs at worst had he not ducked into it.

Your right, always taught, keep your eye on the ball, get inside he line and then decide to hook or duck. Amazingly pre helmets there were not too many bad head knocks. Remember Peter Toohey getting cleaned up by the Windies and Rick McCosker in the Centenary test

“play back and across to get inside the line of the ball.”
That is what I was taught, I can add; stay tall, keep your eye on the ball. From that foundation you can make your decisions from there, duck, weave, get under or over the ball with the bat if you’ve decided to play a shot. If you’re gunna get hit you would try and take it on the body ensuring that your head, bat and gloves were well out of the way. It’s better to come off with bruises and some runs than a crack to the head and everyone telling you how you should have played it.
The front foot pull and hooks use to be rare and not until you were well and truly in and seeing the ball clearly , and probably the first change bowlers that were a little slower.
But certainly not played with the disregard to self preservation they do today.
But as @Pascoes_barber said Puckoffski’s ball didn’t even get up above belly height. He had turned his head before the ball had even bounced, I replayed it a few times, (Mrs BF asked what the hell was that kid doing using his helmet instead of his bat?). I would like to see all of his head knocks, I reckon there has to be a technique issue and now he’s probably a little gun shy. I was watching that game yesterday, he looked in poor shape afterwards. You would think he’d of worked on it but he probably wore a helmet and practiced the same way as usual. I would be practicing with no helmet and maybe with indoor cricket balls and learn the old way. He needs to do something about it or as Mrs BF said yesterday “he needs a new job for his health”.
