The perpetrators need to be dealt with very severely in this sad sad situation. Let's hope some good comes out of it with a review of this style of tackling to reduce the chances of it happening again. One tragedy is one too many.
 
We would have a faster game and fewer injuries if the refs called held as soon as forward momentum had ceased - tackles can be effectively completed without putting players on the ground with the only objective being to slow down the play. Smith was ranting about how the tackle was within the rules, and unfortunately he was right, so change the rules.
 
What if the players are being trained to tackle like this. As mentioned previously, it wasn't the first tackle very similar to this.

Some liability falls on the shoulders of the defensive coach / coach if they are training their players to tackle in this style.
Remember a young guy is more than likely going to struggle with his day to day life from this tackle. I hope this was not a deliberate Melbourne technique, but we all know they are usually the first to bring in dodgy tactics to slow the play the ball.
 
there are already rules in place that say tacklers cant make the legs go past the horizontal or put your hands between the legs making a tackle.
i know this is terrible, but it is a very rare occurrence in the modern game. a very harsh penalty should be dealt out and i think that will be sufficient.
im sure mclean and the bromwich boys feel shattered that this happened. no one would want this to happen.

as for calling held early well that takes away any hope of an offload.

it was just an unfortunate accident, and one im sure a lot of players will learn from.

Agree a very harsh penalty needs to be dealt to all the players involved in that tackle.
We know about past the Horizontal but is that correct there is an actual rule you can't put your hands between the legs ?
 
im pretty certain you cant put your hands between the legs irvine. havent looked it up, but think this is the case in a lifting tackle, maybe unwritten. i could be wrong.
 
It's an unwritten one. Hands go through legs all the time. It's just when tackles like this happen it's generally the player with arm between the legs that's done the lifting. Is it a matter of no more lifting. You can't lift a player into touch. Into the in goal. How spear tackles happen into touch or in goal? So why not just stop lifting in general play? Soon as a players legs come off the ground they're held.

The referees apply this already if the player is 'actually' lifted by 2 or more tacklers…
Unfortunately, the lifted-player still needs to be returned to the ground and that is where this tackle went ugly as the Melb Boys are notorious wrestlers.

Lifting is a natural occurrence in most tacklers technics... I was doing drills just 3 weeks ago with the U12 and demonstrating how it's is executed.

Sickening footage.

I had a conversation with Alex McKinnon once.
Told he looked bigger in person than he did on TV.
Had a laugh about it and we chatted for a bit.

Don't rate The Knights at all, but he seemed like a really good bloke.
Defo a tragedy, hopefully he will play again someday.

Poor lad. That's awful :frowning:

I hope the Knights and the NRL pull together to ensure he's looked after in the likely event that he doesn't recover.

It might not be a popular opinion, but I hope the NRL & Storm have a welfare officer on hand for McLean as well. Who knows what is going through his head at the moment.
