Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

With Klem and Olam going, that would free at least 1.25mil in the cap for this year and next

Some decent money to play with

Say Taylan gets 500k, could probably pick up another decent fwd

The amount of bitching and moaning on here after 1 round is ridiculous. Season '25 already written off. Had 7 debutants playing and missing half the spine. Add to that, Newcastle isn't half as bad as what people think; plenty of firepower all over the park. We did ok apart from an unacceptable amount of missed tackles. We will be 1-1 after the Eels game and sanity will be restored....at least for another week!
Newcastle is a half decent team in defence especially so can understand attack to be clunky.

However missing 55 tackles in round one should be called out. Either the players arnt listening or the coaches can't coach or the fitness isn't good enough.

Eels will be favourites for next game. Even with Moses out. API will make a difference but wel see if they can sought their defence out otherwise it will be along year again.

We need two centres not one. Sorry but Douhie,Faatape, and the rest arnt up to it defensively.

Seyfarth should not be in the 17 so right edge back rower and another prop/Lock.

Not sure why S Fainu only got 15 minutes off the bench? The forwards were gassed and yet Marshall barely used him. Need to sought that out.

Hope we can get a positive result with the Olam retirement decision but what about May's court appearance tomorrow?

You can hope, but you can't always count on it being over, done and dusted one way or the other tomorrow.

These court matter can drag on and on, not to mention the NRL dragging their heals when it comes to a decision about his future, then you have the question about his fitness and readiness to play.

Some people have May being announced in the the run on side Tuesday afternoon. 🤣
May firstly would need to win his case , if there is any way they think he can win it and the Tigers have had a chat to him he would be gym fit and running fit I would think , he would need tackling practice , ball work , game time , but he could be doing some of this with mates etc , not as effective but better than nothing , he signs on he plays 2 to 3 games in reserves first

The issue is not the playing group - it’s that we don’t have any structure in attack and it’s the same repeat as last year.

Honestly - we didn’t even throw one simple block play.

We have mason who’s small and quick and has a good step - why wouldn’t they run a block play and have him playing out the back to see if he can get outside the defense or step inside?

It’s not the players

It’s the basic 101s that everyone is complicating about and it all comes down to everyone sceptical of benjis coaching ability …

He has yield us 3 wooden spoons, the worst attacking team in the comp and one of the worst defensive teams AND we have better players this year.

Everyone is hopeful it will turn around but there’s nothing in round 1 that suggests our attack has improved

We had a very Dogs type defence yesterday. They had a lot of missed tackles last year too but the rest of the team always scrambled to cover and they ended up with one of the best defensive records. I was pleased with how we defended it was just our goal line attack that needs work. Galvins last tackle options were predictable and Luia didn’t add much there either. But Galvins only a kid and they need more experience together so improvement will come.

Great highlight!
I went back through all of the team stats of the dogs season and there are multiple games of 50+ and 40+ missed tackles. Funnily some of those are even when the dogs put on a score like 32-2 v knights or 41-16 vs Broncos.
The dogs finished the season with a missed tackle avg of 38.68
Missed tackles does not seam to be notable concern for coaches with many of the final top 8 teams feature in the top 8 missed tackles on avg for the season. A funny stat lead by the premiers (as in worse) last season is ineffective tackles. What are ineffective tackles?
You can see that in the game stats if a player/team is credited with a tackle break it leads to a missed tackle for the opposition player/team.
But what are ineffective tackles?
I keep going back to the line breaks conceded vs tries conceded that shows our defence in round 1 was on the right track.

I’d say Penrith’s top end line speed would result in some arm grab type tackles but they cover for each other better than anyone.

The stat to fix for defence is Run Metres Conceeded.
The top 8 best sides defended run metres were last years top 8.
The other two important stats are Line Breaks Conceded and Tries Conceded.
Also the best sides of this are last years top 8.
Some coincidence I guess because they also had the most wins but it does go to show those wins were built off defending their line and try line and not just out scoring teams.

For the record, this is based on averages not total games. As obviously the top 8 would lead the totals by playing more games.

Yep same style as Penrith too. They miss their share of tackles. First contact needs to be better and 60 is too many but i'm not super worried about it, yet. As long as line speed and the effort is in the scramble is there.

It’s because they never try to dominate the opposition in defence or attack .. we out no fear in the runner that we are going to belt him, this catch and hold the ball up crap they try to get Seyfarth to employ is so weak and allows the ball carrier to offload at will .. we act as if the scoreboard is the only measure of who is winning the contest

How much Fkn cap room do we need?
We let go of 1.2 in backrowers to sign no one! If you want to make some space - our 24-30 could sod off and we wouldn’t even Notice.

I say this every year but I don't know how much a good centre is going to help when the only time they get the ball is when rucking it out of our own half.

It's only round 1 but I don't remember Faatape getting the ball in the opposition red zone, AD got it a few times but our line was way too flat to do anything.
