It's not NRL but I see Marty Sheargold was sacked for giving his personal opinion that he finds the Matildas boring.
It seems having an opinion that doesn't involve pretending womens sport is equal in quality to mens is now illegal.
Whether you agree or not, surely he's entitled to have an opinion.
Don't get me started on the cult that is the team that once ran fourth. The level of hysterical hyperbole surrounding them is just insane.
You can hold an opinion, even state it, however if you do so publicly like he did and especially in the fashion that he did, then get ready for the backlash. It came across as a mysogenistic attack rather than a genuine critique.
Thats just dumb.

It came across to me as stating a personal opinion.
I'm not into labels designed to shame. He voiced his opinion. An opinion that didn't promote violence, or hatred or bullying or any other nastiness. It was just his opinion.
Why should there be any backlash?
The fact that you rightly think it's an automatic given is the bigger problem of how we all must now follow the one line of homogenized interaction.

It was the way he said it. There was a condescending nastiness to it. He was swearing, he attacked the competition in a sexist way...it was unecessary.

I dont like the "tillies" either. I believe they are an extremely over rated and boring group who receive far too much acclaim for a team thats average at their very best. Id much rather talk about female sporting teams that actually achieve....The Australian womens cricket team are so dominant that when they very occassionally lose, it becomes newsworthy in several countries. How about the female component of the Australian Dolphins? They have been worldwide stars for the past 4-5 Olympics. The Diamonds...amazing team that has won 12 from 16 World Cup titles. These are the ladies we should celebrate.

The fundamental claim should be about their incompetence, not their gender. Attack their record, whilst promoting others. It isnt hard to do without acting like a clueless moron. His dumb comments have driven support for that team now. Albanese called them legends....talk about a backfire lol.

Albenese has no idea what is going on. Legends indeed.
One man loses his job for voicing his opinion ( no free speech for him).
A whole school chants terrorists slogans, no worries.
This country has gone to the dogs.

They peaked at the last world cup and it is looking downhill from now, aging roster no good talent coming through the last one was Fowler and she looks to have the weight of the country on her shoulders, then there's Kerr 32 this year and taking forever to get over the ACL questions remain if she will ever get back to her best, all the signs of a team going backwards.

I agree, that was their peak. So why are they celebrated? They arent very good.

Looks to me that kids love them and can relate because they play the game, their likes flow through to their parents creating a snowball effect in popularity doesn't seem to matter how they are going on the field but you would think the novelty would wear off if they don't turn it around in a couple of years.

Is the issue that it's his opinion or that his opinion was offensive to (apparently) a latge group of people?

I've noticed over the past couple of days a pile on of celebrities putting the boot into a bloke who's lost his career for the heinous crime of having an opinion.
Yet, the comments from regular people that respond to the articles in the comments sections are overwhelmingly in support of Sheargold's right to have an opinion.
Maybe it's not that easy to control people.

And what is offensive?
I find it offensive to be asked on any government form if I'm male, female or other.
It's a ridiculous question that raises the possibility that I'm some other form of life or an inanimate object.
It's an offensive question to me, but hey if they want to ask dumb questions they can go ahead and ask. My delicate sensibilities shouldn't control them.

I thought he was hard done by....he trod a fine line and I think lost the plot a little, but its a funny (not haha funny) old world we live in these days
Hes a comedian and a satirist and context of his program when the comments were made have been lost

Well, I suppose offensiveness is determined by the society and culture of the time? In some parts of the world it is offensive to show affection in public and in others it isn't. In some parts of the world Marty wouldn't have been questioned about his comments, Liesel Jones wouldn't have a job in radio and a woman's soccer team wouldn't be allowed to be so important to any section of society.

Are they still popular or is it just the media saying they are? I feel like there was huge support during the world cup but are they still relevant?

The last friendlies they played in Aus still produced large crowds most of them young fans and their parents, the support is still there but don't know how long that will last if they keep getting beaten, they look like a team in decline.

We've counted at least five major issues boiling away in the background that must be some sort of distraction for rookie coach Benji Marshall. In no particular order, they are:

A stoush between current and former board members that threatens to end up in the Supreme Court

A push to ease veteran prop David Klemmer out of the club
Former player Jordan Miller's legal action following his sacking for failing to turn up at training on time
An arm wrestle with the NRL over whether centre Justin Olam can be medically retired, potentially freeing up $1 million in salary cap space
The fight to convince gun playmaker Lachlan Galvin the club has a future before he goes to the open market on November 1

Have we missed anything? Marshall, as his fights to prove he has what it takes to lead a club, has enough on his plate without dealing with these off-field dramas coming across his desk.

As James Graham told Triple M: "The Tigers play a lot of teams (early) that didn’t play finals last year. It’s the Eels next week, the Dolphins away the following week, the Warriors at home and then the Broncos before the Knights again. It's a favourable start for Benji's second year in charge. There's no such thing as an easy game but you'd look to build off that (draw). It’s important they get their game management right and look to close out and win tight games."

Re Graham. Was this before or after the Broncos game last round?

The first item is a non issue for wests tigers it’s a HBG that is now at arms length

Klemmer, Miller and Olam would all be being dealt with by Richo

Galvin would involve Benji in any contract discussions, but likely to be after the season

We’ll done James Graham 😵‍💫
