Fonua Pole #257

While we have the cap space, I'd be locking someone like Pole down. Front load the contract if possible.

It's pretty much a no-brainer decision. He's commanding a spot, seems to love the club, the club appreciates what he brings & he fits the development club criteria.

Plus, with uncertainty regarding Utoikamanu- you lock up the new generation.

I love how he goes looking for the ball and runs so hard. And he's gotten much smarter with his step and he runs confidently even when momentum is low.

However, unpopular opinion here, but I'd say he's our 3rd best prop at the moment and maybe not that because of his defense. He regularly bounces off players, often tackles in ways that allow quick play the balls, see him on the ground not able to get to marker, and also misses tackles and makes poor reads. Stef, klem, Twal, seyfarth are all decent tacklers.

I don't think it's from lack of effort or anything, he gives everything, but he has to get his technique sorted. When he goes high he isn't able to stick, and tackling low eliminates his physical strength and enables quick play the balls. At a proper club they'd probably be working on that non stop because he looks like a player that loves work and he is very eager in defense, despite his problems with it.

When you’re winning games you get to work on more of the one percenters
I’m sure Bellamy said this years ago in an interview on ch 9
Regardless of who said this I think it is a contributing factor to why we don’t players improve when we think they should in certain areas

As good as he’s going, he’s not the kind of player teams will be falling over themselves to sign a year in advance.
Not so sure about that.

The sooner we lock him up the better the chance that we do a better deal, even if it has to involve the ratchet clauses and incentives that seem to be in all the contracts these days.

Unfortunately he's very much on the radar now and getting a fair amount of exposure in the media, so I think that come 1st November this year there may be a reasonable amount of interest especially if he keeps going the way he is.

I think you're underestimating how much he's rated by other clubs....
Moreso than Stefano you'll find!!

The silence is the killer,
If we don't extend him early - He'll have a half a dozen offers (If not more) - Not including ours...

Even you talk about how this club kills players - imagine how he'd be at the Storm atm....
I have no idea how we got him from them.

Anyone know what's going on here with Fonua?

I didn't get the impression he was genuine in his last interview (similar lip
service to stef) I saw a while back. I hope i'm wrong.

Is he looking at the exits too on Nov 1st?
