Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Issue we face once again is how hard it will be for us to sign the right players without paying way 'overs'.

Almost impossible anyone of quality now so our recruitment will have to be very strategic with high-effort players that are positive influences on their team mates, experienced and very good defensively.

I'd say ESL is our best option - examples Morgan Knowles, Tim Lafai (1+1 deal), Sione Matu;ita etc.

Tim Lafai … 33 years old

Oh - but I though you said the players can learn to defend supposedly!!

When they move an 18 year-old half to his non-preferred side to act as a bodyguard in Defence you are beyond redemption!
A question you keep dodging is who and where are we getting the better replacement players from ?
I have plenty of ideas as do many of our forum members, I have never seen you once offer a solution.

Much like the reasoning for change in philosophy in the movie Moneyball- the Tigers are trying to replicate what other teams do with no success.

Stop trying to play the same way as everyone else. Make the players available to the club fit a style that suits them. Or find players to fit a style we can adopt. Round pegs, round holes.

Except potentially Morgan Knowles and that’s still a long shot on what I’ve seen of him, but the other two are too old and long past their used by date as decent NRL players.
IF we decided to act fast and move on Klemmer and Bateman as well as letting Stefano head to Melbourne and also hopefully moving on a handful of others including Brent Naden all freeing up cap space, we could potentially end up with a formidable forward pack something like this;

13.Fonua Pole
12.Samuela Fainu
11.Joe Chan
10.Daniel Saifiti
9.Api Korisau
8.Nelson Asofa-Solomona

14.Latu Fainu
15.Charlie Guymer
16.Alex Twal
17.Royce Hunt

18.Alex Seyfarth
19.Sione Fainu
20.Talyn Da Silva
21.Jordan Miller

IF we decided to act fast and move on Klemmer and Bateman as well as letting Stefano head elsewhere and also hopefully moving on a handful of others including Brent Naden all to free up more cap space, the players still currently available to make is a much more formidable forward pack include the likes of NAS, Daniel Saifiti, Royce Hunt, Joe Chan and Charlie Guymer.
Oregon Kaufusi is also a good quality NRL prop and I’d love to see him play for Wests Tigers, but he was supposedly a close childhood friend of Stefano and I have a gut feeling he would want too much overs from us to make him a viable proposition.

Thus forward pack would be much better tfan what we have now and would actually scare opponents;

Not necessarily the guys I'd choose, but I like what you are suggesting.

I think NAS actually fits a number of our actual needs, so long as he isn't mailing it in.

It’s actually astounding how many first grade quality players we have (or don’t have).

We don’t need world beaters, we need some hard nosed consistent first graders.

The biggest issue is having top 30 spots filled with either kids that are nowhere near ready and complete unknowns or players who are contributing nothing but we can’t move on.

Were in a bad spot.
The thing that always gets me is that whenever we need to get players on the market we are always competing against other clubs rebuilding / coming in eg recently it was Saints and Bulldogs rebuilding and Dolphins coming in. Now it looks like Parra rebuilding and 18th team coming in.

The more you think about it, even if NAS played 14 or 15 games per season we would still get plenty of value out of him just with his presence and the confidence it would provide our team having a monster who will scatter defenders and genuinely strike fear into the opposition playing alongside them.
I believe Daniel Saifiti has always been the better more consistent of he and his twin Jacob. At age 28, always keeping himself in good physical condition and never one to take a backward step, I think he would give us stability up front.
It is not much point having NAS if when he goes off for a break we have nobody with his type of impact on the field, that’s where he and Royce Hunt in tandem would be a breath of fresh air.
It is obvious our only edge attack that worries our opponents at the moment is from young Samuela. By adding Joe Chan it would give us another highly aggressive strike option.
Charlie Guymer would be another extremely important piece to the puzzle as he could potentially start somewhere in our back row or add his impact and versatility starting off the bench. Guymer is one who is also capable of filling in as a centre if injuries occur throughout a game which make him even more valuable.

You guys spend a lot of time obsessing over external names that are never going to come here …obviously this doesn’t include NAS who looks like he is on his way

Not sure exactly what names you are referring to, but as you say it appears there is a chance NAS will head our way.
Daniel Saifiti has already been told the Knights need him to depart for salary cap reasons. Not many clubs can afford or would be willing to pay his 800k salary. The Dragons are supposedly interested in him, BUT I’ve heard he and his family are settled on the Central Coast so travelling to Wollongong for training is not the most desirable option.
Joe Chan has an option in his favour to depart Melbourne and as he has not cemented himself as a regular starting player, he could very well be open to being a starting player for a team on the rebuild.
Charlie Guymer is off contract and as much as the Eels would obviously love the keep him, they have way over stocked and over spent on their back row stocks. We would have to pay him on potential to be any chance of getting him, but he’s one I’m highly confident will develop into a high class NRL player very quickly. He’s a country boy with that no nonsense attitude, something desperately need.
