Why do you love Leichhardt Oval?

A great day for sport’: Leichhardt Oval receives $40m lifeline as upgrade plans revealed.

Sydney’s Leichhardt Oval has received a lifeline, with the Albanese government announcing a joint $40 million investment into the spiritual home of the Wests Tigers.

The announcement, which was made on Friday, includes $20 million of funding from the federal government, $10 million from the NSW government and $10 million from the Inner West Council.

The Inner West Council last week voted to dedicate $10 million of Council funds towards saving the ground, with Mayor Darcy Byrne describing it at the time as “a crucial and significant step toward the rescue and rejuvenation of one of Australia’s most loved suburban grounds and a future hub of women’s sport in Sydney”.

Laurie used to do the same when he went on kangaroo tours in the freezing pommie winters. He was a tough old bugger and a wonderful bloke to talk to
the old saying says "you can't judge a book by its cover" and that's certainly true with Laurie Nichols.
Some would say he had a rough exterior, but jees, he was a really nice bloke the one time I had the pleasure of saying g'day to him.

Love Leichardt Oval 2 reasons as a kid Sat Arvo sitting on the hill with ground different direction .What is now Keith Barnes stand was opposite on halfway and hearing crowd yell "carn the tiges " .Watching Barnsey kick em from everywhere and Mack and Mara on the wings .
2nd reason -We Occasionally win there !

No, nothing from the tigers.
And there shouldnt be. At the moment they are talking about money. 40m does not go far. Forget the stand at the northern end at the moment.
Talk is cheap. See what is in the approved council plans before commiting. All we have seen is a wish...nothing is commited yet.
This revamp could be years away.

I suggest it will happen quick.. the ground has issues that are potential safety hazards that need to be addressed pronto … The $40m won’t go far enough for much of a grandstand upgrade … but I’m assuming this is why the govts have had to throw them a bone to address these safety concerns ..also it would be nice if the ladies had their own dressing room when they play a double header with the men .

Agree, I’m always skeptical with political promises but it’s an ideal situation for us to have the government agree to the funding without any part of the negotiations involving the tigers.

I only had a quick chat with him when he got on the bus I was driving being the route 500 just past Darling St. en. route to Circular Quay.
What surprised me was how humble and polite he was.

In our defence, most stadium upgrades have been about appeasing people in expensive boxes. Leichhardt mostly needs protection from just falling down.
Fair point.

My unqualified bush mechanic city planner view is that when looking at a map of Sydney, it’s clear that the inner west is already serviced by two massive stadiums rectangular stadiums and two other all purpose stadiums.

The issue of Olympic park being an all purpose stadium seems a very weak business case to justify $40m in tax payer dollars.

That said, the announcement was positioned to help the government repair damage done a few months ago in the protests/marches about violence against women.

In the end, it wasn’t about efficient infrastructure planning, sadly it just came down to buying headlines and sounds bites about women’s change rooms.

For me, I love it. I will get to enjoy improved facilities, and I get to see our chair, Barry O’Farrell show us his worth by finding the angle with the politicians that got it done.
