You have made your position perfectly clear. Don’t dilute it now to win an argument. You meant what you said, now own it.

I was talking footy.
He isn’t doing the 1%ers or extras he was doing last year.
I wasn’t impressed with his 5/8 play, but as a footballer in general, he was always trying and was one of the very few who looked like they gave a shit.
I’m not seeing a lot of this from him this year.
