2DAY FM prank call

@stryker said:
My thoughts are that this incident is the result of society's de-evolution with regards to what is deemed a news worthy entity.

By this I mean look at what the western world sees as important events….Taylor Swift's romances, Hollywood starlets drug and alcohol problems, Reality tv 'stars', touring boy bands......Kate Middleton being pregnant.

We are bombarded with this crap on a daily basis to the point that our news has become saturated with entertainment gossip. We are fed snippets of how world economies are operating in a 60 second market wrap and then are subjected to a 10 minute segment on which contestant got booted off dancing with the stars complete with interviews. They briefly mention the unrest in Egypt in a bulletin and then follow that with an indepth analysis of fashion week. They again breifly mention the tensions in the gulf followed by a panel discussing what sex Kate Middleton's baby will be.

It is pathetic.

The prank last week was poorly executed yet succeeded by fluke beyond even the hosts expectations. The nurse stuffed up and if she broke protocols then should have copped her kick up the arse and moved on. What eventuated however was the worlds "news" departments went into overdrive and the story headlined all coverage for an entire week. It wasnt that serious and even Prince Charles saw it as typical Aussie larakinism. I do feel for the nurse because she knew damned well that in England she would be outed and harrased by a relentless media fueling the publics thirst for ridiculous gossip. She would become a mini celebrity for having a lax in judgement and being fooled by a silly prank call. It was a huge story over nothing. In the end, possibly in her desperation she has taken the ultimate escape route. That is truly tragic if it is the reason for this action.

I dont blame the nurse, I dont blame the Royals, I dont blame the pranksters. I blame the worlds media and to an even greater extent I blame the mindless sheep of the world who thirst for this information on celebrities. I blame presenters such as those on the morning shows who ignore real news for this populist BS. Those that crave entertainment gossip and make people like Kardashian a star....these are the people that the media was catering to when making such a fuss over a womans pregnancy. The same selection of society who drive other celebrities to their ends through relentless gossip. I absolutely despise people like this and to me they have blood on their hands once again.

Extremely well said and I agree with all of it.

No matter what anyone looks at this little story, it's just really sad that 2 children lost their mother and someone felt that taking their life was their only choice. May she rest in leave.

The prank was simply that, a prank… **The UK Press is very unforgiving and the pressure from the local media/papparazi would most likely of been the reason this lady felt this was her only option.** I dont feel the 2Day Hosts are responsible, but now will surely wear a big burden of this scenario.

Either way, its a very sad story now and you have to feel for the family of the lady.

Yes this is the problem. People and the media carry on like the royals are God or something and are therefore untouchable, when they are actually just flesh and blood like the rest of us. When someone makes a mistake that concerns a member of the royal family, they are crucified - it's bloody ridiculous and a very sad indictment on society as a whole. I really hate the idolatry and worship of man.

Yes Flippedy what fools we are. Seems nothing has changed since the bible days .

Peter Fitzsimons

It is a tragedy of unspeakable proportions that the nurse who put the prank call through to Princess Kate's ward should have taken her life. Just as it is an enormous tragedy when anyone takes their life.

But to all those - particularly the British media - who are firing vicious epithets at the two radio DJs who are the public face of that prank call, blaming them for the tragedy, please get a grip.

What, precisely, are they guilty of?

Making a prank call? Which DJ in the history of the world hasn't made prank calls? It is part of the genre, a practice beloved through the generations and around the world, including all over Britain.
\
\
Was there malice in this call, then? Please point it out. Please show us a shred of evidence that anywhere in the process of putting the call through, there might have been a mite of malice that it would genuinely hurt someone?

Perhaps then, they were guilty of criminal negligence, or even mere negligence.

Really? The test of negligence, as I remember from my garden-variety legal studies, was whether or not a ''reasonable man'' might have had any expectation that their actions would have resulted in the kind of tragedy we have seen.

I invite you to be the judge. Who could possibly have thought that a silly prank call like that - one of thousands of prank calls, no doubt, made by radio stations around the world on that day - would have led to the young woman taking her life? Can anyone point to a precedent where such an innocent call has resulted in such shocking consequences? I can't.

And for those who still make the case that the radio pair are guilty of a terrible crime, I point to the cheery reaction of Prince Charles himself, shortly after he was apprised of the call. Did he not, quite appropriately, have a little fun with it, on Thursday, when he asked the waiting media: ''How do you know I'm not a radio station?'' Mirth all around, led by the journalists.

For Charles appreciated the bleeding obvious. The call was simply irreverent. Not malicious. Not negligent. And certainly not criminally negligent.

While most of the rest of the media was outdoing itself with gushing about the impending royal birth, this radio station was simply, to use the colloquial expression, ''taking the piss''. That is part of the defining characteristics of successful radio DJs, and it certainly defines huge swathes of the Australian population when it comes to how to deal with English aristocracy. It has been ever thus.

I repeat: it is a shocking tragedy this young woman has taken her life. But is the real culprit a couple of DJs making a prank call?

Or does the fault lie somewhere in an English culture of such overblown hyperbole when it comes to anything to do with the royals that a young nurse could really think her life was no longer worth living because she had put a call through to a royal ward? You must know the answer.

I rest my case, while still offering my deepest sympathies to the family of the young woman.

Fitzy is right the calls for compensation and punishment for these dj's is ridiculous.

I heard reports this morning that english tabloids have dispatched some of their most ruthless journos to Sydney with the express directive track down and make an example of these dj's. Note the language here….it is an outrageous over reaction.

