2012 Halfback Super-Thread

Why are we wasting our time talking about Carney - he wont be coming here!

Game, set, match it's not happening.

I agree Helmesy we are chasing only cleanskins which is good for the image of the club
But for that same reason I think Lui's in huge trouble and will take some special intervention from someone to save his career at the Tigers

In any case Yoss, I reckon only Bennett or Sheens would able to keep Carney on the straight and narrow. Sign him up for a single year deal and have a no grog & zero tolerance clause on it and breath test him at training. He messes up, instant dismissal and request with the NRL to deregister him so that stops him signing from any other clubs.

I reckon Miller is ready for a shot, but we shall see at the beginning of next season depend how the Lui case will play out.

Hey CB: If Sheens couldn't keep relatively mild mannered Lui in line- how is he going to control Carney, and I don't think our sponsers would be very impressed. However I do agree we should give Miller a go 😕

That's a fair assumption to make on the surface, but people are different and are influenced differently by those around them. By that logic, if Lui got sacked and went on to play for Easts, he would be less likely to get into the same trouble as Carney, but we know that's not necessarily going be the case as the party life is synonymous with Easts.

Because Lui is a nice bloke 99% of the time and then goes on to do what he is alleged to have done (twice might I add,) why does that instantaneously mean that Carney couldn't benefit from a mentor like Sheens purely on the basis that Lui didn't work out?

You are right there CB perhaps because of what took place last season with Lui someone should have kept a better eye on him this time (I know we can't babysit them all the time) but surely he must have had some councilling during the year - and I am not saying that Carney wouldn't benefit from Sheens' mentoring, but I don't think our sponsers would be happy - as they are not happy with this current "situation" 😕

If what I'm hearing is true Robert has played his last game with the tigers. I know that he has been offered counseling from the club in regards to violence and alcohol. I'm almost certain if the info I've attained is true that either Robbie will actually be released or believe it or not be given a contract extension. Sounds weird I know but us fans should know within the fortnight whats happening. I've made this sound more difficult then what it's meant to but Robbie won't be here next year or he will be signed till the end of 2014.

It depends on robbies attitude towards what's happened and actually whether he wants to play for us as well as follow up meetings being held with sponsors over the next week or so. My bet is he won't be in tigers colours next year. He wants out and has done for a while

From memory… When Daine Laurie had a similar problem he was hastily dismissed from the club before the court date and all (If I remember right??) I am assuming that if WT wanted Lui gone, A similar course of action would be applied (Considering the same guys are still running the team) The fact there has been no news, Leads me to the suspicion that WT still want to keep him around... If they didn't, I believe he would be gone already!!
Unless we can get an established half.. (Prince) I don't believe the Tigers would be willing to wait another 2 years to build a halves combination....
The WT time is now!! They have been building toward this moment and shedding dead wood for years for this time, Regardless of the situation... On one side of the coin they have to move on a lot of years of hard work and some security (For the next year at least) in the halves and possibly risk the next few years to rebuild it... OR Leave things as they are, Address Rob Luis' Issues, Work with him through them, Offer the required support and prepare for 2-3 years of world domination!!
I'm in no way trying to oversee the issues with what he has done.. Personally OR Professionally, The simple fact remains that none of us know what really happened, Or the events that lead to the altercation!! I am in a state of Limbo... I find it hard to believe these things happen because someone is simply bored. Obviously there are issues here and who knows how deep they run.
I can only hope the outcome is what's best for WT on and off the park....
But maybe I'm hoping for a bit much??

What happens if Lui is found not guilty though? Same situation as last time where the charges are dropped?

I don't think the club could legitimately remove him. Otherwise it would go against the court system.

I have a feeling this is what will happen. Either charges will be dropped or he will be found not guilty. Wests Tigers will more than likely sack him and he will conveniently sign with the Cowboys….

I think the Tigers/NRL will have a lower burden of proof, they are probably entitled to expunge his contract even if the courts are unable to find him guilty (which is different to being found innocent, maybe someone should mention this to brett stewart)

In addition, Misconduct does not necessarily have to be illegal.

Guess Im saying if the Tigers or NRL feel he has breached their contract (which includes behavioural clauses) they can sack him, even if he has not committed a crime.

Guys, this thread is about current and potential Halfbacks and what they offer to the Club in the future…

Comments relating Robert Lui and his up and coming Court Case will be deleted.

Out of all the halfbacks in the NRL (being reasonable, excluding Cronk & Thurston etc) if Miller doesnt step up for next year, I would LOVE Mitchell Pearce at the Tigers.

Pearce has his weaknesses but I think at the Tigers they would be compensated for. For example I dont think he is a very creative half, but with Farah & Benji, who cares. What he is great at is organising, good passing game, GREAT defence for a half (does everyone remember him on Thaiday in SOO) and a GREAT kicking game.

That and Jr Jr belongs at the Tigers.

It would be a good thing

Agree it would be a good thing. Why would he leave the Roosters? Also I think he would want too much coin we cannot afford players like Pearce, Prince and co. Have a look at our roster impossible to fit another star under the cap, we need to go with youth! Bring on Miller let him have first crack IMO!

Cant agree about Pearce as i think he is overated, but that is only my opinion, i think we will sign a half & also keep giving Miller a run in 1st grade.

Pearce will never play for the Tigers which is a shame as his game would complement Marshall and Farah's IMO.

Junior Junior doesn't want to be here, that's why he's at Easts.

I also don't want Pearce at the Tigers. I think he's highly overrated. Shows glimpses of brilliance, but is easily overwhelmed.

Mitchell Pearce is highly overated and you dont want him!
He is 22 years old (1 year older than Lui), already played origin, has almost 100 first grade games, hads already led his team to a GF.
He defends like a forward, has a much better kicking game than anything we currently have, he has a good passing game.
We dont have a hope in getting him in, but it is nice to dream

- Age: is just that. It's the one thing I can't take the mickey out of;
- Origin: Yeah he's played origin, but so has James McManus, Jason King, Anthony Quinn… You get my point. I'd have given Ben Hornby a run in the #7 before Pearce;
- Defense: Defends like a forward? Yeah, that's a prerequisite of a halfback! Pity he doesn't run like a forward;
- Kicking game: EVERY team in the NRL currently has a more consistent kicking game than us;
- Passing: Lui has a great knack at flighting the pass and putting the man through the hole. Nothing we haven't got there already...

It was my understanding Pearce didnt wanna come here as he thought it would be like leaning on his dads name to make his way.
He's made his own name at the Roosters, I dunno if ''he doesnt wanna be here'' or ''he'll never play here'' applies….he's better than Lui imo

In all seriousness, if we're not going to entertain Carney (which by all reports sounds like we won't,) just throw Miller the guernsey. He has talent, and he doesn't have to be the new Scott Prince from the outset. We carried a dis-interested Prince, Johnny Cronk and an at times out-of-form Lui, so why can't we afford Miller the same concessions. The kid has mongrel… A shot at FG with someone ready to go behind him (i.e Tim Smith,) will give him the motivation to prove himself at the top level.
