One day, someone will come up with a mathematical equation, similar to the NFL combine, to turn selection into a science. The odd undrafted free agent will be the exception to the rule but usually, you can tell a good NRL player from a KOE star.

I personally feel Fainu Sione is the best lock we have in the side.

Without fail NRL players will tell you the speed of NRL compared to lower grades is chalk and cheese.

So you don’t know whether they are fit enough or have the mindset until they’re tested. Unless they’re obviously freaks.

It doesn’t have to be a science. But it should be charted.
Talking about the 3 junior locks for instance.
Matumua, Kit and Faagutu. All three should be categorised as locks and played accordingly.
Through watching training and game day performances then you can assess promotion and demotion within the list.
Currently it’s very hard to see if Faagutu is to be our best lock choice if he is playing prop in the 21s team. Likewise Kit if he is playing off the bench.
Pick stick and switch if required.
Same logic can be applied for just about any position.
It seems fair to say that winning is in the lower grades is not the clubs priority so why not pick the team in this fashion? Why move so many players out of position to cover injuries.

Fair enough.

To use a Bellamyism, if the kid doesn’t want to go and throw bricks around at that age (or even play out of position) maybe he’s not made of the right stuff.

If you play for long enough and watch the game for long enough, you sort of get a sense of what it takes to make it. I just don't think those guys have it. NRL is a completely different proposition to lower grade rugby league. How many Australian schoolboys play NRL? How many U19 SOO? A good percentage of NRL players never played junior reps. You either have it or you don't.

Simple maths too.

WT have how many pathway players each year? 150? And how many WT debutants each year become good solid first graders? 1-2.

The chances are slim.

So because you watch NRL and played local footy makes you an expert in all things considered making it in the NRL? The skies the limit for these kids and it ain't up to anyone but them to determine if they make NRL or not.

We have a terrible track record in development. Very concerning for a self appointed 'development club'.

They way we've treated our young talent this year (and last) is appalling.

We really need a Club Coaching Director who oversees all players in top 30 down to pathways whose charter is to plot their development pathway & what role specific skills and fitness training they need. Not Benji, not Betsey, not Richo ... someone in addition with experience!