I also find it somewhat ironic that one of the people in the Australian media who is responsible for the over-sensationalisation of the royals - Kate in particular is Fitzy's wife Lisa Wilkinson. She must have mentioned that Kate was pregnant over 100 times last week... thus helping to declare it a more important world event than what is happening in Egypt at the moment. It doesnt surprise me in the slightest that 'pranksters' have targeted this story - it is all we keep hearing about. I am looking forward to seeing what she thinks of the matter tomorrow. Her husband understands the situation, I am not so sure that she will.

I haven't followed this story all that much as I don't read anything to do with the royals as I find the institution of monarchy archaic and socially regressive.

This voyeuristic element is endemic and infected just about every facet of society. That said, reality television, gossip tabloids… They're all only here because there is demand. It seems there are so many out there whom feel their lives hold so little value so that they have to live their lives following the lives of others. All part of the zeitgeist sadly...

As Eleanor Roosevelt said:

Great minds discuss ideas;
Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.

Finally some sense!

And yes AHX, it's no different now from the Bible days, in fact, it's probably worse.

Stryker so well put… Your post is a spot on reflection of the trashy media society puts up with on a daily basis...when big brother out rates an educational documentary on the ABC when ACA out rates world news on SBS we are in trouble.

An overreaction to an overreaction to an overreaction…
A very sad reflection on the state of media worldwide. Confected outrage continues to sell.

You dont even have to go looking for this tabloid soapie crap…..its rammed down our throats, blasted into our ears and eyes.

Im listening to 2UE sports today as i type and vossy has broken from talkin to Dwight Yorke to provide us a recording of the DJs i'view tonite on 9 & 7

Guess what 2ue?

I DONT GIVE A STUFF!!!!

Sorry guys, Ive been living under a rock the last few days, first Ive heard of it…......whats this all about? From the previous posts it was a prank to a nurse that then killed themselves????

can someone please post a link or PM a link that tells the story of what the prank was if it cant be posted here.

From a wildly ill informed opinion. Its pretty ruff if this lady/guy? killed themselves over a prank call and the prankers are copping stick for it. There must be something underlying their mental health in the first place. Smells pretty bad to me, but hey, that's the word we will live in today. Blame others first.

Was at a luncheon a few years ago speaking to a local radio DJ and brought it up with him about the prank calls and how could they know for sure that the bloke wasn't sitting in his car outside a council office at the time walked in to the council offices loses it and punched someone and we have a situation like the David Hookes affair

He just laughed and said they would be able to do something

The press belief they are a law unto themselves and can do what they want regardless of the circumstances

What did they learn after Princess Di's death ?? Nothing

What will they learn after this ?? Nothing

What would they have done if they were patched through to Kate ?? Pulled the plug due to their journalistic morales :roll :roll :roll :roll :roll :roll

I don't know if the two who were on the TV got paid , but if they did they should give every cent the nurses family

I don't watch any TV unless its sports related (only games though, don't even watch panel shows), don't listen to any radio (FM radio is toxic imo) except to listen to the footy or the cricket and any TV shows i do watch i buy on DVD. It goes along way in avoiding the stomach turning culture that inhabits society today

It goes a long way in avoiding hearing about rubbish such as Big Brother, the Kardashians, Gangnam styles and One Direction. I know about these things as a result of working with kids

Another example of how backwards society is is people comparing One Direction to the bloody Beatles :crazy

Its a sickening comparison and is an insult to the most influential band that ever lived. As a music junkie i feel like i was ripped off by having to live in this era. I'd give anything to have grown up in the late 60's-early 70's with bands like the Beatles, Stones, Doors, and the emergence of bands like Queen, The Who, Kiss…..sure it was the era of ABBA, but hey, least there were no bimbos who walked around using small dogs as fashion accessories and the charts weren't dominated by a bunch of singers using auto-tuning.

With the exception of technology, there is nothing in this day and age that has gotten any better, its actually gotten worse

or just explain what happened?

live in china, no radio/TV here and most new sites are blocked. all im accessing here on some sites is the aftermath about 2 radio jockeys "under pressure" for their prank…...whatever that was

Basically Reyre2000, a story broke over a week ago where the Duchess Kate Middleton was hospitalised which turned out to be some sort of morning sickness due to her being pregnant. It became the biggest world event of the week even though far more important stories were on offer and deserved more coverage.

As you can imagine, we were absolutely bombarded with this story morning, noon and night to the point that it was embarrassing. The result was that the hot 30 countdown on 2day fm in Sydney decided to prank call the hospital and take the piss out of the situation. Its hosts impersonated the Queen and Prince Charles - badly I might add - and actually fooled the nurse who answered. She didnt give too much info away but did answer their questions as she thought it was legit.

This set fire to the story with the majority of the British media and royal lovers all over the world comdemning the hoax call as disrespectful. It then turned into a security related matter and just kept growing from there. Amid the back and forths from those who hated it and those who thought it a bit humurous, the nurse who took the call and had a conversation with the dj's was outed and started copping flak. A day later she was found dead in her apartment in an apparent suicide. Now the world has turned on these 2 dj's and are accusing them of driving the poor nurse to this act.

Here's the link if you can bothered listening to it….it really wasnt a clever or particularly funny prank call but the ramifications are huge it seems.
http://youtu.be/0MjPPMLlZqo

The point is it was a nothing story that has grown into a monster, may have caused a death and could well destroy the careers and/or lives of the dj's who are guilty of nothing more than a pretty ordinary prank. The whole thing has been driven by a frantic media who are laying blame everywhere else but upon themselves. They caused this through their stupid blanket coverage of Kates pregnancy news, then escalated when the prank call was made, started pursuing the nurse, and are now hammering the dj's. The whole fiasco is ridiculous.
