Ashley Klein gambling Problems

he needs to let the game flow kinf od let teams stand off side all night and definently not make a penalty call to either team that decides the game, that would be a disaster for nrl

I actually wonder if regular personality, IQ, reference, drug and alcohol testing is done on refs. Do they still do background checks, police checks etc like we do for new hires?

So much has to go wrong usually for someone to be $400k in debt.

I assume refs get a new contract every year so there probably needs to be a stricter policy.

Lastly, I also wonder if NRL does terminate him somehow, would Klein have a case against NRL regarding unfair dismissal or even discrimination?

There are just so many layers to this that it warrants a much bigger discussion as the role of the refs in the NRL unlike any other sport is so gray. They dictate the 10m and the ruck speed. The team with the best ruck speed wins..
Considering the NRL at the time said ''nothing to see here" Id say hed have a huge case against them...though I wonder how much more we dont know

I have no reason to dispute the thing that he betted on horses etc and not NRL, however, if he lost $400k overall, my query is where was the betting taking place? How much TAB vs bookies? If bookies have their hooks into you favours are demanded.
Mate I think that you , like the majority of people who've posted on this are living in a world that hasn't existed for a couple of decades.

Corporate bookies don't offer credit, they don't collect debts or favours because the money has to be delivered up front. They're corporate entities that are no more likely to break legs than BHP.

The money Klein lost would've been his own to lose, whether he took it out of his mortgage, savings, inheritance, credit cards etc.

He would owe only his friends and family.

I actually feel sorry for the poor bugger. He has a disease.

How come the Kotoni Staggs hit on Ponga was not a send off? It was equally as bad. Staggs came in with force, and made no attempt to lower his tackling position, and Ponga wasn't really falling so there was no reason to hit him high.

It's stuff like this which make everything seem so questionable around Klein. Like my thinking is he didn't do it cause NSW were already getting their ass kicked and a send off would 100% result in a loss.

Don't have to worry about Qlders, not much happening up there

Its very different to say someone has lost $400k gambling in their lifetime vs being $400k in the hole at a point in time too.

People can say what they want, but there is no way in hell the decison vs cowboys a few years back for the escort wasnt influenced by external factors... no way!!

If you're asking work colleagues/friends for money to gamble, you are DEEP in addiction.

Foz turned his life around. He was deep in a gambling addiction. It is very difficult, but not impossible.
Sadly its not uncommon across the NRL and many other professional sports. Kids get large amounts of money and have plenty of time on their hands, especially in the offseason. Many of their mates have 9 - 5 jobs so they cant socialize with them except on weekends and after hours so they start punting on the pokies, online sports and online casinos out of boredom and get themselves in trouble.

It's not just a pro sports problem it's an Aussie culture problem we love to gamble.

Outside of drinking and gambling you need to have other healthy hobbies/interests. Which is why it's great TDM has a passion project of his on YouTube.

Agree, its a blight on society. It was somewhat less impactful back in the days of the Bookies and TAB when you had to actually physically be there to place a bet. Also when you had the one armed bandits, that would take coins and play was slow. Now you can bet as much as you want anytime and anywhere on your phones and the pokies will eat up your cash in no time and with little effort.

Need something to focus on. Could be why the NRL didnt dump him - could have sent him further down the spiral. Hasnt helped his refereeing though... then again, maybe he thinks he is doing a good thing by following the rules as they are written...

The problem is he believes that he is the man who writes them

My guess is the NRL did not dump on Klein because it may have opened a massive can of worms. When your continually negotiating your next broadcasting deal you can’t afford to have dirt flying around, lot easier to sweep it under the carpet.

I’m actually a little skeptical around the timing of this story from years ago being made public by a Nine owned newspaper right in the middle of those broadcast negotiations… just when its been leaked that things are not going well for Nine....

The sports segment on the 6pm news tonight was sponsored by a gambling company.
