Why do you love Leichhardt Oval?

Since the news of Leichhardt may hold its final few games in the NRL.
I want to see what made people fall in love with the famous 8th Wonder of the World and do you think that it should be left in the past or be given the upgrade it deserves.

Played there when it was an oval, took a few “special”girlfriends to the footy there, saw many champs play there, especially Barnsey who owned the joint in my formative years , was there for some big games eg Amco Cup final v Norths, match v Panthers when we had to win, saw numerous farewell games there for so many of the greats, loved everything about it.
But it’s not a real NFL ground now, times have changed and imho I think it belongs in the memory bank.

You're literally metres from the sideline..can almost feel the hits...and hear the sledges
Great experience if a small crowd..but no more..we're too popular
Gotta park kms away..stand up to see the game...3rd world facilities..ground announcer drives u nuts
So I haven't been back for a decade or so to what was my 2nd home every fortnite in the 60s and 70s
Go to Alliance quite a bit, which whilst comfy isn't the same experience
Homebush a waste of time

It's a great experience.

With the amount of games there being very limited, moving forward... these will be an easy sell out. Every Tigers fans needs to experience it.

The atmosphere is unreal.
The walk to the stadium.
Planes flying over and all that...

I think Suncorp is the #1 stadium in the country but Leichardt is something special.

I love LO for nostalgic reasons I suppose?
The sight of Larry Corowa scooting away for a try or Gary Jack safe under the high ball and returning with interest. Good times with friends and family.
Even after a loss you left the ground in good spirits.
LO delivers an experience that no other ground can. As a spectator you are in the game, not merely looking on.
Only one team has beaten the Sharks this season, c'mon tell me LO wasn't a contributing factor?
The tries are better at LO!

Spent many years sitting or standing on the hill when well over 20,000 crowd in attendance, But the so called record keepers these days are saying the capacity for the ground is only 15,000
Look up the old records,
Even in round 20 2005
West Tigers played South's in front of 22,870
Spectators At Leichardt oval
Capacity of the ground that day Supposed to be 20,000.

Even this new $300 Million ground Penrith are getting is apparently only going to hold 25,000
Little improvement for Leichardt to hold 25,000 as well.
People lying about our Capacity.
Cause some want us and it gone.

We often make a day or evening of any Leichhardt Oval games. It always has a festive atmosphere and easy to meet up with mates or family in the surrounding pubs. Win, lose or draw it’s generally a good day out regardles. The place goes off after a win.

Taking son to first game this week, second for daughter.

I was planning to mow the lawn, and not watch. Getting them to experience Leichhardt is the only reason I'll be watching. Like a time warp, they live in such a shitty and sanitised world, I'm hoping they learn a few new adjectives for referees.

Great news if true , the old girl needs a face lift .
i worked at the ground about 40 years ago doing all the chain mesh fences and the fence around the footy field , loved going to work them days haha , then off to the pub for a couple beers at lunchtime ,
agree with numbers , I was at the ground Tigers v Parra and it was Chokka , they call3d the number around 20 thousand and yes they were on the toilet block roof and up in the trees , capacity is def 18 k , 20 k

Being a former Magpie I've no nostalgic feelings for Leichhardt. Personally think the place isn't worth the investment to make a boutique stadium. I do believe it needs a small investment to bring it up to standard for all the smaller local/junior sports held there.

For me LO has the obvious Balmain nostalgia, also my family was from the area so it was a real family/club atmosphere. And because we played half our games there, we'd regularly go to Grandpa's place and walk down the narrow streets to the Oval. That's a totally different beast/experience than something like arriving on a train at Homebush with 15 thousand people and fanning out onto a massive Olympic promenade.

Then when you get to the match, I like the viewing experience. I like watching footy at old grounds, I like that it harkens back to older decades. LO reminds me of things like "around the grounds" on the radio, Laurie Nichols, buying peanuts on the hill whilst sitting on a picnic rug etc. That's pure nostalgia in a bottle there, no shame.

And LO isn't quite as quirky as some of the other old grounds - e.g. Brookvale is not a great design for viewing the match, though I can appreciate it's old-school Manly. Belmore has that eyesore train line and mounting yard sheds at one end. North Sydney is picturesque but rolls downhill and has a huge tree down one end, with the grandstand viewing the field at an oblique angle.

LO gets used so much because it was redesigned in the 1970s specifically to provide night-time lighting (which is why it hosted so many Panasonic Cup games) and run N-S (to avoid sun in players' eyes), for up to 20 thousand people. That was just right for NSWRL and all the other rectangle-field events it did and still hosts (e.g. junior footy and soccer).
