Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I’m a bit skeptical of the posts suggesting that ex-players such as Talau are playing better in other sides specifically due to better coaching. These guys have been playing top level footy for half their lives and know how to play. It’s now about individual desire, effort and fitness. Performance dictated by a higher standard due to the type of players around you. Talau now has guys around him able to put him into space and time passes that he simply needs to catch. Forwards that dominate and halves that control the play. I think his performance is more related to this than something magical that Siebold has coached into him in a few months.
I argue that Talau for example hasn’t changed much at all as a player.

Lord knows but according to some on here there is a boom coming soon. Dunno, but if it's true I hope it's a good improvement on a very dull, uninspiring backline fullback included.
Many things are pointing to some sort of recruitment news this month ...

1, I don't think Richo would release one of our higher profile players like Papali'i from the final year of his contract without having something up his sleeve.

2. I don't think Richo would have been so forthcoming with releasing Papali'i if there is a risk of losing Stef as well (both IP & Stef have same manager).

3. Jake Simpkin to Manly rumours (which would give us 2 roster spots to fill by 30-June) & Richo's visit in-person to the UK.

So we take those 3 points with a grain of salt and prepare for a signing like Cade Cust + promotion of a dev player on a low contract lol

OR

We are pleasantly surprised!

Obviously the true value of Sullivan at this point of time is around 300k, maybe 350-400k at very best, so some genius from within our organisation has offered him ridiculous overs and because of that he becomes a liability due to salary cap reasons.
However even when Luai arrives we will be in desperate need of a quality genuine number 7 to either partner Luai in the halves or be a quality backup.
So my question is if we do offload Sullivan, who are we bringing in to replace him ?
I would hope it’s Toby Sexton as he is a genuine controlling number 7 with a good kicking game, something we do not currently have.
Isn't that what Luai is supposed to do ?

He is, but we would still need a capable back up halfback, both Galvin and Latu Fainu have always been 5/8’s and never been the type of players to take on all the first receiver responsibility which a halfback is responsible for.
I understand we signed Sullivan to be a more genuine halfback, but it could be seen as he is now also considered more of a 5/8 style second receiver and it’s no point having 3 or 4 of them.

The expectations on our young players is regularly off, especially when transitioning them into FG from a bottom 4 position. They make a few errors get thrown into positions to fill gaps, and people right them off before their time.
Tommy always played with passion but had some errors in his game - like most young players - and because of our win loss ratio the errors overrode any of the good things he did.
Not surprised at all that he is going well it was always there and he certainly had no trouble in getting another stronger club to pick him up.
Like Madden and I expect Simpkin will do much the same.
And there are some other young guys make it straight away …they are all different …

Tommy was not really transitioning into FG…he made his debut in 2019 and was here another 5 years and played 47 NRL games at the Tigers …he was given every opportunity to show what he had … like I said though …the coaching is no doubt partly to blame ..

Wests Tigers offer $4 million deal to young gun

The Wests Tigers have moved to keep Stefano Utoikamanu away from circling clubs, offering the prop forward a five-year, $4 million contract extension until the end of 2029.

The club hopes the long-term extension deal will prevent one of the NRL’s most in-demand players from hitting the open market.

Utoikamanu has a clause in his contract that means he will become a free agent unless he plays two games in this year’s State of Origin series. It can be negated if the Tigers finish in the top eight. The option for next year is worth between $600,000-$700,000.

With the Tigers near the bottom of the ladder after eight straight losses, and due to miss another finals series, Utoikamanu’s future will largely hinge on whether Blues coach Michael Maguire picks him in the NSW team for game two in three weeks.

The $4 million Tigers offer came days after he missed out on Maguire’s team for game one in Sydney on Wednesday.

This masthead has previously reported that there is an undertaking between Tigers chief Shane Richardson and Utoikamanu’s agent Daniel O’Loughlin to avoid waiting until the club is no longer a mathematical chance of playing finals football before deciding his future.

It’s not in the Tigers’ interests for Utoikamanu to decide late in the season that he wants to leave, which would restrict their replacement options and place uncertainty around their salary cap management.
Sources with knowledge of the situation, talking under the condition of anonymity in order to speak freely, said Utoikamanu’s agent was preparing to ask for permission to negotiate with rival clubs if the 24-year-old misses out on selection in Origin II.

The Tigers want to seal a deal before then, and have presented an offer to keep Utoikamanu at the club for the same length of time as incoming marquee man Jarome Luai.

Several rival clubs, who are monitoring the situation closely, are aware of the Tigers’ attempts to retain Utoikamanu.

Their offer, which averages out about $800,000 per year, is less than the $900,000 figure previous chief executive Justin Pascoe indicated the club would be willing to spend to retain the young front-rower.
His successor Richardson is trying to overhaul the Tigers roster and wants Utoikamanu to join Luai as the centrepieces of the club’s rebuild under Benji Marshall.

The Tigers have already allowed Isaiah Papali’i to be released from the final year of his deal to take up an offer at Penrith from next season. Richardson has also been busy trying to offload players like Jayden Sullivan and Brent Naden in England over the past fortnight.

The Tigers are also close to parting ways with hooker Jake Simpkin. The 22-year-old is on a deal worth about $400,000 this year but the Tigers are in discussions with the Manly Sea Eagles about an immediate exit.
The sticking point remains how many years Manly are willing to offer beyond the end of this season.
His manager, Isaac Moses, is in discussion with Manly about a move as early as this week. He could be included in the Sea Eagles team to play against the Panthers at BlueBet Stadium on Sunday.

Simpkin was brought to the Tigers from Queensland under the Maguire regime but has fallen out of favour.
The talented dummy half will provide cover for Lachlan Croker (head/neck injury) at the Sea Eagles. Croker hasn’t played since round nine against the Canberra Raiders.

How do we sign Luai and Turuva out of absolutley no-where,
And now they're talking about the $$$ we've offered someone...

ps: Like Bula, If he signs it - He'll be overpaid.

His manager I'd guess.

Brooks revealed: “Now surprisingly John Bateman is being shopped around Super League clubs. I understand he is not ready to come back to the UK just yet. He still has a year left on his Tigers contract. Despite that, Catalans are interested.”

The Australian then teased a possible destination, asking: “Could Warrington be interested given the recent news of Matty Nicholson down under to the Canberra Raiders?

Is Stefano really one of the NRL's most in demand players?

Sure, a club would pick him up if we let him go, but one of the most in demand is surely a bit over the top especially when we are talking in the $800k plus region.

Maybe I'm missing something.

Stef for 800k a year for 5 years no doubt with ratchet clauses is a decent pay day for the young guy. He started the year running from the back fence but has gone quiet for most of the year so far. If I were him I'd be thanking my lucky stars and just sign. Don't know how I really feel about it. On one hand he has potential but on the other he hasn't really done much. Are we offering him a contract based on his potential.

It’s overs … and a year too long as most of the WT contract offers are … but I think they have to pull out all stops to keep him …

Luia can’t do much with a winger and 19 yr old Galvin …he needs a couple of other players too build upon ..

The Simpkin possible release is interesting, because the only thing we gain is a roster spot for the remainder of the season and roughly half a years salary. He was never on our books for next year so there is no long term gain.

So is there a swap or another player from another club in the mix or are we just giving the kid a break. I actually think he is not far off being a serviceable NRL player, not an elite, but your meat and potato style player. I guess TDS is the no9 next in line and we have a club full of meat and potato standard players. Fingers crossed we have a player like Skelton lined up
Use the money to front load some contracts
