2025 Assistant Coach Options

Whoever they choose can’t have ambitions of being a head coach. Ideally a former head coach who is happy to take a back seat and guide and direct (but not be a threat).

I like Hook. No nonsense and good with junior pathways

Wonder what Michael Hagan is up to?

This is the first time I have ever seen fans of an NRL team having such an interest in who the assistant coaches are …

It probably says a lot about the confidence levels with the current head coach …

Just remember…it’s a double edged sword … the better the assistant coach … the more the fans want him promoted to the top job when the inevitable next series of losses happens
This is EXACTLY why I think Griffin is perfect. His time as a 1st team head coach is pretty much past him. He's not a threat to Benji, while offering experience at not only 1st grade coaching, but player development (Panthers & Broncos roles) & also brought through the Wayne Bennett coaching ranks (Benji's mentor in some ways).

Gordon Tallis loves Hook. Says he was the guy that was responsible for the development of Broncos juniors in his time there.

is this even something that interests him though? Or just more board scuttlebutt?

Yeah, I'm on the phone to Hook now- keen as mustard.

How the Hell would I know? :D

But, he's not working in the NRL right now- I'd at least see if there is interest.

Stephen Kearney wouldn't be a terrible assistant for Benji either.

He hasn’t worked for a few years now in coaching … and I see this week he is currently assisting Western Bears putting together their expansion bid…

I just thought with the enthusiasm you were expressing there may have been more to it..

He'd be a great pick up for the Bears...

I'm always enthusiastic. No point supporting a football club & being morose about it IMO!

We suck. But, it's easier for us to get better than worse at this point.

I don't mind Stephen Kearney as an option. Been through the Broncos & Storm coaching tree.

Benji is clearly the good cop with the kids, probably needs a really ruthless trainer to play bad cop and deliver some home truths & for everyone to get the shits at.
That makes perfect logic to me.
I would imagine the young ones would respond to hard training better than the old farts.
We need that Bad Cop guy to get us up and running over the off season.
The lowest players are on over $3000 a week to do what they love; with a ceiling upwards of $20,000 per week----- 52 weeks of the year. That's not chicken feed!
Pull the finger out guys, that's very good money. But you must earn it.

Joe O’Callaghan

-Rabbits assistant coach & Cup coach
-Coached NSW Cup premiership last season, not do good this year with decimated roster.
-Recruited to Rabbits in 2019 from Qld Cup by one Shane Richardson
-Reportedly not part of the Bennett 2025 regime

2023: Rabbitohs NSW Cup Coach and Head of Elite Pathways and Development, Joe O'Callaghan, will move into a full-time coaching role as an NRL Assistant Coach as well as maintaining the role as NSW Cup Coach where he won the Rabbitohs' 21st NSW Cup premiership this season.

Throwing into the mix.

I would question any experienced coach getting a say with Benji . I look at John Morris he had great success with the Sharks and we got him from Rabbits , so why could he not get them firing unless it was Benjis way. I think we need a more senior assistant that could impart their knowledge with full backing from Richo

Pretty sure Hagan is an assistant coach to Meninga

Benji has shown his hand when it comes to recruiting assistants. Mateship over results would be great if it worked. I personally would not be surprised to see Dora back on the books.
