Taylan May knocks back Wests Tigers’ $1.5 million offer, wants shorter deal
Michael Chammas

Off-contract centre Taylan May has rejected a three-year, $1.5 million contract extension from the Wests Tigers, informing the club he wants a shorter-term deal on more money.

The Tigers last week tabled a three-year deal to keep May at the club after an impressive final seven weeks of the season, notching up four tries, three try assists and six line breaks in those outings.

However, sources with knowledge of the situation, talking on the condition of anonymity, told this masthead that May has knocked back the club’s first offer.

The Wests Tigers are preparing to reduce the duration of the term but are in negotiations about his value.

May was given an NRL lifeline by the Wests Tigers this year after he parted ways with the Panthers last year. He was given a $1200-a-week train-and-trial deal at the Wests Tigers and earned another $21,000 in match payments ($3000 per NRL game).

His contract with the Penrith Panthers was worth around $650,000 per season before he reached a settlement with the club following an attempt to terminate his contract.

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett has always held a high opinion of May’s ability and had him tour the Bunnies facility earlier in the year before he decided to join his brother Terrell at the Wests Tigers. The Rabbitohs are monitoring the situation at the Tigers.

Bit worrying that he wants a shorter deal, but probably understandable given our current predicament. Hopefully we improve enough to make him want to stay here by the end of the next deal.

I reckon he's looking at R360.. and why wouldn't he... Go and earn $1-$2 million a year and set your family up for life...

Also he's worth well more than 500k a year.. It was wishful thinking by the tigers that they'd sign him on less money than that..

I reckon we will keep Terrell long term, don't think Taylan will stay though - not with the potential money he can earn overseas.

He was on $650k at Panthers last year
Not sure why this is playing out in the media,as the competition will only increase the interest...youve gotta think weve low balled him a bit given his 7 weeks with us was at least as good as it was at the remiers

Yeah, I thought getting him to sign a contract for 3 years on 500k would be a dream come true, the way he played after being out for so long was impressive.

Unfortunately, the news today if true has woken us up to the fact that he's worth more moolah and we will have to pay it, just hope he doesn't expect ridiculous money.

$500k is cheap .., but does he have another suitor in the NRL ?

R360 might never getting off the ground…

Who is leaking the negotiations to the media ? Assume it isn’t Richo

I don’t blame him. With his issues let’s be realistic he ain’t having a decent post footy carear in the game , needs to maximise his earnings and already has seen how loyal clubs can be in the game . He is looking out for number 1 and getting best contract he can

Whilst it might be exciting for us as fans to lock players in for multiyear contracts on unders, I do believe it ends up blowing up in the club's face when players performances show they are worth much more in the open market and start getting suitors and managers begin the agitating and it disrupts the season and playing group. Or the other side of the coin is they say screw it; I'm just playing to my contract value...no more, no less, and we all know the difference in a game is often the 1% plays. Better we pay them what they are worth and save all the angst. Taylan is worth much more than the $500k we offered him....perhaps closer to the $650 he was on at the panthers. Just get it done richo...he is worth at least one and a half Toa's.

He is not an unproven Junior we can cash in on either, has shown he is an NRL first grader even before he joined us.
