A Call to action - Rozelle Village

Smeghead: this development was never about the Leagues Club, other than to ride their supporters. You have your own opinion on whether the area needs this development, but let's not confuse the two issues of getting the Leagues Club back and the development it "may" reside in.

Well to clarify there is a contractual obligation in place which means that the Leagues club will exist with the new space. There is no confusing of the issue as the Leagues Club will not return to the site as a stand alone business. This will never happen due to lending restrictions, manageable debt thresholds etc.

Yes I do have my own views on sustainable growth for the city of Sydney and its immediate surrounds. I am not confusing any issue in that regard.

Interesting that people are happy for other smaller developments to exist which will by their very nature put a greater strain on resources and roads than a larger development with retail space and direct public transportation access.

As a overall plan building higher density residentail spaces along arterial roads with good transport links has massive advantages over the current urban sprawl we have.

But of course this will be reduced back to over simplified trifling arguments about the casting of shadows and thinking of the children etc whilst pruporting to stand up for small business in the area, businesses that are stifled by the current lack of community support. In terms orf retail the best part about Rozelle west of Victoria Rd is that you can park in side streets and walk across to the side of the road that is actually worth going to.

If more developments such as this had occured 15 years ago we would be much better off as a city, we would not be wasting billions of dollars chasing property developers with infrastructure trying to catch up but instead maintaing and improving existing infrastructure, lessening the taxing load on the power grid maintenance and saving everybody money

By the way as a rate payer who can I complain to about Leichhard Council wasting our money in fighting this development?

You could have turned up to some meetings and added your views, rather than complain after the fact.

To clarify, there is nothing in the proposal that states Balmain Leagues Club "must" reside there for the development to go ahead. It would be in the developers best interest, if it ever wants to be repaid the $9m. I would support the naming of the Balmain Leagues Club, as the club in the proposal, but doubt the developer would ever do this.

Contractual obligations exist outside of the proposal submitted for public viewing. This is the case with every major development.

Worthy considering that by the time the development is finished it may very well be Wests Tigers Leagues club which exists in the alloted space

I couldn't have said it any better myself. The problems Sydney facing is that we have spread to far rather than develop the inner Sydney areas. In years to come I think many people will relaize that developments like Rozelle Village are the way to go and will become the realilty in a lot of areas. I for one can one day see a major development on the White Bay site and other sites in the Balmain/Rozelle area.

I turned up to one metting at Balmain Town Hall and was informed only Leichhardt Coucnillers were allowed to talk (all in opposition to the project by the way). i haven't botheed with any since (having 2 small childern takes a lot of my time). Looks like the most recent meeting was very poorly attended.

I am still waiting to see what compensation Balmain Leagues Club end up getting from the NSW Government after ceasing to trade because of the failed metro project. Going on the compensation some tenders got that were in the running to build the metro the Leagues Club/Developer should expect to see some serious money come their way in the near future.

A question if I can ask please everybody. I have just read above that the developer has loaned Balmain Leagues Club 9 million dollars, if I understand this correctly.

Is this true? That our club the Tigers is just being used as a professional lobbying facility for Rozelle Village? Can anybody confirm?

If so, does our club still have this money? What is the clubs current financial position and state of affairs. Is the money safe or has it gone? Maybe the club should be having a members meeting and we should be finding out more details. What's going on? Surely its a bit of a conflict of interest for our club to of received this money?

These type of reports are published every year and obviously are required by law. I was wondering and was concerned about right now. This month. When was this loan given?

Presumeably last years report that everyone has, is now out of date by nearly 12 months. Annual reports come out every June. What's can our club tell us,the members?

Home is where the heart is definitely, but Rozelle Village is making it very chancy for the club to ever come back to Rozelle. Our family would welcome Tigers reopening in Rozelle but not at the cost of the monstrosity that Ian Wright is proposing.

You seriously expect monthly updates on the club's financial position? In any case from my perspective the leagues' club board have been fairly open in their information to members.

As a few people have said, even leaving aside the question of the club this sort of high density housing has to happen. It's not Hampton Street, it's Victoria Road. You can't expect the rest of the city to pick up the slack.

I don't know too much about this development, but I would assume the $9M you are referring to would be in the form of a Bank Guarantee… If this is the case, this is normal business practice?

If that were the case then it would have to support both Junior Leagues you'd think.

Is this a personal view or has it been proposed anywhere anytime?

I feel the the 'Rozelle Village' people are using the Balmain Tigers and our supporters to try and get the project over the line. Sure the $9m loan is a sweetner but at the end if the day, 99% of Wests Tigers supporters are being hoodwinked as they do not know the goings on behind the scenes. Most believe the project is owned by Balmain Tigers and Balmain still own the land. I feel the great Balmain Tigers club is being used and abused as a pawn and the Wests Tigers supporters are having the wool pulled over their eyes.

I support this development and hope that it gets through, but for the life of me I simply can not see how Balmain Leagues club will survive. In my opinion the debt they are in right now is beyond a point that it can be serviceable. I just can not see it happening. No one can tell me how they will fund the lease or the furbishment of the premises.

What I can see, is Ashfield and Campbelltown Leagues forming a joint venture to fund 'Wests Tigers' Leagues club on that site. I feel that there are a lot of reasons behind why Wests Ashfield no longer want to put $300,000.00 a year into the Magpies State Cup and I just wonder if this is the reason why.

And will Santa, the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny be drinking at the bar?
