Heamasi Makasini #303

I’m a bit concerned that if Latu Fainu doesn’t start getting more time on the field he might decide to look somewhere where that might be an option.
I would like to see him given a couple of weeks in the 7 jumper so we could get a better idea of what he can or can’t bring to the team.
He might say his happy but every player wants to be in the starting side, as they should believe that they are a better option than those in front of them.
Maybe Benji doesnt want to see him in the 7 until he extends.

The kid has something.
Certainly not a first grader currently, but he is young and has the body and athleticism that can be built on.
Look forward to watching him grow over the coming seasons.
He's not far off being a genuine first grader. Once he has 30-40 games under his belt he'll be a force to be reckoned with. The game where he had his shocker it seemed the physicality and pressure was getting a bit much for him.

After seeing Payne Haas get manhandled in his first three games, then the next season he was instantly a weapon, I'll never write off a young gun with big wraps. At least not until they've had 3-4 seasons to develop.

Dont think Makasini was really prepared for the physicality of NRL..even though he was 108 kgs
and dominating at junior Rugby,
he was transparently manhandled by Wighton and Staggs ..two tough units btw ....plus others to a lesser extent
And heavily marked after the trial games where he showed his potential
Have no doubt he will be back with a reshaped body and do the same to others for the next decade
Freak athlete

Was also carrying a foot injury.. which was causing him significant discomfort and inconvenience… if 💯 fit I think we may all be in for a pleasant surprise

Yeah 100%, I’m not writing him off at all.
We as a club have a lot to do and it’s good he has committed to doing it here.

Successful cap management involves skill and luck. Firstly you try and assemble a quality spine. Than you get a couple of standout front rowers and at least one very good edge back rower. Than you throw some money at outstanding kids who have real potential. What cap you have left you throw at journeyman and kids coming through. Benji has managed to lock in are very solid core of players and hopefully a couple of kids are going to really surprise and make the big step to nrl
I know the convention is:
"Assemble a quality spine".

I kinda wonder. Look some halfbacks can be excellent in a bad team, Andrew Johns and DCE exemplify this. Others really struggle. So you buy a gun halfback for 1.2m, a decent 5/8 for 700k a fullback for 1m and a hooker for 700k. ... What we found is if you are still letting in 4 tries a game you will loose!

^remember your centers and pack are not sorted yet. Also your team is aging.

I say buy a good backline, 2x centers who have good defense and can cross the line, plus at least one winger who can tackle... Then hire a decent forward pack. With a team that is now setup so that it isn't "mission Impossible" for the halfback, someone like Sullivan could learn his craft.

Ahh thats good to know. I wasn’t aware of that

Think Macca signing is great work by the club and everyone involved , it’s been very good over the past 4 to 6 weeks or so with the May brothers staying on , Twally , AD , Bulla , just pleasing to see some real positive news coming out , no poor press , but the team even though under strength still needs to get winning again , we can’t slip any more games specially ones against lower teams like Dogs , eels , dragons , titans , we need to muscle up play as a unit like we were and just get on top , line speed for defence , deep kicks to corners plus a few bombs and grubbers , 40/20 attempts , really stir it up but turn them around , hurt in tackles , and run like you mean it , enjoy a good day today everyone I feel a win coming up

Yep 100% agree , Just make every tackle hurt,we need to play with more grunt quick line speed hard hitting.Hurt them in defence will open up our attack.

Benji’s biggest focus should be doing everything he can to win the next game …the season could go south in a hurry if they lose
No, we can't keep thinking quick solutions.

The whole double pumps work for a game or two, then they are gone.

Benji should be building skills that help us get a steady pattern of winning. Not quick fixes that will help us win the next game, but offer nothing in the future.

Things like "getting defense right" "sticking to a solid center/back line". Developing real structure vs quick touch footy tricks.
