1st trial thoughts?

Marshall will have expectations from the trial. That try from Mason highlighted his potential and other young players have been mentioned in the comments. It is great to watch how our younger players perform. Mason with his pace and build reminds me of another highly credentialled young fullback we had at the club. I am glad he is signed to WTS as I would not like to be competing for his signature in the future.
Mason just seemed solid.
Yet compared to Bula, he is just too square and dry. Does the job, does it safely but doesn't cross the line.
..
Look I like him, he seems to be a good player developing. Very safe and solid at the back, we just need him to cross the line a bit more if he is a keeper.

(Please forum, reply with a name so we know who on earth were talking about here..)

I see Mason as a 5/8 more than a FB….

showed some glimpses but his issue is application. switched off a couple times and it either led to tries from the opposition or errors.

very raw but you can see why WT have invested in him.
During the game I was saying that no.19 is making heaps of F-ups.
He was definitely having a go but a bit too eager to please and that was causing errors in defence and positioning. He settled into the game in the second half more and showed something worth persisting with.

If we don’t improve our line speed by 100% this week, we are in for a long season… this should be the single message from Benji to the team

The A defender sets the line speed and that should be the first relased from the tackle (in a three man system) that is why fitness is such a key aspect of this aspect of the game. The A defender has usually just made a tackle, then retreated 10m and has to be ready to go again. This is why PTB speed is so important and why dummy half is a specialist skill. If the hooker can get the A defender interested it gives his reciever time as once the ball is released the A defender pushes in on the receiver and the along with the B defender start to put inside pressure on the play. The markers and defenders on the other side of the ruck have to slide to close the gate. The first try by the Dogs on Sunday was caused by us not shutting the gate - this was simply lazy play; ie not doing the 1%ers. We need to fix that up this weekend.
