Cricket Season Thread

In days gone by a touring side started in WA and worked themselves around the country till they got to the Gabba for the first test. They played all the shield sides and usually a country side mid week. Not only did it help the touring sides get use to local conditions, it also meant our players were all playing lots of four day cricket in the shield comp.

Now we get two very under done teams arriving in Perth a few days before the test with basically no local conditions under their belts, and we wonder why they flop. Then of course there is the lost revenue when this test is done and dusted in under three days. A

Time for some retirements, hopefully the retirees can replace Dastardly Dave and his brown suit in commentary. Start with Lyon as he has been utterly useless since getting injured in England. Smith and Khawaja are the oldest batters and our Dad's army of bowlers need some new blood as they get puffed after 25 overs at which time Lyon abruptly kills all momentum. The dilemma is they are too old to find form in Shield games because then their workloads will need to be managed so they will be rested from Tests.

The bowling is okay. There's plenty of decent options including pace bowling. But you've got Marnus and Smith who are in slumps as Marsh isn't a top 6 test bat. Honestly Beau Webster would be better. The guys making shield runs are Jake Lehmann and Oliver Davies but one has just re-entered first class cricket and the other has just arrived.

The team have been pretty successful the last 2 years. Batting depth a big issue but I wouldn't be hitting the panic button with the bowlers just yet.

I reckon guys like Usman, Lyon, Smith, Starc, would all be eyeing off The Ashes next summer as their swan song. Question is how many of them make it? None of them will be under 35. Lyon will be 38. Usman will be a month shy of 39. If they don’t win this series decisively, I reckon big changes are afoot for next summer.

Happens a lot more than it used to. Couldn’t even win a series against the Windies on home soil.
This is a very good side who have won way more than they have lost over the last 3-4 years. Bit of a nearly side, Home series loses to India and just missing out over there and not winning an overseas ashes make them just under great.

Agree though that next Ashes will be the swan song for a few of the guys, and Aus cricket will be moving into a new phase. Plenty of young guys with promise but not many putting it together consistently in Shield.

Starc looking like he wants to stay out there for as long as he can and get past India's score. It won't happen but i like his attitude

The lead up to this test series could not have been handled worse
The preceding 3 weeks we played 6 white ball games the first 2 included a handful of our test players . Prior to that Starc ,McSweeney and Carey and Kwajaja played some red ball cricket .
Cummins and Head and Marsh played absolutely zero cricket for ages
As a result we look like a team totally out of form with the bat
Starc looks in form bat and ball and Hazelwood looks good with the ball McSweeney got a good one .Carey has form
Marnus and Smith are in the team based on past history as you couldn't pick them based on the last 12 months
I assume Head and Marsh will eventually play themselves into form
Biggest worry is Cummins who conceded 61 runs in a very bowler friendly pitch with low scores and Marnus who looked clueless and Smith who jumps across to off stump and gets out the same way time and time again
The priority of CA last few months is more to do with reducing workloads and quality family time NOT a hard nosed train hard work hard and taking a ruthless approach to winning an important series

Marsh bowling 118 kph half trackers sure releases any pressure
Pat also getting belted a bit ..We could be chasing a very big total which don't think will matter as I doubt we could chase a moderate total
