Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

believe tristan powell has been offered a cup deal for next year

he was on his way to hull, but believe visa issues may stop him

no guarantee he will take it up
The Brisbane Tigers connection with Richo could strike again! At least we’re targeting good systems.

re Olam...

Maybe, actually yea checked it's a MCL...

I still have no idea what these are. Kinda proud about that.
One connects your shin bone and the other your femur . I have no idea which one is which . I know the ACL is way worse , because it’s generally much harder to fix , and more painful . I think you lose all control of your acl is done as well , where as the mcl , whilst painful, you can still do your thing . If youre a masochist that is … lol

Tualagi played GPS rugby at the same age
I know a couple of guys that debuted on the wing in year 8 - one from GPS rugby, one from MCS league. Superstars at the time and through high school - one of them played a handful of super rugby games, the other a few of NRL games at a couple of clubs.

Makasini has potential but the real development starts now - what’s he’s done at school is irrelevant in some sense. I don’t know much about him other than there’s been lots of talk in the school rugby circles about him.

ACL -anterior posterior cruciate ligament. Within the knee, along with the PCL. Controls anterior sheer force of the knee and added stability.

MCL - medial collateral ligament. Inside outer edge of the knee. Provides some lateral stability, prevents valgus forces (knee caving inward from external force).

ACL, normally minimum 9 month reco. MCL, anything from 1-2 weeks to several months in the case of a Grade 3.

ACL the far, far worse injury.

Turn it up bigscreen!

I am not suggesting that there won't be more signings to come. I'm just not going to get excited about a rumour that there will be more but rather I'll wait until there actually is more. I'm not suggesting we won't recruit around these guys next off-season and put together a solid squad. Again I'm not going to get excited until we do. Are we taking steps in the right direction? Yeah of course. Does next season look more promising? Unfortunatley, not yet in my opinion.

Plenty to be excited about for mine, especially with Luai being the biggest new arrival at any club, some fresh outside backs and a bunch of already blooded youngsters taking the next steps on their footy journeys.

Need a middle and an edge forward, though also pretty sure that there will be a couple of fresh ones to come and Sione remaining at WT. Probably won't need the shades just yet, but the future is definitely brighter than it was this time last season.

If Richo can’t sell the rejected players, Im resigned to the fact that we are just going to have to try to bring them back to their optimum.

It will take a lot of work, resources and on-going commitment, from sports psychology to skills and fitness.

Maybe JL can help Nado rediscover his game? If he can’t do it at a player relationship level, I’m not sure who else can ( in the entire comp).

And Bateman, well he’s a confidence player too.

We can’t have these assets rotting away without some kind of refit or having a go.

I get it, and this is true (Bar Penrith where he took up the Bulldogs job).

We just need someone in line to replace Benji. We so SO should have hired Flanagan to do the rebuild before Dragqueens signed him.

It's slim pickings. But we need to up our training game and get away from "the good old boys of 2005"
Rubbish…
What about Barrett at Penrith before he took the Manly job,
It seems glazed over he was there twice.
Leave him where he is, he was the assistant that helped turn a Runner up into a club battling for the spoon - where’s the attraction in that?

Shane Flanagan’s best player just came out and declared our old coach is the best coach he’s ever had - hands down…
He’s a myth as well.

Plus not to be a contrarian , it’s hardly a rebuild if you have one of the oldest rosters in the game .
I know this is how Flanagan won with the sharks . Getting in veterans and professionals , to supplement an aging roster, it’s just gonna be a lot harder as he doesn’t have the best forward pack in the comp , like he did at the sharks .
I think the jury is out on the dragons IMO . They still missed the 8 , and I wouldn’t say they’ve improved thier roster dramatically . They’ve just got more aged players in .
I know they improved a lot this year , but the real question with that roster , why were they in discussions for the spoon in the first place .
Where Flanagan can take a lot of credit , is the way he helped build the sharks pipeline, and strengthened thier development pathways.
Most kids in that system live in the area , play for thier club, and grow up loving the “sharkies”. And have filled out a lot of the nrl roster spots .

Flanagan re-built the Sharks by taking on decent players under long contracts and getting their former club to carry some freight on them (Mostly us)
Brad Arthur did the something similar at the Eels...

Our biggest problem is, We're the idiots on the other end of those deals (Paying Players to play against us)
Even now (today) How many in the squad are we happy to let go (For a roster spot)
- And probably have to pay freight on?
Sullivan, Naden, Toa, Matamua, Twal, Klemmer are some that have been tossed up
(That's 3 Million in Cap and 5 Spots)
- I'm sure there's probably more....

Brisbane Broncos set to retain Kobe Hetherington after Michael Maguire intervention
Michael Maguire has made his first big call as Broncos coach, pulling the handbrake on a Kevin Walters-era roster cleanout.

Brutal Season Review: Brisbane Broncos
Michael Maguire has made his first big call as Broncos coach after informing forward Kobe Hetherington he wants to keep him in Brisbane.

Hetherington was given permission to explore options at rival clubs in July by former coach Kevin Walters after struggling to secure a starting spot at Red Hill.

Four clubs, including Wests Tigers, expressed interest in the hard-hitting middle, who has amassed 78 NRL appearances for Brisbane since his 2021 debut.

Hetherington, 25, was tipped to depart the Broncos if the club could secure a suitable replacement.

However that may no longer be the case following the departure of Walters a fortnight ago.

One of the first things Maguire did after being appointed Walters’ successor on a three-year contract last week was call Hetherington.

“He called me last week and I spoke to him for the first time,” Hetherington said after being selected in Australia’s Prime Minister’s XIII.

“He seems like a good fella.

“He’s come out and said he wants me to stay.

“I was contracted until next year anyway. At this stage I think I’m staying.

“I never want to leave the Broncos. I’ve been there for seven years and it’s all I really know.

“I live and breathe the Broncos.”

Hetherington is contracted to the Broncos until the end of 2025, but the club was willing to release him if he could secure a longer-term deal.

However Maguire has recognised Hetherington’s no-frills style and tough pedigree – being the son of former Maroons bruiser Jason Hetherington – may be just what the Broncos need to bounce back from this year’s 12th-place crash.

Hetherington said he was looking forward to starting pre-season training next week under renowned taskmaster Maguire, who has coached some of his PM’s teammates.

“I think we’re in for a bit of a tough pre-season so we’ll see how we go,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait.

“A few of the boys around here that have had him are scaring me a bit. It should be good.”

Hetherington has only had sporadic starting opportunities given he is stuck behind Kangaroos star Pat Carrigan in the No. 13 pecking order at the Broncos.

He still has ambitions to become a regular starting player and hopes he can prove to Maguire he is worthy of a spot next year.

“At the end of the day it’s on me. I need to have a big pre-season and come out fit,” he said.

“If I do all the right things, I think I’ll get a good shot at it.

“I need to go out there and prove I’m a starting player.

“It’s still my goal. I don’t want to be a bench player my whole life.

“I need to have a big pre-season, work hard and hopefully get the call to start.”

Hetherington’s manager Chris Haddad said he was seeking clarity from Maguire over his plans.

“I have to see Madge and Simon Scanlan (Broncos recruitment chief) in the next week or two, we’ll meet and take it from there,” Haddad said.

“We haven’t asked for a release, but we have permission to talk.

“There’s still a lot of interest around in Kobe, but I’ll see what they have to say first.

“Kevvie liked him, too, but we need to see what role he plays next year.

“Every player wants to be in the starting side. He’s no different to any other player.

“Everything is still up in the air. I’ll talk to Madge and see what his plans are for Kobe.”
