2011 HALFBACK

How do you think Lote would go at fullback? He seems to enjoy roaming around chasing the action.

I'd leave Lote on the wing,
but I think he'd be an amazing fullback.

But as stated many times, we have McKinnon, Brown & even Moltzen & Mullaney to chose from.

Lote running and returning the football…. Awesome.

Lote under a high ball or bending down for a grubber.... Scary!

I really really like Moltzen at halfback, BUT….

The Roosters played unbelievable football last year and I really think it has to do with the fact they on tackle 5, they had 3 fantastic playmakers who could do anything from all 3 key areas (right, centre, left).

Moltzen could play as a playmaking role, similar to the, in my opinion, failed role of Hodgeson in 06/07\. We could have all 3 working on setting up playing in all area's, PLUS one of the best hookers in the league. I can't see why, in such a scenario, we could build some kind of attacking machine this year that could better Parra of 2001.

Anyone who thinks Rob Lui Won't or shouldn't be our 7 in 2011 Best go back and watch our last game!! Rob was a joy to watch as the season progressed and Benj and Robbie let him get his hands on the ball and do his Job, Lets not forget he had his fair share of time out of FG last year also. IMHO With the way our 6, 7 & 9 rotate somewhat during the game, I think Moltz would slot in perfectly off the bench, And should be used at 6,7 or 9 To rest Benj and the Robbies' Throughout the year. He is a big guy, And with a tad more filling out and defense work, I think he could also handle backrow easily… In saying that, for now... I'd like to see him in the Centres and push Ayshford to the wing (He is stronger than B.Ryan and just as if not faster... I remember him Keeping Carney off to score in The final). Everyone says put Moltz at 7 Making reference to the 09 winning streak, But from most of what I remember, He spent alot of time playing a little wider at 2nd Reciever and taking advantage of what Benj and Robbie opened up in front of him (regardless of the number on his back) Further proof he is best as a support player not an organiser. I think he will prove to be a SUPER SUB in time, I honestly think Brown was better at FB than Moltz... He has bigger stones!! Moltz is Big, Fast and Handy in a variety of spots, I would work toward having him on the bench with 3 forwards, And rotating him with Benj and the Robbies Keeping them all in the game and all reasonably fresh. But as for the arguement... Lui or Moltz, Lui HANDS DOWN!!!

I like this post - This is what I have been thinking for a while as well.

x2\. I recall Moltz was playing center when he started 1st grade, so the position isn't foreign to him. The backline would be so much stronger to have both Lui & Moltz in there and squeeze Beau back to the bench. Ayshford would probably be a better winger too than centre. He currently doesn't give his outside man much service.

Thats because Ayshford gets squeezed out wide by the time he receives the ball and his outside man is usually already marked. It frustrated me last year until I paid more attention to him and I would prefer he holds on to the pill rather than pass it to his outside man who is more than likely going to be taken over the chalk and lose possession.

Would you put Ayshford on the wing?
Personally I'd leave him @ center until he's ready for #13
He's been playing well there.

I don't think we'll see him on the wing, it will either be centre or backrow, and I don't think he's put on enough beef to handle the backrow yet either.

So Blake Ayshford is Chris H's heir for the 13 spot in a few years time?

and have we beyond a shadow of a doubt confirmed that Tim Moltzen wasn't injured and yesterdays thread was incorrect??

I agree w/ Willow…
Ayshford to stay @ center for the time being, but his future is defs in the back row.

& **Spartan117** I believe the Moltzen injury was confirmed to be false information & thread closed.

Lui at halfback and Moltzen at centre for me. I can't understand the logic of moving Ayshford to the forwards. We have ready made backrowers galore coming through. Heighno is around for a few years yet, so to put Blake in the forwards would be at the cost of someone like Dwyer. Thats ludicrous. I really like Ayshfords size at centre but to accomodate Lui and Moltzen in the one team I'd move Ayshford to wing. I think him and moltzen could really strike up a good pairing. AYshford would score plenty just finishing off Benji and Moltzens work.
Blake's future may well be in the forwards but I can't see that happening for 2 or 3 years yet.
With Moltzens injury I think he'll find it hard to oust Lui at halfback with Rob getting a head start in the 7.

