2019 Coaching saga -Thread

A bike rider in india has a vehicle pull out from his path. He comes of his bike.
He is ok and so is the other vehicle. But his bike hits a local traders shop, destroying his milk, his cow, all his wears and his business is ruined.

The Wests Tigers feel like that trader. How did we get into this mess?

That being said:
We upgrade Ivan for Wayne Bennett.
We keep Brooks, ok Nathan is better but no Origin dramas.
This may not be the worst thing to happen here. Particularly if we do a deal to release Cleary for 2020, Wayne sees out 2019 at Brisbane then comes here. Darius Boyd is too old to come and play and we get access to Brisbane Juniors.

Cleary has to go asap. He can't be around for pre-season.

I'd like Bennett, but if he isn't on board for 2019 then someone else needs to be.

Management of the Panthers are liars.

He was let go " because he looked tired" = wasnt getting results and added to that… When replaced

Gould said that the incoming coach had a proven track record of nuturing juniors.
\

Lies lies lies...

This is all part of a ploy to keep the Jnr

Snr would be wise to the fact that any contract would be coupled with a full pay out clause.

$$$$$$$ in the Cleary bank

And a certain Mr Gus said the day after shafting Griffin that he'd had 12 approaches overnight from coaches wanting to be considered for the coaching gig.

As if ??!!

We are being played a treat!!

And the infuential Mr Gus is orchestrating the media big time!

Gus can only play us because he is being allowed to by Ivan the terrible. Make no mistake Ivan the terrible is much worse than Gus in this whole thing. If he had any integrity this would have been shut down from day one. I don’t care if we get compo or not, if we can get Macguire or Bennett than Ivan needs to go asap.

Geez, some of you think that Ivan is going to a weaker club and will struggle?

He’s not going to Penrith in 2 years time or earlier just to coach his son. He’s going to coach a powerhouse club. He wants a premiership just as much as his son and he knows he has a better chance at Penrith.

I'm really curious to understand this new idea of Penrith being a "powerhouse" club. They've made the finals 8/19 times since 2000 (42%), won 1 premiership and collected 2 wooden spoons.

They've now made the finals 3 years in a row and were knocked out in the semis - decent results, but hardly powerhouse and in my opinion they regularly fail to impress in the big finals matches. In fact their finals record is 8/17 = 47%. Panthers continue to be run-over by the real premiership contenders.

Sure the Panthers leagues club have lots of money and they've built their COE (a few years ahead of other clubs, but some half-dozen clubs have COEs to be completed within the next few years), but frankly I am not seeing powerhouse results, nor is their long-term coaching strategy solid and locked-in. If Nathan Cleary's form drops at all, they are in big trouble IMO.

You can make an argument for juniors, but it's been shown that you can very easily sign juniors from other clubs, so it's not as if they have the monopoly on Western Sydney. Then you look at Penrith's recruitment strategy, letting go guys like Wade Graham, Luke Lewis, Flash Gordon, Jennings bros, Blake Austin, Api Koroisau, Moylan etc. who have gone on to have quite fine careers at other clubs - very literally they've seeded the Sharks premiership tilts of the last few seasons. It's hardly a powerhouse recruitment strategy either.

Silly me.
I was comparing Penrith to the Wests Tigers. In that comparison they are a powerhouse and not too many would disagree.

I still cannot understand the hysteria on here because Ivan is leaving when his contract is finished in 2 years time..

That is all that we have to go on at the moment, nothing more nothing less, the rest is speculation and emotions running high..

So what if Ivan coaches the Panthers in 2021,as long as he professionally coaches the team and continues his great work that he has done so far at this club until his contract is up,is all we can ask….calling him names and the like wont really make a difference if he is still here and doing a good job..

This is the world of NRL,a high career changing business, one day your the best player since Dally Messenger, the next your out with a career ending injury...
One day your the best coach to have ever graced the football park...next your sacked because of a number of reasons if any...

