I went to the Wests Magpies reunion night a few weeks ago. There were a lot of old first grade players there. The thing that was common to them was their love of their old club. Players attending included Noel Kelly, Tommy, John Dorahy, John Elford etc etc. Some of them left Wests to play for other clubs but their heart was always at Wests.
Dorahy told me that when he went to Manly he was on $12k at Wests. Manly offered him $30k and he went back to Wests and said he'd stay for $16k. Poor old Wests just couldn't afford it at the time.
Wayne Smith was at the reunion too. He was a good first grade centre with Wests for a number of years and finished up his career at Cronulla. He said he can't go to Cronulla reunions because his heart is so much at Wests that he would feel he was betraying Wests if he went.
My point in this ramble is to compare the attitude of these champion blokes with the likes of Woods. There is no comparison. Woods is an opportunist of the worst kind and in the interview today showed himself to be a liar as well. We will be well rid of him.

Thank you for sharing. I was gutted when Dorahy et al went to Manly. Didn't know the financial details. Now I understand why he left.

Interesting anecdote. Just goes to show that some blokes leave for their livelihood (back when playing the game supplemented your livelihood,) but their heart always stayed with the club.

Woods could have been that as well, but he'll go down as a bloke who manufactured excuses to make himself feel better for leaving. The fact that he has done so insinuates he has guilt about his move.

The thing that gets to me is the reason he gave for wanting to play finals footy. He has been the leader of the club and the leader of the forwards for some time now and has taken no repsonsibility to us failing to make the finals. Instead blames the club. Sorry, i think this is a massive cop out from our club captain and any respect i had left for him has now gone.

The way he has handled this whole situation is terrible. He could have gone down as one the greats of this club, instead has tarnished his image with this club forever

One minute he says leaves all the contract negotiations to his manager as he doesn't get involved. Next he's let down because the Club hasn't contacted him! He's a liar and has taken the fans for mugs. Good riddance.

Yes good points cb and enuff.
He hasn't done this well nor been advised well.
All he had to say was that he loved the club but wanted a change.
In life, the best form of revenge is success.
Our best result is making the finals in 2018 and Canterbury not.

They are counting Andrew Webster in there too even though he was the interim coach

“The board and the CEO make the decisions. We just play football. That’s it.

“I didn’t get any support, I hadn’t heard from the club for three weeks from anyone at the club.

This was Saturday, 8 April 2017.

Within 3 weeks of making the contract decision and seems pretty supporting to me….

WOODS’ ‘EXIT INTERVIEW’ REVEALS GROSS CONTRADICTIONS

Yesterday Wests Tigers captain Aaron Woods move to Canterbury at the end of the year was finally confirmed. He also gave a brief interview with James Hooper, detailing his decision.
>
The interview isn’t very long, and considerably shorter if you remove all the times he ‘ummed’ and said “ya know”. He made a few statements that went a long way to showing that he’s something of a hypocrite and not much of a leader.
>
He made mention of the controversies at the club taking their toll.
>
“We’re forever in the media,” Woods told Hooper.
>
“You wanna go in there and pay footy, but there’s always something happening outside of the club that’s out of our control.”
>
The silly thing is, that giving this interview has only worsened that problem and not helped to minimise it. He also stated how he was disappointed with the leadership at the club – but the fact he took pot-shots at the club in this interview shows a complete lack of leadership on his behalf.
>
Rather surprisingly, he also said, “If you had’ve asked me at the start of the year, I would’ve said ‘mate, I’ll be a one club player at the Wests Tigers.’”
>
What makes this surprising is that prior to that he said, “We didn’t know who the long-term coach was going to be and they want us to sign a three- or four-year deal.”
>
The thing is though, Aaron, your new, long-term coach was appointed two weeks prior to your offer from the Tigers being removed. So you did know. He introduced himself to you and you stated at the time that you couldn’t believe how much he looked like his son.
>
The fact you did actually knew who the long-term coach was all but proves that this comment is bollocks.
>
This is also further proven given that you said you’d be willing to be a Tiger for life at the start of the year, despite knowing that then-coach Jason Taylor would likely have his contract end at the completion of this season anyway.
>
So you were keen to stay a Tiger under a coach whose contract was ending in a few months’ time, but couldn’t commit when you got what you wanted, a long-term coach. Come on Aaron, pull the other one mate.
>
You ended the interview by saying you just wanted to put all of this behind you. Well, giving that interview surely hasn’t gone any way towards ensuring that will happen. Genius.
>
So let’s tell it how it is.
>
You could have signed an extension to your contract last year. You could have signed an extension this year when you were allegedly willing to stay a Tiger for life. You could have also accepted the offer the Tigers had on the table for you, after you got confirmation of your new long-term coach.
>
This all points to you having decided, in your own mind, that you were leaving the club long ago.
>
All of this drivel in your interview was just a pathetic swipe at the club. You claim you’re tired of all the drama around the place, yet you just heaped more on it.
>
That’s not the actions of a leader, but rather the actions of an immature man.
>
That is why you get booed – and why you deserve to be booed – by your own (soon-to-be former) club’s fans.