I think you guys who are big Lui fans are over emphasing his last game, which was excellent. you dont have to go back to far to see a game which highlighted Lui's deficiencies, in the Canberra game, his options and execution were as they were for much of the front half of the year, frustrating.
Lui's basic skills are very weak, his kicking is no where near good enough and his left to right pass misses way to often. Couple that with his organisation and decision making, which often falls short. That said, Lui has loads of potential, but IMO, has along way to go.
Moltzen I believe is an excellent player and will do very well no matter where he plays. He's basic skills are far stronger, and allows us to play with more width, i think he also undoubtedly adds more zip around the ruck as well.

If Lui could tackle like Moltzen i'd probably have him picked as our number 7, and then have Moltzen playing a "Ben Barba/Craig Wing" impact player role off the bench.

However,

Lui's defense in my opinion is suspect. He's an arm grabber. He made one fantastic tackle in the roosters/tigers game in the semis where he showed Aubisson the sideline, and put him over it, however moments like that are few and far between.

We had this young centre once who was as fast as heck, could score tries, but couldn't tackle to save his life…. what was his name.... oh yes... Chris Lawrence.... he's now gone on to become one of the more solid defenders on our team, and still has that punch of speed. If Lui's defence can evolve (or HAS evolved over the off season hopefully) the same way Lawrences' did..... then watch out...

I think a lot of people forget Lui was still eligible to play in the Toyota Cup last season. Of course the learning curve was going to be a huge one for him but he made steady improvement as the season went and is sure to benefit from a good off-season.

Ever since the 2009 run I've loved Moltzen at half: I was all over the double threat of him and Farah alternating out of dummy half and running support for each other, keeping oppo packs on the back foot and always threatening to punch huge holes right through the ruck. The spaces that opens up for Benji are also mouth-watering. In fact, for most of the off-season I've been salivating about having Moltzen back and the attacking threat he poses.

Then over the last couple of weeks I've had a change of heart. Lui is clearly thought of as a gun by the club's powers that be - he ran the NYC finalists in 2009 and while he might not have stepped up as quickly as everyone would have hoped it's clearly considered his place to lose. And I'm starting to think that might not be a bad thing: much as I love watching the pure pace and running game Moltzen offers, there is no question we could also benefit from a technical player in the 7.

So my call is that we should start with Lui *but* there are a couple of areas to monitor closely:
1) Kicking game. There have been times where I've torn my hair out over Benji's kicks in play - it almost seems like it's such a prosaic part of the game that it's beneath his abilities. Cue a short kick straight to the oppo full-back. Farah seems to be good for a couple of 40/20s and a bunch of underhit crap. So there is clearly room for Lui to make himself the go-to for the fifth tackle kick.
2) Service. Given how sizeable our back row and centre options could be, we ought to be hurting teams more in fringe running than we sometimes do. One of Lui's obvious strengths is his service, and I think he needs to be getting the ball to fringe runners well enough that they can really smash the oppo line. That means he has to take risks, play flat and pass at the line himself - no Benji crabbing lines, let his passing do the talking.

I don't doubt Lui is better at both these facets of the game than Moltzen. But if he's not delivering on them I'll take the pace.

Anyone bangin on about Rob Luis' defence should also remember Timmy was a bit of a turnstyle whern he first turned out for us!! Plus Moltz played alot at FB where the tackles are a bit fewer than in the middle, and Lui was well targeted.. which doesn't help the old hit/miss ratio… I also remember a try saver he pulled off against Canberra was it??? I'm telling y'all, Get on Rob Lui... The force is strong with this one!!

Lui looked good at the back of last season, but I love Moltz, but I think young Miller might be better than both of them, his all round game combines the best of both players, organising, kicking and speed, what a problem mr Sheens.

Miller could be the buy of the season.

only way that happen is if both our halfs go down injured again,no way sheens plays another young half

Gentle chased miller after the under age state game, yet to see him play, but from I understand has potential. The scouting report i heard had only one negative aspect, and that was that he was let to learn the hard work ethic required to be a top liner, lot of seasoned pro's around the tigers that can teach him that.
