2019 Coaching saga -Thread

So our recruitment has been to flag interest in a couple of the biggest names, and sign the last man standing after others have picked?

Would prefer Demetriou or O’Brien to Madge

I’d prefer to get Demetriou, but not sure what Coaching here could do for his coaching record, unless he’s even way better that I think he is,

No matter though who comes here , they’ll still be anchored by some of the plodders that we have

If we were going to sign Bennett for 1 million a season but we got Madge at $700, and Cleary was on $400.
Does that mean we can still afford to keep Cleary as a hostage in a basement at Concord ?

Hope so

Until the end of 2020

Not sure if we could afford to feed him anything except bread and water.

if it happens, he’s going to have a spak ,
attack when he sees what he’s got.
And he’s only got 2spots left to fill.
It would at least mean that Gold Bar Benny will have dodged a bullet.

He might a clause in his contract that says he can punt any dead wood in the team….

To get rid of what should go , if they’ve got contracts then we have to find
Someone who will take them.
Even Reynolds who used to be a reasonable, player, would struggle to find someone to take him off our hands, especially now with an injury risk,

I think Demetriou could be a smokey for the job if Maguire holds off signing. With Siebold assured of the Broncos job and Wayne moving on probably to Souths it leaves JD out in the cold. I doubt he would want to stay under Bennett at Souths and would be looking at moving up to head coach. I think he would have as much pull as Bennett with the players and juniors at the Broncs and may attract some of the younger brigade here.

I’d bet on JD being the assistant to Wayne at Souths as Furner is going to The ESL.

Could someone please clarify for me? If Cleary doesn't ask for release and we offload him anyway, we will have to pay both he and future coach?
So we are basically waiting for him to seek a release (forcing Penrith's hand) and hopefully try to get compensation also. Am I right? If not could someone explain it to me correctly please

That'll be enough to keep him going

My guess is IC will happily go without a payout or without officially asking for a release to try and keep his reputation intact

Getting compensation for letting him have what he wants may be near impossible as him and panthers I'm guessing will be playing the waiting game hoping for WT ta say they can have him as it's untenable to have him here

Hopefully we get the best outcome possible

You are right… But the general consensus is that IC has asked for a release via his agent. It has not been played out in public which speaks volumes for WT management.

Going to be an interesting 1st session with Madge and all the kiwis that quit international football with him as coach

Des back to Manly was a real shock I would have bet anyone that would not happen but it just goes to show we don't know much really , we have Madge , Bennett , Seibolt , Taylor , Toovey , Walters , all looking for a coaching job , I left CLEARY out as I think he is as good as gone , who we get I have no idea at all but once the first club come out and states we have signed X then it will all fall into place , Bennett could be a real chance hear early if Broncos secure Souths Coach but Madge could be the man for us as I think Bennett would be over the top $$$ for us

Wests Ashfield have posted a huge $$$poker machine profit, part of which could be siphoned to pay for Wayne.

We keep hearing about the money that WA has ,
Wheres it been this year it been hiding this year

What do you want them to spend it on? They can't provide TPAs because they own the joint - you can only spend up to the cap on players, so they can't pay over that to attract anyone. I really can't think what you want them to spend their money on.

Part of my point actually , it wasn’t me that said that money should have
Been siphoned off to Bennett, but my main point is , what did we spend ( legally I mean) all this money on.
They’ve got to get smarter , instead of paying overs to players,

Get more visible at state carnivals, etc and build up a presence with the players from an early age,
I’ve been around those sort of things for years, and while there’s always people from the top clubs buzzing around,
I’ve only seen someone from here on a few occasions.
Use some of this windfall on some decent spotters for the club!!”
Manly have just brought back one of the two best development officers that I’ve ever seen in the game
Noel Cleal should never been out of Manly’s sight, and he will be sure to be off, searching for the same kids that we should be, all around the eastern States,
I wish we had someone like him here ,and not the invisible people that we have, ( if we have any)

What general consensus is that?

Tigers come to terms with Maguire on three-year, $2.5 million deal
By Adrian Proszenko 25 October 2018 — 6:02pm
Wests Tigers have come to terms with Michael Maguire on a three-year, $2.5 million deal that will come into effect once the club resolves its standoff with Ivan Cleary.

The Tigers have been inundated with expressions of interest once it emerged Cleary was eyeing a return to the foot of the mountains, but only Maguire and Wayne Bennett were considered. Bennett is poised to join South Sydney in a coach swap for Anthony Seibold, paving the way for Maguire to join the joint-venture outfit.

Tigers officials believe Maguire is a better long-term proposition than Bennett, who wouldn’t have been considered for a deal any longer than two seasons. Given the constant changing of clipboard holders at the club – Cleary will be the latest to move on in quick succession following the departures of Jason Taylor, Mick Potter and Tim Sheens – the Tigers hierarchy was keen to lock in a big-name coach for an extended period to provide stability.

Maguire’s first preference was the Brisbane job that will be vacated by Bennett at the end of 2019 and he was one of four candidates interviewed for the position. However, the plum role will go to South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold in what is likely to be a straight swap with Bennett.

Maguire and Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe thrashed out most of the details of the deal when the pair recently met in New Zealand before their respective overseas commitments. They have been in regular dialogue since and the parties have agreed to terms, although it’s understood a contract is yet to be officially signed.

The next step for the Tigers hierarchy is to bring the Cleary situation to a head before the first group of players are due to return to preseason training from November 7\. Cleary is contracted to the joint-venture outfit for the next two seasons, but has agreed to return to the foot of the mountains from 2021-2023\. That move makes it almost untenable to remain at Concord, although it’s understood Cleary hasn’t as yet asked for an early release.

Cleary has made no secret of his desire to reunite with his son, Panthers halfback Nathan, and will get the chance to do so immediately if the parties can come to an arrangement.

The Tigers are seeking compensation from Penrith in return for allowing Cleary to go immediately. Cameron Ciraldo, who stepped in as caretaker after Anthony Griffin was sacked with more than two years remaining on his deal, will remain in charge of the side until the situation is resolved.

Although he has been out of the NRL coaching caper for a year, Maguire’s stocks are on the rise. The premiership-winning coach is overseeing the New Zealand team that upset Australia a fortnight ago and is looking to add another big international scalp when the Kiwis take on England this weekend.

Tigers star Benji Marshall said he would have no problems playing under Maguire after the pair struck up a relationship discussing future plans for the Kiwis.

“I caught up with him four or five times at the back end of the season,” Marshall said last week.

“I spent a few dinners with him and a few coffees as well and got on with him really well.

“I’ve never been coached by Madge and I don’t know how that would be but he’s had success in the past.”

Disappointed about Bennett, but that was really only ever going to be a short term arrangement if it had come to fruition. Madge hopefully coaches us for a decade. Good pick up. Credit to Pascoe.

Sums up my thoughts perfectly.
