Advantage Rule??

Hey guys, just joined today so first post, happy to join the family. I'm quite a big fan of Rugby Union and ever since out Aussie teams have been doing well in super 15 I've been watching it alot more.

what I relized for the first time today is that the advantage rule they have is very handy.
If a team knocks on or give a penalty away, and the opposition picks it up or has the ball, they get the advantage rule, if they dnt get anywhere they get pulled back for the penalty or knock on.

Do you think it would be a good idea for League? cause I believe it would be very very beneficial.
What's ur thoughts on that guys?

welcome.
the only thing league should take from union are its players…
the advantage rule is ok as is in league and doesn't really require any alterations... we are tinkering with the game enough as it is already...

Yeh I see what ur at mtd, and agree, they have some talent and would do well, but just thought that with the refs being inconsistent in callings such as, not playing on when it should be and not pulling it back when it should be, just thought it could help with that, cause I saw that a try was disallowed to raiders cause he called it back of a storm knock on when it he picked it up and ran, there was no need to call it back, if the advantage rule was there than it would be a try they deserved, see what I'm at

Welcome to the forums mate! :sign:

The advantage rule does already exist to some degree in league, however not to the extent it does in rugby - it only lasts for one tackle, and is at the referees discretion, where as in rugby as you know it can last several phases.

Zero tackle was introduced into rugby league to keep the game moving - I.e if a player drops a ball and the other team pick it up, instead of a scrum, its the "zero tackle" or a tackle before the first tackle…

I like the balance that league has now perosnally, but hey, ideas are what make the game so great (e.g - the 40/20 rule - MAGIC)

yeah i understand your view i just dont agree with it.
there are bigger issues such as the consistency around the speed of the play the ball and ridiculous scrums we should address before introducing anything new..

Yeh underdog, I see now, they do in some way have, then if not they should bloody well learn to keep consistent, cause it would be very helpful then

Don't know if you know this TigerBoy, but last year they tried to make the advantage a fixed 10 metres and when they announced it it sounded like a great idea.

However in practice it didn't work, it felt awkward and stilted, and never seemed to work into the game properly.

Refs discretion may not _seem_ consistent in theory, but strangely in practice it works well, and the games…. well, _"flow"_ well...

Na I didn't know, I'm a huge fan and watch every game of the week but didn't relise, we need union refs, alot more consistent

I noticed a couple of dodgy adv rule decisions in NRL last weekend

Unfortunately with the TV product we have now and multiple cameras and replays, decisions are rarely black or white, lot more grey areas up to refs interpretations - its frustrating, particulalrly when you have two refs and you hear one rule one way and the other controlling ref decides another

I think the difference between what it once was and what it is . If a referee calls held and they lose the ball there is no advantage and it is played as a knock on .
Point in case was the turnover v Cowboys when ellis belted someone once they had hit the ground and the Cowbees player lost the ball
Marshall passes to Lawrence and Lawrence was away (1st Half ) As the ball came lose after tackle was completed it is now a scrum

Uve got a good point happy tiger, I get it fully now, so since the union dnt have tackles really and rucks instead it's always an advantage but in league if the tackle is complete it's scrum, thanx heaps

Now TB33 all we have to do is convert you from the dark side . Don't worry Happy spent 3 years playing Ra Ra while at school back in the days when games where once 6-3 ,9-6 . Thankfully as a fullback at least there was a bit of action . Catch the ball and kick the crap out of it and wait for a lineout .

What ya mean dark side?? I'm a Tiger in and out, I have tigosterone running through my blood, I'm a TigerBoy

I love both games, and reckon that the way Rugby handles the advantage rule is superior, I think if a team is on the front foot, and they receive a penalty they should get an opportunity to play out what they are doing if nothing eventuates go back to the penalty….

There is lots of goodthings from other sports we shoulds look at
