Would promoting a QLD cup team hinder them getting a large supporter base? Surely they would be playing out of Suncorp?

Redcliffe Dolphins are an existing side , but it is probably 60 kms from Suncorp

They have upgraded their home ground and a few A League games have been played there

Ipswich makes the most sense , about 200 k population , no issues with Brisbane

My thing with an extra Brisbane club is this ...you are either a broncos fan or support a club pre broncos .....what Brisbane fans of rugby league would switch allegiances ....

Ipswich you'd support your own town , your own club and with the history of Ipswich superstar rugby league players who would attract talent and fans to the club

Also there is a hatred between Ipswich and Brisbane ....lies underneath the surface ....but promoted well and it would become like Souths / Roosters , Wests / Manly

Called the jets?

If they decided to make Ipswich a Stadium , where the current ground is perfectly positioned , 400 metres to the train station and a huge area they could build a massive stadium

Would that attract fans in Brisbane or just Ipswich people? Its sounds a bit Campbelltown ish, in that you'd be concentrating on just one area.

But many Ipswich fans would be Broncos fans

As I said you won't attract enough fans / members to a 2nd Brisbane franchise and none of the current BRL sides would attract enough fans / members

Ipswich kills two birds with one stone

I don't quite follow. Will the Ipswich Broncos fans change allegiances?

Yes .....when you bring in the Walters , Langer and many of the other Ipswich heroes the fans will follow

Redcliffe and Easts will draw nada ......if the Bombers did a membership drive they'd draw sfa .....was different with the Crushers because there was a real anti Brisbane sentiment then ...... any ex Crusher fans would be Titans or Cowboy fans now ........And if you didn't switch your allegiance to the Broncos or Crushers from you current NSWRL club you aren't going to be swayed now

Is that true though? If you go for a NSW club , and you hate the broncos but live in Brisbane (it’s a pretty cool city), would you not sign up for the “bombers, dolphins, jets” just to get behind a local team . You’re not really betraying your current club, but especially if you have kids , you’re supporting a club that doesn’t have the crap behind it the broncos have . Also your kids get to go to 12 games a year to support a local team.

I live on the south coast , and have taken my son to 10 odd Dragons games , because that’s his local club. It’s much easier for him to get behind. And if that’s what his friends are into as they get older , he can share in that with them more than being a tigers supporter.

Don't live in Brissy anymore ...but I'd only go to a game if Wests or Wests Tigers were playing

The only time I went when they weren't playing was when guys I knew from my junior days were making a debut for the Broncs

Likewise. During my ten odd years in Brisbane I'd only venture in to Suncorp if the Broncos were playing the Tigers. (Otherwise I'd head down to watch Wynnum Manly play).

I've also lived in Perth. The difference between a team in Perth and a team in Ipswich is that Ipswich is a rugby league town and Perth simply isn't. And nothing that the NRL does is ever going to make Perth a rugby league town. A Perth team is purely a play for broadcasters.

A Perth team will always struggle to get a decent membership base. It's costs (particularly travel costs) would be horrendous and when the NRL stopped subsidising it, it would die a slow death.

If a team every comes to Perth I'll go to most, if not all, of their games. I really miss going to the footy.

Sorry @gallagher. I share your pain.

When I first moved to Melbourne there was absolutley no coverage of rugby league. Nothing in the newspapers, nothing on tv and no foxtel. Life was grim (my sons had to play rugby union)

But I still don't think a Perth team is the answer for the NRL.

i think they could get the south african base and rugby following over to league these days. When they tried last time wa and vic etc wqs very much all AFL Nd no other choice e.g. tv
Now we have pay tv it could work

I think they'd get a strong enough fan base. Corporate games are always attended well despite the quality of the teams that come here on occasion. Corporate support would be the biggest issue and the NRL would need to support them on getting a foot hold.

I meant “you” as in hypothetically a person who loves rugby league that lives in Brisbane . Not literally you. Apologise for the confusion.

My point still remains though. I think people would get behind it , especially if you have children and support an interstate team. You get to the footy , and support a club that’s for locals that isn’t this giant conglomerate that’s deliberately dominated the area since thier inception. Seems win win to me .

I used to live in Townsville at the time when the Cowboys entered the comp (1995). Starting a new team in Ipswich would be a lot like that I'd say. My recollections from that time:
Prior to 1988, the people I knew/NQ area people, that supported RL, picked a NSWRL side when they decided to follow the game - for me it was Balmain. In 1988, when the Broncos entered, about half switched allegiance to the Broncos as a Queeensland team to get behind. The other half stayed with their original team. In 1995, Cowboys start-up, I reckon about half the Broncos converts changed to the Cowboys and about 1/4 of NSWRL team fans did too. An influx of new Cowboys supporters also emerged. I bought season tickets for 1995 and 1996, but didn't renew during 1997 due to Super League, which meant that the Tigers didn't play up there. By default the Cowboys became my second favourite team, but there was daylight between first and second.
The Ipswich "Ronalds" would get a similar response, converting old NSWRL & Broncos fans plus creating a new wave. Like I did, supporters of other teams that live in Ipswich would also get season tickets.

I totally agree, good points.

We don't have to look any further than our own club for this evidence as well. Former Balmain and Magpies supporters as of 2000, but there isn't a kid alive today who remembers Magpies or Balmain and despite any family allegiance, cannot truly personally experience what it was like to be a Balmain or Magpies die-hard. Any newborn or newly-adopted supporter only knows Wests Tigers personally.

Same with a new local, there will be immediate converts and immediate rejects. There will be lapsed supporters who might get back into it because it's a local club and they'll have a local experience. In 10-20 years there will be a totally new generation of young kids for whom the local side has always been in the NRL and they don't know anything different.

But at least if it's a League heartland, the fundamental support is there. It also means locals who don't go for the local side can still watch when their team comes to town.

If expansion is the goal, I don't see the point in another Brisbane team. That's not expansion, that's repetition.

Perth, or NZ South island, or PNG (population 9 million), is expansion.

You know when they say "expansion" what they really mean is monetary expansion. They wouldn't go to Perth any time ever if they didn't expect to get (a) decent crowds/members and (b) a monetary expansion of their TV deal.

The development of the code in other regions is a decades-long consideration. Consider Melbourne, who are over 20 years old now, still barely penetrated the Melbourne juniors market. They have a small but loyal membership and TV base, but rugby league juniors is still weak.

The purpose of a second QLD team is purely to expand the viewership and dominate in the QLD market. There is currently very little opposition from AFL (Lions) or soccer (Roar). NRL moves to a 4th QLD side and they guarantee weekly matchups for the key viewing slots. They also get up to 3 additional "local derbies". The NSW market is basically saturated with top-tier football sides, but QLD is still a work in progress with a very strong heritage and junior pathway.

So if you "expand" then a new QLD team makes a lot of sense. Probably even more sense than Central Coast Bears, though as an old nostalgic I would love to see the Bears reborn up at Gosford, even if the NRL does not consider the region strategic for television or separate enough from Sydney.

Agreed, building genuine rivalry within Brisbane will increase crowds and tv viewers. A real boom for the game.
