Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Twal is the Swiss army knife of our forward pack- he's athletic enough to do multiple roles & can play big minutes. Great squad player. But he lacks the dominance in a tackle. If we can get some more dominance through our recruits- hard men that don't get stood over- Twal is a reliable player to have, and somewhat underrated in my opinion.
I'm not knocking Twal, I love what he brings (consistency) just saying If we are adding to the pack I don't think size and 'intimidation' should be the top priority.
I'm also admitting, that I don't know who we could actually bring in that is available and fit what we need, but the guys who are available (NAS, Siafiti's, Knight) are not complimenting what we have, just providing more of the same.
We need Cam Murray (obviously can't get him) which is why someone like Tallis Duncan is intriguing.
We need fast play the balls and guys that can shift momentum on the 3rd tackle to get our spine playing off the front foot, instead of having to conjure magic like they are trying to do now.
If nothing else, get Pole and Sione F extended and continue to develop them both because they have been the stand out performers in a severely under performing pack this year.

I think I get misunderstood at times with the type of players I think the club needs.

No secret that I'd like Jack Hetherington in the club, Corey Horsburgh as well. These guys do not get, I'll say intimidated, but they don't let teams get physically on top easily, if that makes sense. Another guy I like is also from the Knights- Mat Croker. He's a different type altogether, but another that doesn't get walked over in a physical contest.

One thing I don't often talk about- but I love hearing guys like Croker & Hetherington interviewed. You'd expect them to be absolute meat heads, but they are quite quick, smart, articulate & make great points. A level of overall intelligence for our forwards would not be a bad thing. Tallis Duncan, on the other hand, when interviewed is not inspiring.

You can't JUST be athletic. Or big. Or angry. You need a few strings to the bow- and smart is underrated & undervalued.

Big slow forwards, with limited lateral movement?
Twal, Seyfarth, Miller, Johannssen
I know Stef isn't slow, but he's not mobile either.
We need forwards, a prop and probably two backrowers, just saying we need mobile forwards.
Congratulations, you've won the 'most hilarious comment' award today.

With Johanssen confirming he is one of many retentions soon to be announced at the club are we seeing the sliding doors of youngsters?
Ideally the players also getting retained are the likes of: Fonua Pole and Sione Fainu.
Im not that interested in resigning Porter due to his age and also the fact that if we sign a second rower he very likely gets leap frogged.
Tumeth and Feledy go off contract in 2025 and are able to negotiate in November. Both of them i would be happy to see walk. Feledy is pretty decent in KOE but that has not translated at all.
Tumeth is nothing. I still do not understand what the club saw in him ever. Last year Magpie signed players like BWM and Boyling out played him every week. Due to his lingering injuries Sukkar has jumped him as the Second rower to develop.
I do feel they may of jumped the gun on Johanssen. 2 years?!? Really? After one game. I feel he might become a magpie vet and i'm not annoyed about that. He wouldn't be on top dollar either.
Due to Stefano leaving and his 800k being added to the war chest that can be used to extend/sign youngsters and I love that. Depth in the forward pack is what we need. Some more 2 rowers and I am very. Hassett looks the goods. More to follow ....
I would keep Porter... Just because front rowers benefit from more front rowers and the stocks are really slim...

Feledy has been really disappointing. never lived up to the hype.

Yeh, I agree. He can sniff out a try better than most but his creativity isn't much and his defense is suspect.

Lol you haven’t left him with much then..
..he was a standout in the under 12s!!
Seriously, thats the reality..Bellamy assesses their physical attributes..speed/size/agility etc...and then their attitude incl appetite for hard work..to ascertain wheher kids are gonna develop into something resembling a NRL player, and if so,then sprinkles his magic dust to make that happen
We just sign em if they were good juniors without any understanding of how they mite evolve into something special

I dont understand the part where he says --

I'll never be able to proper repay him but I want to put my best foot forward and train the house down, play the house down when I can.

Also the part where Sione Fainu not re- signed.

So on BTR, Chris Warren alluded to some club extensions being announced next week including Tim Johannssen for 2 seasons.

Given we have only 1 roster spot (that we know of) in the top 30 for next season currently available with Stef's departure, I reckon these announcements will be for the Supplementary list or Train & Train list.

Under new salary cap rules, the Supplementary list is for a minimum 4, maximum 6 players on $80,000 each with $3K bonuses for NRL games (cap of $650k), can play from Round 1. This used to be called Development contracts.

Train & Trial contracts are now $1,200 per week, $3,000 NRL game bonus, can play from Round 11.

I'm predicting the following ...

Supp List (note- thinking they will want NRL ready players in this group)
- Heath Mason (already contracted for '25)
- Alex Lobb (already contracted for '25)
- Solomona Faataape
- Reuben Porter
- Nav Willett
- 1 spot left to fill

T & T contract (note - looking mainly at those who are Jersey Flegg this year but given experience in Cup already)
- Tim Johannssen (23 next year)
- Cayne Nicholas (22 next year)
- Vaka Aho (22 next year)
- Herman Tofaeono (22 next year)
- Bailey Hodges (22 next year)
- Lachlan Broederlow (21 next year)

* I reckon the next 4 weeks will determine whether Sione Vaihu & Jimmy Ngutlik get a T&T.

Then the following pathways to also go on / stay on part-time T&T contracts:
Makasini, O Large, Godinet, Taupau-Moors, Haywood, Duncombe, Isdale.

Then recruit another 4 or 5 externally on T&T contracts who bring experience & leadership to our Cup squad.

Just seems on face value we are continually letting players go and not replacing them. I guess maybe we are just constantly upgrading internally with people who never impact first grade.
