Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Geez PVL gets a bad rap. Sorry mods, but the game was on its knees during COVID. The NRL came up with the 6 again, its a bit annoying some of the calls, but the games is so much faster, created NRL W, has generated record crowds and ratings, got thw biggest TV deal ever, not sure what else he can do? Best administrator ever in my books

The first thing you point to in him getting it back on track are the 6 agains?

Don't think the club really needs a psychopath swearing at the players ever time they play poorly. Though it would be a complete contrast to Benji being everyone's mate
To be fair when your livelihood is on the line because players aren’t putting in would be hard to take emotionally. Carrying the load of a coach would be extremely tough especially when your team is losing. There’s no word on him being like that when being assistant.

Logistics are not a huge hurdle. Pvl has generated lots of money and is buying hotels and planes.

If we are playing the Dogs, Penrith Parra Souths and manly every 2 weeks it just dilutes the rivalries. Decreases value. Too much repetition and everyone gets bored.

We are not America.
Would be also interesting of what would happen to the player market as one conference significantly travels less

To think the NRL may assist ESL financially is a reflection of the turnaround in the fortunes of the product under Peter V'landys. He deserves praise for this definitely. Rugby league is entertainment these days so we have to adjust to the product. If the game can become a truly national and also international game (in the UK especially), Peter V'landys will be remembered as one of the great leaders of the NRL.

Any comp where 50% of the teams make the finals rewards mediocrity. If they get it out to a 20 team comp it should still stay as a top 8. PVL just trying to wring some more broadcasting cash out of the game.
We could aim for mediocrity by making the bottom 8. Seriously, it is a wake up call that the club must significantly increase resourcing to our juniors. The grass roots is where it counts in this expanded competition and we need to make the most of our advantage - large junior districts.

I actually have this idea of having a 20 team, 4 conference league.... 5 teams per conference, top 2 teams from each conference make the top 8...
As a Test cricket purist, it’s sad to have watched the monster that is 20/20 take over the game. 20/20 was designed to be faster, more exciting, highlight reel cricket. That’s the direction PVL is trying to take league in. If he stays in charge long enough, don’t be surprised to see him outlaw tackling. Not for safety reasons, but tackling will slow the game down too much. Players taking a ball carrier to the ground takes too long. Maybe we’ll be lucky, and defenders will be able to wrap their arms around the ball carrier and the ref will call held.

I'm unsure of the expansion to 20 teams but it seems logical in enabling 2 x divisions of 10 teams. One constant thing over the last decade or so is people saying the season is too long. The 10 team divisions should help reduce the length but i am worried about the depth of talent available. We already have the good teams awash with good players and depth. They're not going to surrender that, it will be the other teams loosing out.

The games talent pool bottoms out at 15-16 teams. 17 is pushing it. 18 will be too many. 19 is getting out of hand. 20+ is revenue raising and showing no regard for the quality of the product.

I stopped watching the game at that point.
