John Bateman #268

While wearing Wests Tigers colours he very rarely run the ball hard, very rarely tackled hard, yet wanted tn fight everyone.
That says it all to me as you ONLY earn the right to be a hard man by running the ball hard and tackling hard.
The churping mouth, the stare downs and aggro are all signs of you are past it or frustrated with your own form.

The Article in the Sun Herald this morning by Christian Nicolussi "Silence of Marshall 'bizarre': Bateman"..... is simply "bizarre" in itself, claiming he was made the scapegoat for another disappointing Tigers season sounds more like paranoia to me. Then citing Brooks as a similar example of poor treatment by the club is a ridiculous comparison when you consider the relative contributions made by each to the club.
For a player of his experience, the the discipline he exhibited last season was extremely disappointing before he was overshadowed by his younger less experienced team mates. Yet the article goes on to say "Bateman was concerned about the development of the Tigers younger players, saying "I wanted the kids to learn. They have a great bunch of kids there. At times, I didn't fell like they were learning how I wanted them to learn and I wanted them to get better". Well John, you had the opportunity to do that for two seasons and for the greater part of that time, you failed miserably.
This article is totally one sided, someone is clearly deluded here and it's not the club, nor Benji. We really are better off with this guy is out of Sydney on that point at least we all agree!!
You’ve missed the point.
It’s those who claim he was toxic and fighting with the coaches that have scapegoated him.
The club has done neither. The club isn’t the source of all this crap. Media and people with an axe to grind initiated it and then disillusioned fans have taken it as gospel and run with it.

Whilst this article is purely from Batemans side of things is anyone not concerned by this:

Apart from losing, Bateman was concerned about the development of the younger players, and said: “I wanted the kids to learn, they have a great bunch of kids there. At times, I didn’t feel like they were learning how I wanted them to learn, and I wanted them to get better.

“I refer back to [former Tigers’ halfback] Luke Brooks. The period I thought ‘Brooksy’ should have been playing State of Origin and for Australia, he got caught in that trap of being there, and he didn’t pick anything else up, and he was made the scapegoat for years and years.

Forgetting the last part is referring to Brooks, the inference is very clear about lack of development. I hope this has been rectified.
This actually gives a little of bit of weight to the rumour that he was upset about the senior players bearing the brunt of criticism from Marshall while the younger guys were let off easy. Part of the development of younger players is holding them responsible for their stuff ups so they learn from their mistakes. He may have been upset that this wasn't happening.

Bateman was no scapegoat. He was simply shit the whole time he was here. He offered nothing other than giving away shit penalties at bad times during the game and how dare Marshall call him on it. We will be better of without his cancerous attitude, in particular our juniors.

You don’t know what you are talking about.

Bateman didn't get on with Ricky, Hastings and Benji. There is a common theme here. He strikes me as someone who doesn't take accountability for his own performance.

Hastings has never gotten along with anybody. You can discount that. I’ve never heard any story of him not getting along with Stuart.

Talking Shit, Ricky didn't want him to go....
Bateman switched managers (To Moses maybe) and his ticket was bought after that.

Also had Covid / Border closures to deal with, Went home with all the uncertainty.

Did he say that or did people put those words in his mouth for him?
If he did say it, He wasn't wrong.....
Kids at this club are treated like Fkn Rock Stars.
Benji instigated it.
- And this club farms it. Continuosly....

Last bloke to earn his debut at this club I reckon was David Gower, Maybe Farlow at a stretch.
It Stinks, Jordan Miller claiming his hard work had paid off to earn his debut made me vomit in my mouth - A 19 year old kid who's 6'4" and 130kg...
Never had to work on or off the park in his life.

I don’t think Bateman was terrible while he was here, but he definitely wasn’t the senior player we thought we signed the at was going to set an example. He played above his weight every week if you ask me; problem was he also have away stupid penalties with his lack of discipline.

I’m a bit dumbfounded why the cowboys signed him as a leader. I think they might be in for tough year, and if so, Bateman will probably go the same way he did at the tigers.

Does it matter now ?
But let me say that if the coach wanted him he would be still here. I don’t think Benji has the personality or coaching credentials to handle agressive senior players. Someone like Bennett or Bellamy would have handled it differently. They would have taken Bateman to a quiet space and told them what the problems were, it sounds like Benji wanted to establish power in the dressing room by taking on a hard head in front of his younger players.
So, imo, Bateman was made a scapegoat and as an international he probably felt aggrieved.
After that I’m sure Richo and Benji sat down to work out an exit plan. Yeah, let him go to England for Xmas, but start looking around for a new club.
Benji can’t afford to have anyone around who might challenge him. He’s fighting for his life you know so the club have said, we’ll back you but no results this year and you’re gonsky.
