2023 Expectations

More like a realist…. We just don’t and won’t have the cattle next year to be a good team
I think that's a realistic expectation tigerap.
I realise some fans are looking toward a GF win. It's easy to get your expectations up, fueled by hope, like I did at the beginning of this year, hoping they would get a finals appearance.
I'm leaning toward a 10th to 14th finish, but with a caveat on player turnover. It's not a good sign when our stand out players keep leaving. We don't seem to be able retain our best each season and add other good players to help them be even better. This year it looks like JO and Douehi will be lost.

I disagree with this comment. The problem is the fans are all over the place. Stop the leaks but we want more information. They should shut their mouths but they should speak up.

It's a case of you can't win. When you are in this situation it's basically impossible to win.

A good example was one poster on here had a go at Lee for opening his mouth over a comment in the media that Lee spoke to Sheens about that loss. Just to be clear Lee didn't say anything. It was just reported he spoke to Sheens about the loss. It's crazy.
Fair enough and I agree fans are all over the place. I think when something is said it should be for good reason and not fluff. I’m critical of when something is said that embarrasses the club and offers nothing. I’m all for communication that shows leadership and steadies the ship and that’s what I’d like to see more of next year.

Media strategies by top clubs like Melbourne very rarely look stupid because either they get their man or there is real purpose in whom they seek and it's hardly ever played out like they're desperate.
The Muster saga for instance. Even if they miss out they will find a way not to look like a shambles.

Media will ridicule us until we win. It would be sadder if they just ignored us.
They will once we start winning, you know they always focus on bad news.
Also I was just reading an article that Dragons are the new Tigers, should be an absorbing clash tomorrow between 2 basket case clubs !

But guess what Steve, if you go back in time you will find that Parra,South’s and Penrith all went through many years of mediocrity before they go their act together.
It’s happened before and you can get out of it. At least that’s what I’m hoping !

"It's impossible to win" the leaders at this Club have proven its impossible for them to oversee winning.
Theyre an embarrassment and none of our Admin should still be in charge. Madge went, the whole lot of them should. They're incapable of fixing THEIR MESS.

What to expect 2023 ?
If Tims expectation is anything less than top 8 he should resign now you can't start year expecting to fail !
BUT we need 1st grade roster and I feel we have about 14 who are at that level we can't make up half our roster with promising developmental juniors that's too much so we need 2 class backline recruits and 2 class edge forward
Recruits .
If not bottom 4 again and fans will run out of patience

Do you remember late 60's we had a 2nd Division and decision was made that top 2 teams would get promoted to 1st division and Wentworthville won the comp but Parra objected so 2nd place Penrith and 3rd place Cronulla got promoted .Wenty got dudded . A bit like Manly dudding the Bears

I do remember that, I think 1967. Yes, it’s very similar to the Bears.
My point was that many teams have gone through lean periods before the light comes on, at all levels of the club.

My 13 for 2023 as it stands...

1. Laurie
2. Nofoaluma
3. Naden
4. To'a
5. Maumalo
6. Doueihi
7. Brooks
8. Utoikamanu
9. Koroisua
10. Ofahengaue
11. Papali'i
12. Blore
13. Hastings

I see the two weakest positions are Toa at centre (although I like him it would be nice to get a strike centre and Toa can be backup) and Blore who could be great but is an unknown (I think he will be good off the bench and in the middle).

Obviously, if we snag a few more signings that may change things. ie. a top 5/8th would push Douehi into the centres which fixes the issue we have there. Liam Martin or Bateman would solve the number 12 issue. We would also need a good prop rotation. Someone like Andrew Fifita would do a job for us off the bench on a one-year deal, but ideally, we find a big bopper to partner Stef in the front row with solid impact off the bench.

Will be an interesting year.

Totally agree with your 13 as you say based on things as they stand today
Also agree with your view a top class center and a top class edge back rower would really make it. Of course this assumes no long term injuries so we need more depth. Nu Brown is one of the bench maybe Musgrove

Good post. I’d certainly feel more confident if that was the team we were putting out this Sunday.
Some youth and experience, playmakers, kickers and runners. Even defence would be stronger.
Oh well, only a few months until we see what happens.

Our squad isn't good enough to win regularly without getting extremely lucky in relation to these two factors.

I still think the club has managed expectations poorly because they've blamed the previous 4 poor years as being Madge's fault with the inference that the new coaching team will turn things around.

It also doesn't sound like there are any good signings available.
Remember when Lee A did a review into Madge?

People are critical of Pascoe and Lee, I am not but that Review I am. It seemed that Lee took 24 hours, looked at some paperwork and said Madge is safe.

Yes we can't keep blaming Madge. Particularly we need to address why high performers come to wests tigers and lower their performance instead of raising it.
Seriously:
Reynolds, Packer, Mats, Tamou, Roberts, BJ.

These were all premium signings. I get it if one or two did not perform. I also get them under-performing when we have paid overs. Every one of those players above should have been starting in first grade every week, Every one! The only name I know that was a premium signing and actually was selected each week was Mbye (I expected him to crash and burn, Why why why... In fairness Mbye actually performed better then I expected..).

Particularly James Tamou, you may not agree with every name above but James Tamou has been in the Grand finals for 2 clubs. He was the experienced player that built the Penrith forward pack. This should have been the signing that builds our front row, instead FLAT.

^That's a WT problem. We need to identify why this has happened and what we need to change to correct this. I was hoping Nathan Cayless would have helped. A tackling coach is a good start.

no expectations. all I hope is we have a better run with injuries and referees and our youngsters start to get some experience under their belts. 2024 and beyond is when it starts heating up.

I also now find it difficult to have any expectations. During 2020 we were talking about a 5 year turnaround. We’re now 3 years into that 5, and we’re now looking at another 3 years? That will be Benji’s first year as head coach, if he lasts that long.

I'd like to see the side become a flamboyant attacking team again, and for the players we have to improve instead of going backwards. When Madge was hired I feared that we'd play the same boring brand of footy that Souths played before sacking him, and we did. And the players went backwards, or kept repeating the same mistakes.

If we are going to be beaten by the favoured teams, the least we can do is be fun to watch, and stretch the skillsets of the players so they can improve. Our runners need to work on their speed too.

It looks like Todd Payton's pre-season methods worked on the Cows, so maybe Sheensy can try something like it?

Good point. Nu Brown on the bench would cover hooker and lock. As for the other three benchies: Maybe Musgrove, Twal? Pole? Dias? ...I think we need to recruit at least one more impact player off the bench.
