2015 Marquee signing announced

Anyone else feeling like a mushroom at the moment

Mayer leads everyone to believe we might have an external signing and we are just resigning our current marquee players

Surprised he didn't include Kidwell as a marquee signing as well

I hear you Happy. Hopefully he can hear us .

Not too fussed as I want our good crop of youngsters kept first and foremost. My best guess is that our financial situation is still very stretched and a big external signing will only occur when the gloom lifts and the incoming board give direction.

Call me optimistic, but I have the same feeling now as the mid eighties, when the quality crop of Balmain youngsters were coming through. Whilst they did not win a comp as they should have, they were there or thereabouts for a while.

Whilst they did sign a couple of big FIFO players during that period, for me the best signing was the unfashionable Mick Neal.

I get the feeling Mayer is trying to temper our expectations for 2015's squad. He knows we just came 2nd last, have a relatively inexperienced coach and ****house facilities and can quite rightly conclude that it'll be very difficult to get a Folau or SBW at the club. It MAY happen, but I think he wants to make sure that we dont think it WILL happen.

let's see what happens over this year, maybe we come in at 6th and conclude we just need a little more depth at 2nd row. Who knows??

im very much on the same page as you on this; i think the whole buzzword of "marquee" should be thought of more along the same lines as the NFL and their "franchise player".

for the last few seasons now there has been a lot of hype surrounding the "young guns" coming through the lower grades, and the club has been fantastic in retaining them. we are right now on the precipice of seeing this great work bear fruit as in the coming years luke brooks, sironen, tedesco, nofo, simona, maybe brown (?) become their generation's pearce, elias, sironen, roach, jack….

funny you mentioned mick neal formerguest, as my dad was his coach one year when he was playing juniors (not sure where, maybe berala or somewhere in wests territory?). he said he was a great player, but a "little bugger" and he benched him once because he wasnt playing for the team! lol...

as for the facilities, well that is the case in any line of work. people are always going to be attracted to the better working environments, but in my experience i have worked in a few offices that weren't great and found that there is a type of camaraderie that builds with coworkers through these (relatively) adverse conditions. to this day three of those situations remain my best memories of relationships in the workplace i have had.

still. no excuse. get better facilities dammit!

Relax. No single signing would turn us into a premiership contender alone, no-one. We had a club culture that outright sucked, accountability non-existent, all in all a foundation that was a shambles.

Woods is a cornerstone player, he is like a solid jab is to a boxer, unlikely to win a fight for you on its own but guaranteed to keep opponents honest and in range… a solid foundation.

We cannot buy a premiership, we dont have uncle Nick, or Rusty, but what we do have and to be honest are doing a good job at, is firing buck-shot through our own ranks, an above average nursery, retaining as much talent as we can to evaluate at the top level in order to create a new culture, one of loyalty.

It may not pay dividends overnight, but in order to make best value of an outsourced marquee signing, we need to develop a strong base or core, without it we would just be pissing bucks up the wall.

Grinds my gears when clubs (not just the tigers) announce resignings as signings. Signings imply new players in addition to what we already have!

Everyone really needs to settle down. He's not going to go out and promise that we will get a new marquee signing when 2014 hasn't even started. What if Tedesco becomes the next Billy Slater? Oh sorry can't resign you as I promised we would specifically get a marquee signing from another club.
What if nobody wants to come to the Tigers? We are favourites for wooden spoon and as Mayer pointed out, our training facilities are s***. Untill we start winning games I don't think too many players will be lining up for a contract.
So, as Mayer said, we are concentrating on retaining our talent (which everyone has been whinging about for years) and if there is space left in the salary cap we can go after other players on the open market.

Mayer should have been asked as to how much space does he expect to be available in the salary cap at the end of this year.

What is the definition of a marquee player anyway?

Just watched the Mayer interview and as always he impressed me. Great thoughts on memberships and running the club. As for players I look at our side now and I think that the only real weakness over the next few years is perhaps five eight and that depends on Moses and Austin. We have a great half coming through, I think tedesco this year will become a star player, wings are strong, Lawrence will come back, back row has plenty of potential, front row is the strongest it's ever been at wests tigers. Not sure what people want as a marquee - perhaps a back rower, but I see Sironen, Blair, Patterson, Fulton will be awesome

"Franchise player" has a very different meaning in the NFL to most sport and I don't think it reflects what you are trying to say. A player tagged with franchise status is a player that the team is preventing from going onto the free market. This is usually done when the team and player fail to come to terms on a contract, the team can then franchise that player and prevent them from joining another team. The player is well paid for that season, either at the average of the top 5 players in his position or 120% of his previous years contract.

Poor form on Mayers part …. Why not just be up front with the fans and tell it as it is. Rather than say something one day and another thing the next. Telling us Woods is our marquee signing for next season is a silly thing to say.

From where I sit you can have the best young talent in the world but if you don't mix them with some real class they will not reach their full potential.

What we don't know, is the cap full, are we cash strapped or are we happy with what we have?…

This team will not go to the next level without one or two standout players in key roles, we probably only need them for two years, but we do need them

Mayer knew all this when he made the comments about targeting a "marquee" player for 2015 with the Benji money

Now he has found that no one is interested we'll just announce a resigning as marquee signings

Potter is widely respected in the ESL that's not an excuse

If our training conditions aren't up to scratch that is his responsibility as well

When the Roosters finish way down the ladder they still attract top line players ,another excuse

If what you are saying is true Mayer needs to step up to the plate and be accountable ,fix the issues and make our club a place that every player wants to come to

If not he is just as bad as Humpty ,Noyce and every other gumbie we have had as CEO

I'm not asking for this to happen overnight , but if a possible signing can see change is being made that will make them think twice as the Tigers as a viable option for their future

The thing is if we can't get a new marquee signing without busting the bank why bother. I'd rather see smart signings than a big name who might not live up to expectations.

I agree , a smart signing would be a marquee signing for the club

The issue will be is that we are going to probably pay overs to get the right players

If you were an up and coming or an established player NRL player would you be attracted to sign with a club who just finished 15th ,has had major financial issues ,new coach for the same money that you could get playing at for example Roosters ,Manly ,Souths or NQ ??

What's happening with all the money we have freed up from Benji leaving then?
As well as the increase in salary cap.
Surely we have room to sign someone significant from elsewhere.

The Chooks had some real young talent and they bolstered them with Maloney,SBW and Jennings and won the title

Yup - a great balance between the two … And purchased in the areas they were lacking.
