2025 Assistant Coach Options

Pat Richards has been around a bit, just a shame he never taught anyone to kick the way he did.

Not always possible to transfer the skills you had to someone else.

no jobs for the boys.

experienced and successful applicants only.

they could be trainers or skills coaches though.
Yep it is imperative the incoming assistant coach is experienced, respected by player managers, has a hard edge, can provide guidance for Benji AND has the know-how to progress the development of skills & tactical nous in emerging players.

Those are non-negotiables as far as I'm concerned.

Similar to the impact Richo has had we need some experience in the Coaching setup, a Neil Henry / Hook type could help Benji make more informed decisions.
Dean Pay as our defensive Coach could add steel similar to what Steve Folkes did for us.
We have a real opportunity to build a successful model and need to get it right this time.

Meninga?
What's he doing these days?
Neil Henry for tactics; Dean Pay for defence…. Benji for press conferences …. Perfect

He was assistant coach with us around the Potter/JT days. I’m pretty sure he was D coach back then.
Went to Japan with Eddie Last I read.

He was with Michael Cheika in Argentina. Was defence
coach when Los Pumas beat the All Blacks for the
first time ever. Has history with benji from the Kiwis
set-up & the club just an idea. John Morris to attack
and Kidwell in as defensive coach. Forget it I just
read that he's signed with Japan rugby & Eddie smh

Obviously not possible now, but I feel Bennet would have been the perfect foil for Benji.

I posted this list back in July as A/Coach options. I've put the line through a few now who would be unlikely after taking up other appointments since then.

Trent Barrett

Steve Georgallis
Brett White
Matt Parish
Anthony Griffin
Joe O'Callaghan
Paul McGregor
Ryan Carr (although contracted at Dragons for '25)
Dean Pay
Steve Antonelli
Steve Murphy

Neil Henry

No disrespect to Pay, but I feel we need to follow suit with the top clubs by incorporating experts with a mixed martial arts or combat sports background for tackling (wrestling), it's working for them.
The Roosters have a former wrestling champion, the Storms' tackling coach has a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and Penrith has a UFC fighter on their staff. Even the Bulldogs have brought in the former Penrith wrestling coach, who has a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, and they have attributed their defensive success to his expertise.
Melbourne Storm has really changed the game in this regard and this approach is why they remain the benchmark as they push the envelope to be the best IMO.

What's The Parrot up to nowadays?
Would he be keen to take the reins again?
I'm sure he'd be salivating at the thought of getting his hands on some of our young stars to assist with their development.

This is EXACTLY why I think Griffin is perfect. His time as a 1st team head coach is pretty much past him. He's not a threat to Benji, while offering experience at not only 1st grade coaching, but player development (Panthers & Broncos roles) & also brought through the Wayne Bennett coaching ranks (Benji's mentor in some ways).

Gordon Tallis loves Hook. Says he was the guy that was responsible for the development of Broncos juniors in his time there.
The thing that worries me with Hook is everything changes in time, Gordon is talking about times 20 years ago.
Johnny Morris is one assistant we have who has experience I wouldn’t be getting rid of him.
Once our squad gets better I’m sure all our coaches will look better.

As much as I hate them I’d be getting guys like Slater, Cam Smith and Luke Lewis in to do some coaching consulting. I think they’d be better than a failed old coach.

Why not both?
TBH I think we could seriously do with both. A proper NRL D coach planning and teaching basics, structure and strategy, and a wrestling coach teaching the arm to arm combat techniques that it takes to bring a big man down efficiently. They are definitely two different disciplines and the sooner we start using the best specialists in their field the better.
