Not too fussed as I want our good crop of youngsters kept first and foremost. My best guess is that our financial situation is still very stretched and a big external signing will only occur when the gloom lifts and the incoming board give direction.
Call me optimistic, but I have the same feeling now as the mid eighties, when the quality crop of Balmain youngsters were coming through. Whilst they did not win a comp as they should have, they were there or thereabouts for a while.
Whilst they did sign a couple of big FIFO players during that period, for me the best signing was the unfashionable Mick Neal.
im very much on the same page as you on this; i think the whole buzzword of "marquee" should be thought of more along the same lines as the NFL and their "franchise player".
for the last few seasons now there has been a lot of hype surrounding the "young guns" coming through the lower grades, and the club has been fantastic in retaining them. we are right now on the precipice of seeing this great work bear fruit as in the coming years luke brooks, sironen, tedesco, nofo, simona, maybe brown (?) become their generation's pearce, elias, sironen, roach, jack….
funny you mentioned mick neal formerguest, as my dad was his coach one year when he was playing juniors (not sure where, maybe berala or somewhere in wests territory?). he said he was a great player, but a "little bugger" and he benched him once because he wasnt playing for the team! lol...
as for the facilities, well that is the case in any line of work. people are always going to be attracted to the better working environments, but in my experience i have worked in a few offices that weren't great and found that there is a type of camaraderie that builds with coworkers through these (relatively) adverse conditions. to this day three of those situations remain my best memories of relationships in the workplace i have had.
still. no excuse. get better facilities dammit!
