The bloke will end up just being another meh footnote for the history books.
2035 at the pub -
"remember that Stef guy about 10 years ago"
"no"
Even though he's going to be coached by Bellamy, I am pretty much of the same view.
I don't bear any grudge against him. He didn't break his contract which is - sadly - by today's standard almost admirable.
He hasn't been good for a while, and I'm glad the tigers have that money to spend elsewhere, but I'm really not upset with him.
I remember quitting a job a few years ago that I had to give a month's notice for. It was brutal, and tbh if you're leaving any job it's understandable it's difficult to truly have your heart in it.
Imagine a young guy giving several months' notice and losing every week? Maybe he's no Phar Lap, but it'd be pretty tough putting in 100% for that long.
And I don't think the whole "... But the money he's on...", "he's a professional" argument makes any sense. You can be a billionaire and be depressed.
I think an earlier reference to Tarzan and Jane is somewhat apt for big Stef; not that he is a man monster/marshmallow, but more of a very big kid.
It's almost as though he has all the physical attributes, was always bigger than all the other kids and talented to boot...
But he strikes me as a young guy who simply doesn't have that competitive fire in him and is to an extent a square peg in a round hole.
I think he's more Lennie Small ("Tell me 'bout the rabbits George") than Jane, and every man and his dog has told him Bellamy is going to bring out his inner gnome.*
* That was an autocorrect: supposed to be "inner animal", but came out as gnome somehow. Decided to keep it in.
I think the only hope he'd ever have of becoming a great player would be under Bellamy or Bennett.
Time will tell, but certainly not beyond the realm of possibility he fades away in a few years as
@Winston Churchill said.
