Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

It's not official, but we are shopping him. We may be stuck with him. I'm not the Oracle.
I think this all started with a journo speculating. I highly doubt we'd shop our vice-captain who sures up our defensive line, brings aggression/spirit & effort and much-needed experience.

Yes he gives away a silly penalty every 2nd match but it's only due to his passion & aggression and getting in the face of his opposition.

Bateman is great for the team, seems to have eveeryone's back (and vice versa) and is obviously quite good defensively. He's just terrible in general attack. Takes away momentum from plays on his side of the field. Stops, starts, jinks, runs sideways.

I'm not sure he is the difference maker you think he is. For 700k, you are 100k off Angus Crichton money as a comparison. Is he 7/8 as good as Crichton? I'd argue he's less than half as good. Worth about 350k. Good squad member at that money, but at 700k, we can do better.

I’ve been one of Batemans biggest critics and agree he has not provided anywhere near 750k per season in value.
However he looked to be playing with far more intensity when he came on the field against the Roosters, was hitting hard in defence and running the ball with venom with limited opportunities.
If that’s the player we are getting each and every week, then we need to keep him.

I’d say Oregon Kaufusi would at least be a discussion point.

I would prefer him over some of the names mentioned. Suggested him before the season and think at the Sharks he is coming into his own abit.

I see Kaufusi as a #3 in rotation or replacement for Klemmer based on style. Has a good defensive work rate but meters always ends up in the 80-90 mark. He has some punch in his runs at times and is hitting his prime years.

Too much rubbish in his game. Causes more problems than he's worth. A few games out of a 4 year contract + missing most of every off season is not what we need.

He has been starting at the Sharks ahead of some pretty decent players.
That tells me the Sharks ideally want to keep him, but surely they have just about maximised their spending for middle forwards.
I really don’t know what Richo is possibly looking at in the UK as even the current props in the English team are average.

yes but he needs to channel his energy and aggression into playing footy.

I agree that while Bateman isn’t living up to his price tag, we have more pressing issues such as the contracts of Naden, Sullivan and Stef.

Bateman is a first grader and atm we are lacking first graders. We have already lost ice and I don’t see any urgency to lose another first grade forward (unless we are replacing with an improvement. I don’t see any improvements coming in)

Agree that’s why I think he would be better value pickup than some of the other names mentioned & has the bigger upside to offer us. He also won’t break the bank like some of the others would.

I do think our roster is somewhat skewed though with props & inbetweener forwards & kids which is limiting our ability to do the upgrades within the roster we need to do for next season. Maybe that’s why the UK is being looked at - we can shuffle cap/incentives and get a player over on a lower cap hold rate. But issue I have with UK is unless someone goes outbound we stay in same position roster wise around weaknesses/strength areas
