Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Dragons are considering making a play for Gutherson.
Would he be a better option for us, giving Bula a break with a couple of seasons at Centre until ready to transition back?
Defensively Gutherson is exactly what we need at the back.

Latu and Galvin will both want to play in the halves because there is bigger money to be earned there and the work rate is less than playing lock or second row (which has the benefit of extending your career and thus leading to more money).

If we try to move one of them to the forwards full time they will likely request a release. I don’t blame them.

I suspect Galvin will leave at the end of his contract in 2026. Possibly before. So good to have Latu there for sure.

I seriously can’t imagine Latu having a long NRL career at centre. He’s a decent defender & played a few ok games at Reggie’s there last year but I don’t think he is athletic enough

If we had the room I don’t mind it. His attitude is what we need. Him and Luai together would be revolutionary attitude wise.

I think Bula is lacking the “it” factor to be our long term fullback. Don’t get me wrong, Bula can be good. But the best teams have fullbacks that are consistently great.

Latu, however.... I could see him becoming a revelation at centre. Strong defender, has a bit of toe to him. He'd be Jamie Lyon-like, with the ability to ball play and tackle everything thrown in front of him.
That could also work. The problem is, will the club have the balls to try these things?
Historically we are very conservative here.
Youd remember mate, for years you and me and a handful of others were adamant Brooks was not a halfback and we copped all sorts of kickback for those opinions. These days its pretty much accepted by the masses and everyone seems to talk about it as if it was an accepted fact a long time ago. It wasnt.
Im not happy with how our spine(s) are playing. I feel winning all these spoons are a byproduct of these spines. We must continue to experiement before we lock them in. In my eyes, Galvin does not have a mortgage on the 6...not yet anyway.

Outside, looking in...

From Batemans comments, the Galvin saga with parents and managers and comments from Benji and Galvin.... I think he's got it locked up. That jersey is his and if it isn't, he's leaving.

I think the arrival of Luai will see a few thing improve.

Alas, looking at the top 30... it's full.
That's without including Sione Fainu [off contract] and Faatape [development contract]

I think the ones we need to leave are quite obvious and there's 5 of them....

1] John Bateman
2] Jayden Sullivan
3] Justin Matamua
4] Brandon Tumeth
5] Brent Naden

Why possibly weaken two positions tho? for the record i’ve been a very big fan of Latu since he burst onto the scene but Galvin in his first season of NRL has done better than you, me & almost everyone in Rugby League thought he would.
The question would be does Fainu offer more value than Doueihi or any of the other centre options.

Having only seen Fainu in lower grades until this season, it's hard to say if he would be 'worse' than Galvin has been. For mine, prior to kick off 2024, Fainu was ahead of Galvin in his career progression.

Hooper thinks Gutho to the Dragons.

Jack Bird would be a no thanks from me also.
He was responding to a post I put out questioning if there is any worth in the Tigers taking a stab at Gutho to ease Bula (or someone new) into the fullback role.
We all see our defensive deficiencies this year. You need a fullback that is not only fit, mentally alert but also has that dog and bone mentality.

Read it this morning ..must have missed that …

Got a link ?
But Holmes’ old Sharks teammate, Jack Bird, has spoken to Benji Marshall about a possible shift to the Tigers having been granted permission to test the market despite having a year left on his Dragons deal.

Bird has struggled to find a consistent spot in the Dragons’ line-up this season and recently chatted with Marshall about his future. The Tigers are yet to decide whether they will pursue the 29-year-old and haven’t tabled a formal offer

That's a fair statement, although I truly believe 2025 will be Guthos last year in the NRL.
