I have always believed there is not a reason why anyone should own a gun (farmers for pest control the sole exception) although i do understand why people join shooters clubs for recreation.
Gun ownership should be strictly monitored (Switzerland model) and applied very strongly to all who own guns.

Add to that no access to the use of a gun outside of the target range, strictly monitored by the gun club.
