Isn’t the answer that both our halves need to start playing direct with running options inside and out and just digging out a channel in the defence down the line?

That's part of the answer, but also it's become quite the trend NOT to have your halves continually dig into the line because they are getting ironed out all match.

Cameron Murray started the trend and then Yeo solidified the style for Penrith, of the link-up lock who can take the run and draw defenders, but also cop a hit if he has to.

You look at the Roosters, one problem they continue to have is all their eggs are in Sam Walker's halves basket, but he cannot handle 80 mins of defensive traffic every week, nor can he dig into the line without getting regularly hammered.

May and Skelton score yesterday because the Tigers had successfully drawn the Titans defence into the middle (straight play) then a good shift wide. No cut-outs required, no mad tackle busts, just get your edges outside their edges and carry them over.
 
Richo needs to get fair dinkum and keep AD. Punt Royce Hunt and Jack Bird and make a point to prioritise a Tigers Junior for once.

Both Hunt and Bird have been second rate and they both are on close to million combined a year. We have juniors coming through that can be better than both of them week to week now.

Our third try was right in front of me and it was very noticeable Luai's reaction when Skelton put the ball down. He turned straight back to Latu and was clearly crediting him with the try. All Latu did was play straight and deep into the line. Honestly, having players that can do this is the absolute key to stripping the edges.

The tools are there with Latu replacing Galvin and Doueihi moving to lock. I thought yesterday was Luai's best game and he will get better if Benji sticks to this combination and builds it.

I just mean for us, not anyone else, I’d love to see us mid field get a bit of momentum by using our halves on a straight run with options, quick play the ball reset and go again. You’d get up field pretty quickly that way. It’s old school but it’s effective.
The point came about as the question was Latu wasn’t as effective since the Roosters game. In the Roosters game Latu was doing exactly that receiving at speed and taking the ball square with options, Doueihi likewise.
I like having a lock provide a bit of space but I’d like to see our focus be to move forwards with supports before shifting. That would tighten up the defence even more so opening up the outside play when it’s on. Storm do it best.

I’ve been critical of him over the years but thought he had a dig on the weekend. Playing lock is one of the most demanding roles on the park as you have to be engaged in some capacity nearly every set with/without the ball mixed with the constant physical nature of the role.

Can’t dispute any of your post mate, and Doueihi has only come good at a time of contract negotiations, which is not a good look. However, based on what he can do I think he’s worth $100k more than Twaly.
He’s a local junior too which is even more disappointing.
 
I wish AD had made the same effort for the past 3 years that he has made in the past 3 weeks!
Hes been offered $400k by WTs on a one year deal,after which he almost certainly will go to Perth on an extended term which given his fragile knees he shld be striving for after 3 acls and an uncertain long term
Its a very fair offer all things considered ,and if he gets a few sheckles more at Dragons next year good on him

He is worth keeping as a depth utility as he covers a few positions. However, none of them are at NRL starter level. I would be happy to pay him extra for his versatility. If he can prove his worth as a 13, even better. Given last weekend was his first hit out as a starting 13 he did OK. Was gassed too early and shirked some of the hard yards. I would be looking at from a true ball playing lock. Early days though and if picks it up he may fill the role. At this stage I would be more comfortable with a proven ball playing 13 going into 26.

I think in fairness he’s been injury prone e for past few years otherwise he would have been towards the top of our recruitment tree. It shows the type of guy he is who can fight back from such adversity. He’s a keeper imo.

I sat behind the posts, you could see both Latu and Luai playing a little bit too laterally but Doueihi played straight. It was especially clear when Doueihi went off, we got a little leggy sideways again, then he came back on and we went more direct.

We scored all 3 tries on our left, barge-overs, after dragging the Titans to the middle then sweeping wide. And I'm pretty sure Doueihi was on the field for all of them - in fact yes he was for sure, he took the conversions.

So you think the 5-6m hit ups he took made a difference?
 
I think we should keep him for the right price. He has a unique skillset that looks like it might suit our team. Yes - he has his faults and previously has had a wretched run with injury but if he can lock down 13 and open up our attack while adding value through his goal kicking and general kicking and make his meters in the middle - he could be good value around 450k in my opinion.
 
Surely we do another deal with AD and I would hope he's interested in hanging around, as a junior and because the club stood by him for so many injuries. Club low-balled him recently but that's fair when the player himself had low stocks, and also respect to the player for getting his fitness and confidence back and making the contributions as requested by the coach.

I can respect, for example, that I think AD still considers himself a half or fullback but he's given 100% being picked in the centres almost every week, and Benji said when he shifted him to lock for the benefit of the team and fitting in Tiny, he didn't complain. Fair play all around, worth an improved but modest deal (2 years) for both parties to come out as winners.
