OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

i'd like to know when this tax free ends?
is it for the first thirty players they sign and the duration of their individual contracts?
or is it tax free for the PNG team forever?

Why ? You still have to pay him 1.8m over the next 18 months z
This is perfect for us . How could we have asked Latu to wait u til he’s 24 to take the starting half spot ? Seriously . Now he’s going to take over at 22/23 . Perfect age . This is a good thing . Romey won’t dog the club . The club now can build around an evolution , slowly giving more control to our young leaders like Temunator and Samuela , and make a seamless transition in the halves . Latu AD starting , Andruws off the bench.

Perhaps I should have been clearer ,..If Latu’s form warrants selection over Luai in the halves … than why wouldn’t you pick Latu? It won’t happen this year ..maybe next

Let’s just wait and see who ends up going there mate… I don’t see the Mays living over there ..but they might end up with Bula at Canterbury right?
Mays are supported by benji in all their vlogging and podcasting...i doubt gusbag and ciro would be the same.....btw when does the JL to chiefs vlog come out.

PNG
They will probably have a team full of good locals in 10 years with all that being money pumped into their juniors and systems

The 18 other clubs have taken money too to admit them..so bit of karma there perhaps …

We’ll see what happens with the Mays ….watching his pod ..he is always out and about ….loves eating in restaurants ..loves his food.. how many restaurants in the compound ?
Maybe mate, but the tax-free stuff also allows them to buy at lower rates...who knows what the Mays will do, but in general, PNG have a crazy advantage and they'll have a lot of pulling power for those 10 years.

Yeah ..no doubt ..maybe the NRL thinks there will be another $600m on the table when this first deal is up… they don’t get that if they are wooden spooners every year in the meantime

Blokes with a young family and tax free cash all living in the same compound? I reckon it's a bigger drawcard than was first thought. It would set you up for life.

The stupid thing is, the tax-free cash is for 10 years only, so good luck attracting anyone after that.

Sounded great at the time, but NRL has butt-pumped the other 18 clubs on this one.
Where are you getting the 10 years from?, no timeline was set as far as I can see, just that it would be tax free initially to help establish the roster. Could be 1 yr or 10 yrs. I could be wrong.

How old is this kid?

Nothing personal but we have been talkint about the juniors as our future for the last 15 years. Look where teddy and Moses are. Where pappy ended up. JAC.

We had Cooper Clarke in our systems and let him go
He’s 18/20 . Teddy debuted at 18 . Bula at 19/20. We now have the luxury to hold off and develop . So himself and Attard are genuine chances come 2028 at then 21 years old for the nrl spot. Attard is an Aus schoolboy year before last fullback , in a strong year . He has far more pedigree than Bula did coming through . More than Braithwaite the heir apparent at the roosters , and more than anything at 70% of most clubs .
If ever there was a time when we are lucky this is happening it is right now . 2028 was going to be a cluster . Now we can retain most of our core and if neccesary blood a fullback. Latu is an absolute gem . 18 months of getting his body right , and now real confirmation that the jersey is his in 2028 , means we can a will retain him . The Fainus and mays aren’t going anywhere . And I can’t see Turuva as well .
There is a bit of a vacuum at middle forward so 22-24 year olds who arnt in grade , so we might need to shop for depth. But by then hopefully kids like Duncombe , JTM and Lolohea as well as Havea jr are mainstays in the KOE team , and doing the job there . They will nearly to a man be around 21 .
The wrist cutting needs to stop . There was no way on earth Romey was ever staying for the 5 years . I personally thought 4 not 3 , but that’s ok .
If you’d have told me we’d get 3 years of Romey in 23 , before he went to PNG I’d have taken that in a heart beat . The 5 year deal at the time was scary to me . Now we are cheering .
This is a good thing . I’m convinced

If we re-sign the may brothers, turuva, and bula, i'm all in.

But history would suggest we lose them all.

Can I just say, Luai didn’t make the decision to sign with PNG over night. Obviously it is one he has been deliberating for a while. Whilst timing isn’t great, it’s a call be needed to make by the cut-off which he can’t control.

Otherwise, if he is contracted for next year, he couldn’t sign with them til November which might have compromised his deal.

Props to Luai for making this such a quick and easy process as opposed to dragging it out.

It will be interesting to see the press conference tomorrow. I think WT might have contributed to his departure and given their encouragement. Perhaps some re-signings are dependent on cap space and Luai leaving?

Wouldn’t surprise me if a mass re-signing of either the May’s or Fainu’s is announced in the near future.

I think the incentive coincides with the Australian government 10 year, $600 million support. It's been widely reported.

We'll see, what happens, maybe you're right and it is only one year...I have no government tax ruling for you if that's what you're asking for. None of this happens for another 2 years, but generally speaking, if you go overseas and become a tax resident of another country, you pay the local tax rate...PNG are offering a rate of 0%. Why would he be on the hook for Australian taxes? Do Warriors players pay Australian taxes?

The Chiefs will get charted flights to and from PNG and big Mal will have to go economy on 10 hour round trips every fortnight.

That is almost so true the Prime Minister will buy them a jet paint it on the outside The PNG Chiefs with the players faces on it ....Will be fully equipped with recovery rehab area private rooms with bunks for sleeping entertainment area the works and a coaching meeting room to run over tape

I agree with the sentiments of many on here that it does diminish the value of a lot of the “my team” rhetoric that Luai had been stating since he got here. It is a little disappointing that the playing group may not quite be as close as advertised.

However, from a purely team list perspective, I genuinely think this is the ideal situation. When we signed Luai we had to pay a premium to get him, 5 years at 1.2 million is well over his on field production. What we needed was a circuit breaker, a culture changer, something to get us moving in the right direction. In that regard he has been perfect and we only had to pay him the premium price for 3 years. His last two years were always going to be massive overpays in my opinion.

This could play out perfectly. It really is now up to HBG and Mielekamp to prove they are the leaders they demanded to be. I believe we have a great coach, a strong core and a huge amount of young talent. Need to lock them down and make sure they see the direction that Luai helped start.

I personally am optimistic this could turn out as a net positive.