Contractual agreements are like toilet paper and what its used for these days....Money speaks volumes more ….

If Ivan goes next year or is released, sobeit,I wont lose sleep over it...there will be another coach employed to take his place and the carnival keeps going and going and going...

Welcome to the world of rugby league as we know it today....theres always a story...

Well said. Why people are still so emotionally invested in what happens baffles me. 2019 is looking pretty grim regardless of who is coaching.

I agree. The good thing is that if we are performing badly, his reputation will take an even bigger hit as it's going to be perceived that he isn't giving 100%.

Anything less than the finals will see Ivan slammed by the media.

I'm hoping we see him continue on for 2019 and then have Bennett take the reins after that. But announced well before the seasons starts.

We can keep the current players happy that signed with WT for cleary, but also start to attract new talent with Bennett on the way.

Last thing these players need is an excuse …........

When it gets tough in a game they roll over because they know everyone will blame Ivan and not them

Simply put TT but remember a number of players have already said that they would find it awkward if their coach had already signed with another club in two years time.

Imagine if a player makes a remark of “here comes the next Penrith coach” during the preseason. IC gets upset and disciplines said player. My guess is the other players will get mighty upset about it and IC will have certainly lost the dressing room.

If IC has signed with Penrith for 2021 then it really is an impossible position for the club.

Also, no matter what Penrith say publicly, privately they wouldn’t want to wait two years for their next contracted coach.

What's also bizarre is the idea that I.C all of a sudden figures out he wants to coach his son, 18 months after taking on a major role with the Tigers. Did he not have any inclination to coach N.C before this? Maybe he did but N.C spoiled those plans when he re-upped with Penrith?

And bizarre x 3 is that Ivan is (reportedly) going back to a club that sacked him!! That I don't understand. Must be more to this than meets the eye..

That was well known for most of the time he has been here it’s not “All of a sudden”.
Hence all the posts that wanted Nathan to come here,, and quite a lot of those were wishing that he would jump ship and join us straight away, ironically the same thing that we find so distasteful when it’s being done to us. It wasn’t a secret that he wanted to coach Nathan at some time,

Hear what your saying and agree that player loyalty is well dead.
But a player looking for a better contract is a totally different thing to a coach/manager. They have totally different roles and significance to their team, culture and players.

Happy for someone to correct me, but I can't recall ever hearing about a coach (in a competitive league) that has signed elsewhere for 2 -3 years later. And there's a reason why it never happens; coach loyalty simply can never be in question.

I agree. These stories about coaches facing the axe etc are generated by anxious journalists who are so obseed with pubiishing a story no matter how untrue or factual. If they don't publish these stories they are more likely to face the axe than NRL coaches are to face the axe from their club.

I am a betting man and I would say that Ivan Cleary is at least a 95% chance of coaching the West tigers in 2019 and 2020\. Time for everybody to look for another shocking revelation from the journos.

I accept your opinion on this cq,however, the big BUT is..Ivan only signed a 3 year contract initially, the players must have had an inkling that Ivan has a choice to stay or go after that 3 year period..it is a business of short term contracts mostly, even considering Bellamy at the Storm has been given extention after extention in his favour no doubt..

If any player makes an absolute childish and immature comment such as you have stated, then they should go and find another sport…they are supposed to be professionals on huge money and should know the situations that can arise...

Players don't need excuses not to perform or go the extra mile

Keeping Cleary does exactly that

So what if Ivan coaches the Panthers in 2021,

All i can say is if you take the time to try and understand why almost the entire rugby league community are saying Ivans position is untenable you might also start to understand why Wests Tigers fans who have been through hell and back for the last few years have a massive problem with this.

This is not much different to the Jason taylor situation where most could see he didnt have what it takes to be an NRL coach but certain personality types were happy to keep the status quo and ride it out.

Its all semantics anyhow, Justin Pascoe and the board will not let Ivan run this club while his priorities are elsewhere. Just will not happen!

He is gone. its just a matter of the details.
