Well I think gambling has become too easy. Look at WA, if you want to play the pokies you can only do so at the Casino.and it has the lowest gambling losses and problems in Australia.
That’s the way it used to be in NSW, you could only play the pokies at a licenced club.
Then Mr Paul Whelan , Police Minister, in cahoots with Bob Carr, the then Premier, thought it would good Labor Socialist policy that pokies be allowed in every pub as well. That made them very convenient to all and imo started the downhill run.
Of course then Whelan retired and guess what, bought about 5 pubs with a group of cronies.
They eventually sold for huge profits and he bought a major stud farm in the Hunter Valley. He’s dead now but that’s how it all started.
My idea;
- cease all gambling advertising
- revert to previous plan of pokies in clubs and / or casinos only
- make them available during decent hours only 12 noon - 10pm -
- limit amounts to be gambled
- remove ATMs from clubs
Chances of this happening. 0% because revenue to Govt is huge and would lead to closure of probably 60%of pubs.
What will happen. Life will go on from 10am - 4am every day, pensioners and unemployed will be there first thing to double their pensions, tradies will pour in at 3.30 to double their days pay, and then if they lose go him and give the wife/ kids a beating. The young punks will come flying in late evening/ early morning, betting the max., working the gamble button and go hard or go home.
It’s a real shame and I was part of it for quite a while until I had a frontal lobotomy and woke up to myself.
I still go to the races every Saturday but small bets only, mix with a normal group of older guys, we laugh, have a punt but all gamble within our limitations. We’ve all worked hard and now retired, we own our homes, cars, no credit card debt and a reasonably sane attitude.
