But I would imagine that the integrity of the game, particularly when media outlets are happy to jump on the critique of loopholes and bring negative press from that angle, would be enough of an incentive to tidy it all up.

Only when inequalities in rosters and results due to salary cap “massaging” starts affecting the number of viewers and therefore revenue will the NRL get serious about making changes and enforcement.

If the NRL were smart they would get onto it pronto. There are way more young kids playing AFL and soccer these days. This next generation are probably going to want to watch AFL and soccer as well. Combined with issues with head knocks, the NRL could find competition for viewership increases massively in a very short period of time. The NRL should try to get and keep a very level playing field ASAP IMO.

Its a completely reactive rather than proactive approach. If someone gets caught, they will come down hard on them (like the Storm and Bulldogs) to preserve the integrity of the game and give the impression that they enforce the salary cap. But they're not going proactively look for cheating, even though they know it happens.

All you need to do is listen to any ex-player, administrator or Jurno. They all say teams cheat the cap, they all know and constantly even joke about it. Almost everyone has a story about dodgy deals and theres been so much evidence over the years.

The NRL is one of the only competitions in the world that has a salary cap with zero transparency. Its designed to be cheated. Theres a million ways around it.

Any competition needs to have one or the other. Either a salary cap with complete transparency of player earnings (US sport) or if there is no transparency on player salaries it needs to be a free market with no salary cap.

Probably a combination of both Taylor/Pascoe but bellyache took the opportunity when he saw the Fox's speed on display at LO when pecker headed Pascoe decided to go away on a break, one of many C ups we can thank him for.

We hesitated and bellyache pounced his potential was on display for all to see but as usual back in those incompetent times we were slow off the blocks and lost him.

I don't disagree with most of this. I also don't disagree that it happens in a number of ways, in most places.

But I was responding to you saying the NRL have zero interest in sorting it out, by saying there are several reasons why they should and likely do, to a degree, have interest in sorting it out. Though I do recognise that it is more often than not reactive as you said. That being said, all responses to poor policy in any context are reactive until you fix the policy and make it bulletproof enough to actually provide some proactive protection.

We're mostly in agreeance on the current state of the situation being average I think.

Exactly the same, personally think it's a total waste of time. It's been completely sanitised from what it used to be. Used to love the guys belting eachother added theatre, passion and drama. Now it's just another game that completely dominates league for 6 weeks. Can't wait for it to end.

I hate how much talk there is about it early in the season. Who cares? The week to week comp is outstanding.

It’s just another game now. It’s purely to lure fans of other sports because it’s on mid week. That’s it.

I don't think there's any hard evidence of this. Though I do know that is an opinion shared by a lot of fans.

Wouldn't it be nice if the game had some quality and thorough investigative journalists who could actually investigate some of these? Instead we are lumped with tabloid gossips who only access information by sucking up to those more important than them.

You guys sounding like AFL truthers and the envious dribble they love to sprout this time of year. Some of the crap im seeing on socials from a minority of Perthites is laughable. A sellout is great for our code in a hostile environment, and a great lead into the expansion of the Bears.
Origin is an awesome time and a superb concept still, despite it not being the games we saw early 90s. Still means plenty to Queenslanders, the state and Brisbane was buzzing this year, ever been to the Caxton before and after? Thats culture and a love for the game right there... Even if it is QLD....On par with what we see with NFL teams and communities. I know Santana will love that one lol.

Agree at present the NRL is killing it. With DAZN and similar online platforms wanting a piece of the pie the money will go way up before it goes down (if it goes down). Ten or twenty years, who knows.

We can thank Jason Taylor for doing more harm to this club than any other single coach which is a massive but very unwelcome achievement when you think about it.
The worst coach i have ever seen in my over 70 years of life.

Hard to disagree so much happened with him at the helm the start of the big 4 splitting up, a hand in the fox leaving and the reason Paseka left for Manly because he wouldn't give him a shot at 1st grade.

The destruction he caused at our club left a foul smell on his coaching career looking like he will never land a 1st grade gig again.

When the camera swings to the bulldogs coaching box and focuses on him it just makes you cringe and shake your head.

I have a love/hate relationship with how much the powers that be have tried to eliminate the physicality. The game has been watered down to a ridiculous degree. However, I see the logic behind it. CTE is a pandemic among ex athletes. I watched a story on Mark Carroll a not long ago who has shown early signs of it. Paul Green suffered from it, and im guessing a ton of other ex players as well. So I get the reasoning. But at the same time, the game is almost unwatchable. The day they eliminate the kick off is the day I will pack it in. They are gunning to eliminate it cos they hate players running off the back fence into brick walls. They’ll probably never eliminate it outright, rather give teams incentives for going short, the same way they have eliminated penalising teams for drop outs not going 10.
