John Bateman #268

I'm not totally convinced around the narrative that it's the Tigers fault these senior players don't aim up. IMO Api Koroisau is proving its on the individual to perform.

If you look at the players in question, I think it has more to do with them than us.

Bateman tries hard. As much as I have given it to him I've never questioned his effort, he is just dumb as dogs shit and past his best. Thats a bad combo to overcome. Smaller backrowers decline quickly.

Papali'i wanted out before he came here. He was never in it from the start. Lack of character right there.

Klemmer started to decline at around 26, 27 years of age. He went into self preservation mode to collect his pay check. He shows zero intent to have a leader of the pack mentality. That's poor character again. More on him than us.

So while we should and can be better as a club, IMO it's the poor character of the players we are signing that's the problem.

I've said for a long time, character needs to be the number one priority when signing someone.

1.Character
2.A desire to achieve something
3.And finally talent.

Workers who are hard and disciplined will lift us off the bottom along with enthusiastic kids.
Players like Ethan Bullemor, Jack Williams, Brad Parker, Kayal Iro. Adding 4 of these types of players round out the squad and allow us to progress. Then an elite outside back may become interested in joining a team on the up with a terrific spine and hard working group.
No, it's on us. We signed them on big $$ despite these signs.

Back for what??? More pain???? I would at least want to know who is steering the ship... wouldn't you??
I don’t care what he wants to know, as far as I’m concerned by not having had a preseason at out club after two seasons shows either the player or the club or both have never professionally managed his situation and his integration at the club. They would have know when they signed him if he didn’t get the first preseason in then he was never gunna get the second one in due to international commitments that are set a few years in advance.
Anyway it’s just more unprofessionalism

I mentioned this earlier in another thread posing the idea after Batemans recent performance that would we be any worse with Galvin as the backrow option instead.
Well since then unbeknownst to most some plans were already in motion to move Bateman on and open up that right backrow slot.
With Sezer currently suspended and Latu being named as HB could we see a future Latu / Sezer combo upon his return?
Is Galvin ready to make a move to the edge to get the most out of his running game and unorthodox style he plays with?
Wait and see I guess, ofcourse the alternative is to move Papali’i out to the edge and put another in at lock at a later stage.
Lots to play out.

The Tigers’ roster overhaul has now extended to Bateman, who is poised to join Sam Burgess’ Warrington in their quest for a Super League title.

Burgess phoned Richardson earlier this week – the pair have a long relationship from their time at South Sydney – and asked if they would consider releasing the English international for the rest of the season.
Bateman’s exit will free up a further $150,000 in the Tigers’ salary cap, with Richardson and Marshall already having more than $1 million to spend next season. It will be close to $2 million if Utoikamanu doesn’t take up the Tigers’ deal.

Asked about releasing Bateman for the rest of the year, Richardson said: “It’s a very simple scenario: we’re building up a war chest. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
“This decision has been made with the full agreement of John and his management. I’ve been working on this cap and this roster ever since round six or seven. We know what we need and it’s not a dramatic amount.

“You keep pouring into the bucket and then something pops out. Greg Inglis has popped out in the past for me, Ben Te’o popped out around Christmas and so did Jaydn Su’A. Clubs get in trouble with their cap. You have to take your time.”

Bateman and the Tigers are expected to reassess his future at the end of the season. The 30-year-old is contracted in the NRL for another two years.

He'll stay at warrington with Sammy, they're shedding
Players as mentioned. Saved 150-200k this year
and most likely roster spot 4 next year. Good business
Most clubs would sign players first then let others go, not us.
Really save 150k haven’t we apparently got 2M in a war-chest should make a big difference then but wait let’s upgrade a development player that will improve us
Once again dumb!!!!

Ive been saying similar for a while as well.
Obviously we have to monitor Fainu and be sure he can handle it. We know Galvin can handle it but will he want to move?
