The Wests Tigers are on the verge of signing former champion halfback Brett ‘Noddy’ Kimmorley to head up their pathways and junior development.

They hope it will ensure the next Campbelltown juniors of the calibre of James Tedesco, Jarryd Hayne and Israel Folau are captured and kept in their system.

The former NSW Blues and Kangaroos playmaker already has a tremendous knowledge of the game’s best young players through his coaching of emerging Blues for the NSWRL.

“We’ve refocused our strategy over the last couple of years,” Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said. “That means investing in pathways with the acquisition of someone like Noddy.

“He’s got a great reputation in the game and he’ll be outstanding.

“Imagine him working with young halves when we set up our academy.

“To have him talking to kids and their parents will be invaluable.”

The Wests Tigers have also signed one of Australian cricket’s top development strategists to work alongside Kimmorley.

Matt Betsey headed up cricket’s top coaching academy and has overseen the growth and progress of many youngsters now playing Sheffield Shield and Test cricket.

“These appointments are as much about retention as development,” Pascoe said. “We’re going along well. Our reserve grade side is sitting second, our 21’s are running first, our sponsorship and memberships are at record levels.

“Financially our balance sheet was minus $7 million — now it’s positive. This is why we can now go and invest in people like Noddy and Matt in such crucial roles.”

Friday night’s win over St George Illawarra has kept alive the Tigers’ hopes of playing finals football for the first time in 10 years.

Ow look at Pascoe taking his training wheels off.

Buzz pumping up our tyres, is he ok?

He's not really though, is he? It's a brief, 'just the facts' reports that - unlike most of his garbage - doesn't tell the audience what to think. If it was about the Sharks I guarantee it be be full of "the Sharks have all but secured their future as a rugby league powerhouse" - all we get is a straight report.

Sounds to me like Pascoe bought him a bottle of scotch if he mentions WT financials

No matter what people think of Pascoe a $7mil turn around into the black is an impressive achievement as supporters we probably expected to much to soon after the JT & Cleary debacles but onward and upward should be our new chant.

Interesting the comment that the appointment is as much about retention as development. We've put all our energies into young talent, now we have to retain it. The Panthers just re-signed their good young centre Tom Jenkins, who is not a Panther junior but a charrypicker. They're out there, we just have to find them and keep them.

You can’t achieve anything if your bottom line is a basket case and your chance of success will improve out of sight if you get your books in order. We have recruited a strong team to oversee our football operation

We appear to have ample talent coming through but as the saying goes you can't keep em all though you need to identify and sign up the one's with potential.

The NRL give every club the equivalent of the salary cap plus a further percentage of that figure to cover the running costs of the club. Even then most clubs are in the red. I would think we spend a lot less than others on football dept costs which helps balance the books. We have done well to sign a lot of sponsors and keep the membership numbers and merchandise sales rolling along. Without that we would be a long way from being in the black.

Every club gets it - its money from the broadcast rights and covers salary cap and some running costs.

Always thought Noddy had footy smarts and would make a good coach..

Could drop into First Grade from time to time and work with the halves..

Coached the likes of Jacob Liddle an a host of players from his 2015 team - Tatola, Taire Martin, Masters, Marshall-King, Sironen, Felise, Seve, Heleta all played 1st Grade to varying degrees ..pretty good strike rate

I'm super curious how you keep a guy like Israel Folau in the Wests junior catchment when he moves to Brisbane at 15 years old, because his dad got a job there. Typical stupid Buzz article.

He didn’t say that. And cmon its buzz he never has anything good to day about us.

It’s impossible to keep them all, people move for various reasons and some of those include moving to give the kids a pathway chance to play nrl. This isn’t just for u18s kids get tapped in the U12s upwards especially out west by Panthers and Parra to play in there junior comps etc.

Wouldn’t you prefer to have a crack at keeping the next Folau or just keep letting them go which we have a bad record of.

Think the NRL give us nearly that every year. He is not a saviour in my books until we can play footy.

100% of clubs spend the NRL grant on salary cap, and after that many lose money on overall spending, sometimes topped up by Leagues Clubs or sponsors.

The point about Pascoe and Tigers is he reversed the debt over many seasons, which you can't use the NRL grant to do, unless you wanttl to stop paying your players.

It's exactly what he says 2nd paragraph, players of "the calibre of xxx" . He could have said players of the calibre of Munster or Inglis, if he was talking in the generalities of ability.

When people want to argue about better engagement of Macarthur juniors they alwayd seem to point to Tedesco (who was captured by Wests, that's a success indicator), Hayne (Minto to junior Eel) and Folau, who moved.

I'm still yet to see the comprehensive list of top-shelf juniors produced consistently in the Macarthur, alone or in comparison to any other district.

My personal view is - by all means consolidate your pathways from Macarthur and Balmain, but there are a tonne of juniors all over, and for me its more about talent ID from any region.

The best players on our books right now aren't even from Macarthur.

I feel we are now one of the better club at identifying talent. We just need to develop and keep them.

Melbourne Storm have made a dynasty of recruiting junior talent from QLD, you just have to look in the right places and have a nose for junior talent.

Looking at our squad compared to Melbourne, Easts or Penrith, I’d argue he’s effectively doing that. Probably not really in practice but as I said, until he gets the organisation playing football consistently I couldn’t give two hoots about the bank balance. We’re a footy team not a savings account.
