I don't know how bringing Matterson into the discussion while choosing to ignore the fact we are undergoing yet another retention blunder helps. I couldn't care less about player reputations once they leave our club but rather more how we can change ours re: our retention/recruitment.

I'm also pretty certain Twal is actually his best mate, so does that mean we'll lose him? Who cares if players wish to follow suit of other former players. The concern should be more focused on our most problematic issues. Prospects won't care about the reasons either however will more likely question our treatment of players.

No retention blunder from listening to Lee H on radio we made offers back and forth and then Josh A has said i am leaving as he has a bigger offer from club x
This is just like Matterson and listening to Lee H we will not be releasing players anymore
Josh you are out of luck

Look I get all that but it's ***not how it's gonna play out in the media***. We all have a loyalty to the club and personal bias but this doesn't help the perception of the club's retention and recruitment one bit. Which is my whole point.

Im not so sure about that. The Chammas article is very supportive of the Tigers position and stance. SEN interview was very supportive of the Tigers.

It may take a strong principled stance on an issue like this for the club to earn some credibility in the media.

look at storm they held firm with JAC we should do the same
our reputation will not get any better if we roll over on this one it is already at an all time low
Losing Benji
Not getting JAC
McIntyre leaving
Josh A wanting a release

But we don't have the same reputation as the Storm. I do understand we should applying similar tactical methods and all, was just saying I care more about the perception of our players and any of the club's prospects.

If CCTW is correct doesn’t sound like there’s much the club could do unfortunately 🙁

Push for a lengthy investigation into Manly's involvement regarding this. Maintain the hard stance of no release unless we benefit from it.

Stick the boot in and make it entertaining:grin:

You do have a point. Aloiai is showing himself to be a scummy player, with no loyalty to the club being showed. But, if we were run more professionally as a club, there would be less opportunity for players to do this.

Look at Storm, JAC said he wanted out, Storm said wait a year then we'll talk. JAC waited a whole year, then agitated again. Storm thought about it, and in the end topped him a little for his final year and said no you can stay with us another year. JAC never publicly bad-mouthed Storm. Even though he wanted out/ wanted more money/whatever.

Like you said, I also worry what this will do to our reputation in attracting other players. It certainly won't help.

Surely got to be more to it that wanting more money. Rare for a player to come out and say “I’m never wearing the jersey again” whilst contracted. And a player that was somewhat of a leader and by all reports seemed happy. A player surely cannot be that upset by our negations that he would publicly say that 🤔

When you are paying Packer reportedly 650k a year is it any wonder that he would think he is worth around the same. Good luck to Josh A getting a good deal but if the club had a limit on what they think he is worth so be it. He still needs to be made to honour his contract.

So you would what, have the club pay well more than they were prepared to just for the sake of keeping him for the optics of how it would play out in the media? That would just replace a perceived poor recruitment and retention strategy with an actual poor recruitment and retention policy...

Calling the club's bluff.

His deal with Manly is contingent upon being released for next year.

Don't release him, he misses out.

Manly offering almost 700k is absurd, and way over what we're willing to pay. Can't fault the club for not offering him that much.
Did he actually say that he'll never wear the jersey again or is that just Chammas paraphrasing the impression he got? No direct quotes in there.
The whole notion of letting him play in CC next year for the Magpies is also absurd and impossible. His offer from manly only exists if he gets released now. They are not interested in signing him for 2022, only next season as a replacement for AFB.
Of course we don't have to release him like Storm didn't with JAC, and as a player who's previously been highly committed and professional I would expect him to honour the contract.
In the end, and as i've said numerous times before, i see Josh as a bench prop. A handy player but a player with flaws in his ball handling and defence and giving away penalties. These flaws haven't improved over the past 5 years.
If Manly want him for next season they'll have to offer us something, and i believe that is most likely to be Sean Keppie. He was close to signing with us before joining Manly. His access to first grade would be lessend by Aloiai's arrival, and he'd be something of a like for like swap. Cheaper than Josh, and a big boy with good wraps on him.
Schuster could be an option too if he's unsettled, but we'd still need to replace Aloiai. Paseka another option, but would he come back??.

I commend the club for taking a stance but was only touching on my view that this area clearly needs to addressed or reviewed more by the club.