Great article Unit.

What a great article. Not sure how widely read the author is but he's hit the nail on the head and exposed Woods' lies.

Woods only opens his mouth to change feet, the sooner Lawrence or ET is made captain the better as he can hardly put two words together. Also Woods doesn't let the facts get in the way of a good story, so no ticket for you and just get off the bus now as you never has any intention of re-signing, just stalling for time to get the best deal elsewhere!!

Quicker these 3 grubs move on the better

I love the passion of the loyal players this year but gees I want it to be over and done with

I'm sure Tolman got a kick out of hearing Woods would miss the test if this is true. Fifita should have asked him the other night what size his Australian jersey was so he could he ask for a new one if it was the wrong fit.

This is the thing I can't understand about Woods. The only thing that matters about footy is the opinion of the fans. The media can try all sorts of angles at a given moment, but the media always moves on, only fans look back and remember the legacy of players.

Nobody quotes interviews or newspaper articles years down the track. Nobody remembers the pithy contributions of James Pooper or Buzz Slothfield.

Clearly from this thread, and from what I'm hearing at the games, Woods has alienated 95% of this clubs' fans. At the start of the year at least half the fans would have stepped up to support him, even though he had his detractors about being an over-rated footballer, they would have supported his commitment to the club.

Woods has undone all of this, absolutely drained any supporter good-will in the space of 6 weeks. Tigers fans don't want him to stay around, Bulldogs fans don't want him to come around.

Doesn't matter how right you may indeed be, how justified your actions are, if the fans dislike you, you've gone about things incorrectly. Popular opinion matters in sport just as much as it does politics.

If Tigers fans disown you, then maybe they are just upset you are leaving, or the manner of it. If Bulldogs fans want to disown you, your legacy to date probably needs some serious consideration. If the wider NRL supporter fanbase calls you out, you've lost the game, you are clearly out of touch. You can try all the PR you want, but Woods will be booed at every remaining game this year, unless people get bored of it.

So doesn't matter Woods' justifications for his decision, he's lost us, he's lost everyone. Even Farah, as bad as his exit was, at least most people still liked and respected him, even if he didn't handle it great. Woods has thrown a grenade into this one, it's an absolute mess and the only loser is him.

I honestly think Woods doesn't realise he's telling lies ….he's just that Dumb !

Definatley a few sandwiches short of a picnic .

This sums up the fearless leader of both our pack and team. Pinned on our line with Cronulla bashing us, he let 3 backs take runs before he took the 4th. Now i know outside backs are effectively used at times with their speed to get out of trouble, but these 3 took hit up off the dummy half like forwards, they weren't scoots from dummy half. We needed a big carry from a big body and he was nowhere to be seen.

I think it sums him up.

Out for 2 to 3 weeks now with his leg tickle.

I remember when Prince went back to the Gold Coast, yes the public meeting he had with the Gold Coast officials wasnt a good look for him but he was open and honest from day 1 of his contract negotiation what his intentions were and there was next to no chance him staying even though we resurrected his career. He can still walk into Liechhardt and Campbelltown and be treated like a hero. Unfortunately for Woods, he's destroyed that privilege forever.
