Alex McKinnon

Absolute tragic , I'm speechless . Give your loved ones a cuddle and tell them you love them , you just don't know if maybe tomorrow the easy things in life (like cuddles) will be impossible to do .

Absolutely tragic for the family. Despite it being a hazard of the game you'd never expect something as horrific as this.

As someone said above, McLean needs to be looked after too. You never just quite know what kind of impact this could have on him knowing he was the guy who put McKinnon in a wheelchair. Last thing we want is another Mosese Fotuaika.

100% still needs 8-10 weeks though. so he can feel much better being punished other than feeling that he got away from it kinda thing. May also ruin his life altogether as well. It's a hard one hey stoner .

Just an aweful situation allround.
Felt a pang in my guts when I heard that report. You are always aware that the danger exists but geeze it hits hard when it happens nonetheless.
Wishing whatever luck is available that he can someday live his life properly.
Shattered for the man.

Wow such awful awful news to hear…...I read the reports that said he was going to be a quadraplegic and I just felt something in my stomach...I was speechless for about 10 mins seriously I didn't have the will to talk. I really really hope he beats the prognosis 😛ray: 😛ray: 😛ray: 😛ray: 😛ray: 😛ray: 😛ray: 😛ray:

extremely awful news, apparently he still has some movement in his elbows which is interesting, there might be hope for him.

The Newcastle Knights have released a statement saying there have been no new developments regarding the condition of Alex McKinnon on Monday.

The club said McKinnon had suffered a "devastating spinal injury" but that his condition has continued to improve, although the process of regeneration and recovery could last two years.

The statement also said, "The Club is extremely disappointed in the sensationalised television news story on Monday night about this tragic situation".

i thought that ch 9 sensationalised it by saying he is a quadraplegic when he was actually diagnosed with quadraplegia which is completely different as it allows for a lot of scope for a good or full recovery.

I dont know what to make of this. Surely even the lowest of low journo would make this stuff up

I'm the same. I thought Neill Breen was one of the more respectable journalists.

It's past due to significantly overhaul both the actions of the tackler/s and their number. It may well be as simple as a 'no lifting' edict and limiting tacklers to a total of two. There's nothing appealing about three defenders manhandling one man in possession. It does not represent a contest, it's the RL version of assault

This is for another thread…not this one

I hope we never see another incident like that again.

The coaches are a source of a lot of these problems, as is the rules interpretations and refereeing. Both of those are what is primarily responsible for this.

Many people observed that the new Storm tactic with the ruck changes was to get numbers in the tackle, hold the ball carrier up and spin them around 180\. What if what happened was a poorly executed defensive technique being taught by the Storm?

And there is also the rumoured advice to players to dive head first to win a penalty, with I believe Fifita coming out and saying something along those lines. I don't think McKinnon was doing that, he was doing a reflex action whilst been disorientated in the tackle. But all the same if the coaches are teaching that, then it has to stop in case it does lead to injury..

Then we have spineless refereeing who nitpick for minor and entirely subjective incidents in the ruck to blow their whistle on, whilst seemingly ignoring countless acts of dangerous and foul play. And of course a refereeing establishment who submitted to lobbyist coaches to allow wrestling to enter the game..

A large part of that $50 million saved up will and should go to McKinnon and his family. If he is a complete quadriplegic then that figure should easily reach $20m.

Also investigate Bellamy, and get all coaches to come together on all levels within the NRL to air their potentially dangerous coaching practices so that they can be eliminated..

I also think those involved in the tackle shouldn't play NRL again, but should get as much help and aid as possible to establish lives and careers outside football. No one wants to see a double tragedy.

Melbourne popularised the so called 'crusher' tackle, where the chin ends up being compressed into the chest. The NRL took an age to combat this practice, despite the spinal injury stats indicating that such compression accounted for the majority of serious spinal injuries in sport. You only need to see the sickening footage from the 1991 RWC where a player from the Ivory Coast was tragically injured.

7 weeks for maclean

this is pretty much the suspension i thought he should get. if nothing had happened in the tackle it would be very over the top but the fact is, although an accident, it had drastic consequences.

i dont think it is in itself a 7 week offence, but i do think a lengthy ban is the best thing for mclean as he will at least feel he has been suitably punished, rather than getting off lightly which would have had people in an uproar and been even more difficult a situation for him to deal with.

He was always going to get a suspension. The NRL has to make the game look safe despite the fact it was an accident of the unlikeliest possibilities.

I just hope the fabric of the game won't be changed. Accidents happen and unfortunately it was Alex who felt this one. Here's hoping the young man gets the strongest recovery possible.

Pretty much where I saw it landing, substantial without being too over the top. Let's face it, no matter what he got, someone was going to be pissed off by it.

Hopefully the sentence is a deterrent for players to stop putting their hands between the legs and nothing more. Its a joke if they're taking the injury into account, and suspend the next guy for a similar tackle who doesn't injure anyone for 1-2 weeks.
