‘200 passes every day’

dont wanna be negative in seeing lots of errors with this tactic, i really hope it works....I hope our defense improves as well because the opposition have the ball half the time as well
Defence is mostly attitude so hopefully playing a more free flowing game will help the players stay engaged and focused during defense that being said I think alot more errors with the ball will happen this year but hopefully by 24,25 season the players get used to throwing the ball around

I certainly hope professional rugby league players on big money get used to throwing the ball around before and during 2023...
They aren't in preschool, their in preseason...

That's where Canberra, Sharks and Melbourne do better.

Defence, yes it is about attitude. It's also about position. Nofo + Center of this year get caught out in the open a lot. Naturally if the forwards do their jobs, they get caught out less and can keep their line. Yet clearly our backline defence was a gap for us. Heck we were letting people through the middle and that's attitude.

Melbourne praised Billy Slater in defence and the work he did there. This means it's about position and identifying gaps, ensuring you have a line.

Easts praised Josh Morris, that he was one of the best Centre's in the comp as he would position himself to match his winger and help them defend better. Morris at St George used to ask that he run against Jason Ryles and the forwards so that he would toughen up.

This is what worries me. You can't build trust in the people standing next to you easily. You need structure and familiarity with those around you.

Cam Smith controlled the pace of the game. If were just going to play Sheens AFL and not tackle defence then we get cricket scores instead of wins.

I Just hope I have the patience, because I can see a lot of dropped ball on the 4th tackle and hand overs killing us for a while before we see sweeping attack across the backs as the rabbits showed us when Reynolds was at his best
I feel like that’s what we have been doing for the last few years anyway, without the attacking part… we always dropped the ball whenever we were in a position to attack but handed it over before we started… hopefully we can hold on to a few this year after passing being drilled into them.

I read this article and Cried.

Sheens expects us to score an extra 8-16 points. Sure we *may* have that in us.

Yet we don't seem to be fixing defence. We cannot pass our way out of our soft as butter defence.

Instead of 200 passes we should be doing 200 tackles! Arrgh Cmon Sheens, coach some defence and not rollout the 2005 gameplan!

Teams are better and more professional now. Old tactics won't work.
I agree with the sentiment but our defense should be naturally better because we actually have some first graders in the forwards now. Like as if it’s some magic formula?

The personnel would make a massive difference. I remember at project management training and the guy who was an Agile coach said "who will do better - the team following waterfall but they are a better team or the team doing Agile ?". The answer is the waterfall team. Sometimes it's not the system but the actual players.

It all starts in the middle guys. If our forwards tighten that up then you don’t have guys from the outside coming in. We’ve got a more mobile forward back now so let’s see.
You can have a cracking forward pack and still get run over.
Witness Queensland in SOO 3 last year.
There has to exist a system as well as the talent.

The Bulldogs team that ran last a couple years back had the best completion rate in the comp, you need to value the footy but you also can't be afraid to throw it around. Last year's attack was pedestrian we can all agree on that, and it got us the spoon. Errors will come but so will points, I think we will finish the year strong after a bumpy start.

This attacking football theme, and the probable errors it may bring ,has to be expected. The facts are our defence was heartless,. This should improve with a far stronger , tougher and experienced forward pack ,and better coaches. But our attack was just as bad, hence passing drills, kicking and catching drills etc etc. If we want to be a top side, we need to be good in both. We have catching machines, passing coaching, a martial art guy teaching wrestling, and know doubt Sheens will have the guys doing many hrs on short kicking and goal kicking practise. It appears to be a far more professional approach compared to previous years. Just don't expect too much to early.

Even the fanatical trainer in Twal is enjoying training a lot more and talking gushing like of a "refreshing" environment, so if 200 passes a session helps with that and game day, great

Not expecting miracles under Sheens and co, at least in the short term, but absolutely certain that things have greatly improved since he took the reigns, with the signings of Papali'i and Koroisau just the beginning.

Everything points to the squad being much happier with the new approach to both training and playing styles, and I expect most of us will not only enjoy the style, but also improved performance as a result. Looking forward to it.

In season 2005, Wests Tigers only started their winning run to the semis in Round 16.
